Chapter 68: Static Failure

Six seconds was enough time to make a bad decision look efficient. Jace opened Static Step.

Jace knew the passenger limit before he opened the skill. That was what made the choice bad rather than ignorant. Static Step had moved one willing passenger safely in testing. He was about to ask it for more because the cannon timer had made recklessness look like generosity. Mia saw the panel over his shoulder.

Mia's consent prompt stayed visible in Jace's memory after the street split. He had done one thing right inside a bad decision. That did not make the decision good. It only meant failure could contain useful information without becoming an excuse.

"Do not decide for everybody because you're scared," she said.

The words landed. Jace split the request, sending consent prompts to each person he meant to move. Three accepted. One froze too long to answer. He launched anyway with the people who had chosen, and the overloaded route still failed. Consent did not make the physics disappear. It only made the risk theirs to accept.

Nine civilians were inside the firing cone. Three were already moving through the west doorway. Two had fallen behind a broken concrete planter. Four were trapped beside the outer barricade. A girl in a yellow jacket ran back toward them instead of away.

"Mia!" Luke shouted.

She ignored him.

Seraphina caught the chair before he could stand.

"No."

"They have four seconds."

"Static Step is unstable with one passenger."

"Then this is educational."

"That is not funny."

"I know."

Mia looked toward Jace.

"Can you move him?"

She meant the injured man, not herself. Jace selected the man. Passenger consent required. The injured man nodded once. Gabriel shook his head.

"The boundary is folded. If you Step through it from here, the destination may split."

Mia pointed at the two civilians behind the planter.

"Take them too."

"Capacity says one."

"Capacity also says we get shot."

Jace expanded the route.

Mia answered immediately.

"Then try."

Gabriel did not. He looked at the crack beneath them, then at the cannon.

"I consent to movement. I do not consent for him."

He pointed to the second trapped civilian, a woman gripping the barricade.

The woman shouted, "I consent."

The final civilian behind the planter raised both hands.

"Me too."

Jace activated Static Step. The street vanished. He stood inside the earlier Times Square. Red grid above. Black towers. A child under a bench. Then the current block returned on top of it.

Gabriel vanished from Jace's reach.

Gabriel was on one knee several yards away, alive and staring at the same impossible overlap in the street. Behind them, the Purge Cannon fired. Blue light swallowed the doorway. Mia and three civilians were safely inside the shield. Jace was not.
