Chapter 770: Chapter 353: An Interesting Misunderstanding—But Is It Really a Misunderstanding? (Part 2)
He met Kira’s scrutinizing gaze, his face devoid of any ripples, and shook his head slowly.
"You’re overthinking. It’s just a token of appreciation from a student to a coach between friends."
"A token of appreciation?" Kira almost laughed out loud. A five-thousand US dollar token of appreciation? That’s a fairytale!
But looking into Lin Yu’an’s deep and calm eyes, she felt that when he said this, it seemed... he was serious.
He truly didn’t think it was such a big deal.
Kira watched him, finally showing a thoughtful smile on her face. She no longer pressed the matter, simply nodded meaningfully.
"Alright then." She picked up the black card and quickly entered a long string of numbers into the card reader, then turned the machine towards Lin Yu’an, "Friend, enter the password."
Lin Yu’an calmly entered the password, accompanied by a light beep and the sound of a long receipt printing out. This transaction, totaling over seventy thousand US dollars, was officially completed.
Soon, Riven pushed a giant shopping cart, humming a tune as she returned from the shop entrance.
"Done?" She saw a pile of packed gear on the ground and didn’t notice anything unusual.
"Yeah, let’s go. We still have lots of stuff to buy." Lin Yu’an naturally took over the shopping cart from her and started to help move the pile of expensive "toys" onto the pickup truck outside.
Kira leaned against the doorway, crossing her arms as she watched the sea-blue Raptor pickup disappear into the traffic.
She glanced back at the wall, at the piece of "sacred relic" that was about to be sent off, and displayed a contented smile akin to an aunt’s.
"Silly niece," she murmured to herself, "looks like you’ve truly hit the jackpot this time."
Her aunt-like smile didn’t last more than a few seconds before it was replaced by an excitement she couldn’t contain.
She pulled out her phone and expertly dialed a number.
"Hey, Mom! Mommy! Mummyyyy! My dear beautiful, most wonderful mom in the world!" Her voice was filled with the enthusiasm and joy of a little daughter, syrupy sweet.
An elegant elderly woman’s voice came from the other end of the line, strong and full of spirit: "Compose yourself, my little sweetheart. Who’s car have you scratched this time? Or are you trying to get an advance on next month’s pocket money?"
"Neither!" Kira said with a schadenfreude tone, her voice mysterious, "Mom, guess who I ran into today? Your beloved granddaughter, Riven!"
"Oh? She’s a girl even more troublesome than you. What’s she up to?" The elderly lady on the phone, Elizabeth Montgomery, was clearly both fond and exasperated with her granddaughter.
Kira dragged her voice humorously, "She brought a man!"
"What?!" The voice on the other end instantly went up an octave, filled with alertness.
"Oh great! Whose family is he from? What’s his name? What’s his job? He’s not one of those brainless fools who only know how to drive sports cars, right?"
"No!" Kira’s excitement reached its peak. She lowered her voice as if sharing a state secret, "He’s an Eastern guy, tall and handsome, very polite! Most importantly..."
She cleared her throat and spoke in an extremely exaggerated tone, "I simply, slightly, ’accidentally’ recommended some of the ’good’ items from our shop to him."
"And as a result, the guy didn’t even blink and spent nearly eighty thousand US dollars on gear for Riven!"
There was silence on the other end as Elizabeth clearly processed the information.
"And," Kira continued, adding more fuel to the gossip, "I bet you, the way Riven looks at him, there’s definitely something going on!"
"Looks like I need to ask Mike what’s really going on." Elizabeth’s voice was filled with keen interest.
"Sweetheart, you’ve done a great job. Now hurry on home, come help me prepare today’s celebration dinner, and remember to buy candles."
"Okay, Mom!" Kira eagerly agreed.
"I’ll call your stubborn brother right now; I want to see if he, as a father, is even a little concerned about his daughter’s lifelong affair!"
With that, the phone was decisively hung up. Kira looked at her phone, a victorious smile on her face.
Far away at the dock, Mike glanced at the caller ID—"Mom," his expression instantly becoming a bit helpless with a hint of... headache.
He walked to the side and answered the phone.
"Hey, Mom... Yes, we’ll be there on time tonight. What? How did you know?"
This Captain Mike, who was the boss out at sea, was now akin to a child caught in wrongdoing, continuously explaining.
"No, Mom, he’s not Riven’s boyfriend, just my student... Yes, a Chinese student..."
"What eighty thousand US dollars? No, I swear it’s not what you think! What nonsense has Kira been telling you?!"
His voice grew weaker and weaker, clearly losing ground under the strong aura over the phone.
"Dinner? Tonight? No, didn’t we agree it would just be family for the celebration?"
"No... I didn’t... Don’t... Okay, okay... I understand, Mom. I’ll ask his opinion."
After hanging up the phone, Mike let out a long sigh, his face holding a very complex expression.
Meanwhile, Riven had restarted the car engine, "Alright, Captain, now we’re off to handle the supply duties, right?"
"Almost." Lin Yu’an opened his iPad, pulling up a highly professional supply list in PPT format.
