Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 69: Partial Displacement

  • Next Chapter

Jace hit the pavement with one Health and two versions of the street trying to occupy the same space. The blue Safe Zone shimmered eleven meters away. A second street flickered underneath it. Black towers. Red sky. Then Manhattan returned.

Gabriel kept describing the second street while Jace tried to align them. Details mattered. Black curb. Red transit line. A storefront where the current city had a pharmacy. The more specific Gabriel became, the easier it was for Jace to separate memory from location instead of treating the overlap as one more hallucination.

[SPATIAL STABILITY CHECK]

Current Location: Outside Safe Zone.

Distance from Barrier: 11 meters.

Health: 1/420.

Stamina: 4/160.

Charge: 0/140.

Corruption Load: 96%.

Static Step Cooldown: 00:30.

Spatial Layer Overlap: 18%.

Reality Anchor Strain: HIGH.

Gabriel Flint was on one knee farther south, one hand pressed against the pavement.

"Do not move."

Jace looked at him.

"Strong opening suggestion."

"I mean it."

The street beneath Gabriel's palm flickered. For an instant, his fingers rested on black stone instead of asphalt. Gabriel pulled his hand back.

"Your Step did not only miss the destination. It dragged part of the old route with us."

Behind the barrier, Mia Torres slammed into the west doorway with the injured civilian still hanging from her shoulder. The Purge Cannon fired. Gold light swallowed the entrance. Mia disappeared inside it.

"Mia!"

The shield bowed inward.

SAFE ZONE BARRIER

Integrity: 39% -> 33%.

Reserve: 371 -> 338 Charge.

West Entrance: STRUCTURAL FAILURE PENDING.

Civilian casualties: 0.

Mia rolled out of the light on the protected side, coughing hard.

"I'm good!"

Luke dragged the injured man away from the opening while Michael pulled a broken metal barricade into place. Mia did not follow them. She turned back toward Jace.

"What are you doing out there?"

"Testing sidewalk quality."

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit NovelPhoenix for the authentic version.

"Stop joking."

That landed harder than the blast. Mia pointed at the civilians he had moved.

"You almost split us in half."

The System reopened the failed movement record.

[STATIC STEP FAILURE ANALYSIS]

Requested Passengers: 4.

Safe Passenger Capacity: 1.

Destination Stability before activation: 39%.

Actual Destination Stability: 21%.

Contaminated Charge contribution: 18 Charge.

Corruption interference: SEVERE.

Passenger outcomes:

Mia Torres: SAFE.

Injured Civilian: SAFE.

Civilian 2: SAFE.

Gabriel Flint: DISPLACED.

Jace: DISPLACED.

Potential catastrophic outcomes avoided: 7.

Jace read the last line. Seven. Mia saw it too.

"You knew the capacity was one."

"There were six seconds."

"That does not make four become one."

"No."

"You could have killed us."

Jace had no joke for that. Gabriel stood carefully.

"She's right."

The old street flickered beneath his shoes. Jace looked at the battery crawling through the smoke near the Safe Zone.

AUTONOMOUS CLEANUP BATTERY

Emergency Power Remaining: 00:00:13.

Vane Cleanup Order: ACTIVE.

Target Priority: WITNESSES.

Its barrel rotated.

Jace opened Static Step again.

COOLDOWN: 00:23.

Mia shouted through the territory channel.

"Do not."

"I was checking."

"You were deciding."

Jace closed it. He had spent weeks learning that the System turned protection into ownership. Power could do the same thing without paperwork. If every crisis ended with him using the strongest ability available and trusting everyone else to survive the consequences, the wording changed while the structure stayed familiar. Seraphina appeared at the west entrance. Gold claimcraft spread across both hands. She saw Jace outside.

Then Gabriel. Then the approaching battery.

FREE ACCORD ASSIST AVAILABLE

Seraphina may voluntarily stabilize one connected participant.

Command authority: NONE.

Contribution required: 8 Charge.

Seraphina selected Gabriel. Jace blinked. Gabriel did too.

Seraphina's Noble Reserve: 34 -> 26.

Gabriel Spatial Stability: 42% -> 71%.

Jace Spatial Stability: 21%.

Mia looked toward Seraphina.

"You picked him."

"He is farther from the barrier and has no Anchor connection."

Jace managed a thin smile.

"Good answer."

Seraphina looked at him sharply.

"You expected me to stabilize you?"

"No."

"You did."

Maybe he had. The battery moved closer.

00:00:10.

Gabriel tested one step. The old street remained beneath him but no longer dragged his foot sideways.

"I can reach Jace."

"No," Mia said.

Gabriel looked through the shield. Mia pointed toward the battery.

"You reach him, then both of you are standing next to the thing trying to kill witnesses."

"He has one Health."

"I can read."

Mia scanned the broken western boundary. James's braces still held the physical frame, but the barrier had cracked between them.

"Bring him toward the south edge," she said. "The barrier is more stable there."

Gabriel hesitated.

"You are giving rescue instructions now?"

"I'm giving you the route I just ran."

Gabriel nodded. No title changed. No command panel appeared. He moved. The first step held. The second crossed a patch where modern asphalt vanished beneath black stone. Gabriel stopped.

SPATIAL OVERLAP

Modern Earth: 77%.

Prior Earth Layer: 23%.

Crossing risk: MODERATE.

Jace reached toward him with his left hand. Gabriel shook his head.

"If I pull you through that, the Anchor may drag the overlap with you."

"Then don't."

The battery reached the broken delivery van.

Emergency Power: 00:00:07.

Its cannon turned toward the Safe Zone. Michael pushed people away from the western corridor. Luke moved the last stretcher. Mia stayed at the entrance. Seraphina stepped in front of her.

"You should move."

"So should he."

"He cannot."

"Then neither can I."

Seraphina's expression changed. Not approval. Recognition. The cannon charged.

PURGE DISCHARGE: 00:00:03.

Seraphina raised both hands.

FREE ACCORD CONTRIBUTION

Purpose: Direct Safe Zone Defense.

Contribution selected voluntarily: 18 Charge.

Noble Reserve: 26 -> 8.

Accord Integrity: 50% -> 53%.

Claimcraft Efficiency: 73%.

A gold lattice formed outside the blue barrier. The cannon fired. Seraphina caught the blast against the lattice. Her knees bent. The blue shield held behind her.

Barrier Integrity: 33% -> 30%.

Seraphina Health: 188/240 -> 164/240.

Mia grabbed her shoulder.

"You cannot keep doing that."

"No."

The battery crawled closer anyway. Jace remained outside. Gabriel remained trapped between two streets. Static Step still had fourteen seconds on cooldown. Seraphina planted herself in the broken western entrance and raised the gold lattice again.

For the next attack, the Safe Zone would have to be defended directly.
