Invincible through Touching Corpses
Chapter 681 - 651: Military Rank
With a lead of over a million Points on the second-ranked Wan Feiyang, he had already secured the top spot on the leaderboard in the eyes of the ordinary students.
Because of this, the attention everyone paid to Lin Xinghai, the top genius, was absolutely unprecedented.
Of course, only a few who knew the inside story understood that the final winner of the individual Points leaderboard had not yet been decided.
After all, if the students at the Peak of Body Shaping Realm could seize this opportunity to break through to the Divine Demon Realm, they would be able to accept Fourth Level Tasks—and a single one of those tasks was worth over a million Points.
In that case, Lin Xinghai’s lead would mean nothing.
What’s more, even without factoring in Fourth Level Tasks, the rewards for killing the current Fourth Level Mutated Zombies had doubled due to their surge in power. A single kill was now worth at least one million Points, with some netting as much as two million.
Therefore, if someone managed to break through to the Divine Demon Realm, it was entirely possible for Lin Xinghai to be surpassed.
Lin Xinghai merely glanced at the leaderboard before walking toward the mission assignment window.
"What mission are you looking to take this time?" Huang Nuomeng asked, seeing Lin Xinghai approach.
"I’m planning to take a mission in the central district. Do you have any good suggestions?" Lin Xinghai asked directly.
Most people decided on a mission before they came to the counter.
But Lin Xinghai had gotten to know her over the course of the afternoon. He would usually come straight to her and ask if there were any urgent clearing missions, then take care of them for her.
And so, over time, the two had grown familiar with each other.
When Huang Nuomeng heard his request, a hint of surprise crossed her face. She lowered her voice and advised, "You’re going to the central district, too? I heard something isn’t right there. It could become extremely dangerous."
"I know," Lin Xinghai said with a nod. "But the appearance of the Blood Bags forces our hand. If we don’t go, we’ll fall behind."
Huang Nuomeng nodded in understanding and said no more. She quickly began typing on her computer. "There are four missions in the central district that seem suitable for your squad. Their designations are 3-A118, 3-B597..."
As she spoke, she quickly pulled up the four missions so Lin Xinghai could review the intelligence provided for each.
After a quick scan, Lin Xinghai made his decision. "I’ll take mission 3-A118."
It was the only one of the missions located in one of the four areas Little Fatty had mentioned.
After accepting the mission, Lin Xinghai asked casually, "By the way, I was wondering, is it possible to contact the Divine Demon Realm experts in the core district from here?"
Although Huang Nuomeng was extremely curious about what Lin Xinghai was planning, she didn’t ask.
Instead, she thought for a moment before shaking her head. "Because the green toxic fog blocks the signal, we can’t contact the core district directly. The signal has to be forwarded through a series of relay stations, so the requirements for use are extremely strict."
"Generally speaking, only Divine Demon Realm experts or officers with a General Level rank or higher can contact the core district at will."
"Of course, there might be methods I’m not aware of. I suggest you ask our supervisor here. Perhaps he has a way."
Though a little disappointed, Lin Xinghai wasn’t too surprised. If there was no way to do it here, he would just have to approach the academy’s higher-ups.
But since she had given him a suggestion, Lin Xinghai wanted to give it a try. "Alright, then. Could you introduce me to the supervisor here?"
"Of course. I’ll send the supervisor a message and ask if he’s free," Huang Nuomeng said as she quickly began typing on her computer.
Just a moment later, Huang Nuomeng said with some surprise, "The supervisor says he’s on his way over."
As she spoke, she glanced around, and her gaze soon settled on a man in his sixties walking over from the corridor to the right.
"That’s our Mission Hall supervisor, Elder Guo."
Lin Xinghai followed her gaze. The man was dressed simply in a military uniform with no insignia whatsoever, making him look like an ordinary, aging veteran.
Lin Xinghai realized the man looked vaguely familiar. He seemed to like pacing back and forth near the entrance of the Mission Hall. Lin Xinghai had seen him a few times and had assumed he was just an old veteran on patrol; he never would have guessed he was the supervisor of the Mission Hall.
"Comrade Lin, I heard you were looking for me. What can I do for you?" Elder Guo said with a broad smile as he approached Lin Xinghai.
"Elder Guo, hello. You... know me?" Lin Xinghai asked, surprised.
"What a thing to say! I am the supervisor of the Mission Hall, after all. Even if it’s just a temporary position, I’d be seriously neglecting my duties if I didn’t even recognize the genius at the top of the Points leaderboard, wouldn’t I?" Elder Guo said, feigning displeasure.
"Ahem! My mistake." Lin Xinghai coughed lightly and quickly changed the subject. "Elder Guo, I’d like to contact my teacher. He’s in the core district. Is there any way to get in touch with him?"
"A small matter. I happen to have the clearance for that. We can use my credentials to contact him in a bit. And if you’d like, I can help you submit a request so you can make contact directly yourself next time," Elder Guo said with a chuckle.
Lin Xinghai said in surprise, "Is the clearance request difficult? I heard you need to be a Divine Demon Realm expert or have a General Level rank or higher to contact the core district."
"It would be for anyone else, but the Secret Technique you developed was a massive contribution!"
"Because of the Secret Technique you contributed, our military was able to kill over fifty Fourth Level Mutated Zombies in a single afternoon. The more Fourth Level Mutated Zombies our Divine Demon Realm experts kill, the greater your contribution becomes."
"I estimate that after all this is over, your military rank will jump several levels. It’s not impossible that you’ll be promoted directly to Major General. Even if you don’t make it to Major General, a promotion to Senior Colonel is a sure thing," Elder Guo said with a sigh of emotion.
If that were to happen, Lin Xinghai would be the youngest and most rapidly promoted general in history.
This time, Lin Xinghai was truly stunned. The members of the Xinghai Squad following behind him were even more dumbfounded.
After all, the Secret Technique "Life-Sacrificing Strike" was known only to the higher-ups; to everyone else, it was still classified.
Therefore, they had no idea what Lin Xinghai had done. One could only imagine their shock at suddenly hearing he was likely to be promoted to a general.
"Then I’ll be troubling you, Elder Guo," Lin Xinghai said quickly, snapping out of his daze.
Elder Guo waved his hand dismissively. The two continued to talk as they walked toward the communications department.
