Chapter 77: Chapter 77 | Forty Meters From The Node!

She traced the route on the map without touching it. Her eyes moving through the passages.

"The third chamber," she said. "We were inside the third chamber when the escalation hit. That puts us at approximately coordinate reference 9-Echo-2."

She looked at the map.

"The node was deeper," she said. "We had not reached it. Based on the signal Mira felt and the direction it was coming from — northeast of 9-Echo-2."

"How far northeast," Kai said.

"That’s Mira’s component," Shira said.

He went to Mira’s door.

======

Three knocks.

It opened.

She had the board ready.

He explained what they needed. The frequency bearing translated into coordinate notation. The direction and approximate distance the Resonance signal had been coming from when she felt it inside the dungeon.

She held the marker.

She wrote: The signal was coming from northeast. I felt it through the walls of the third chamber. The Resonance Gift measures frequency intensity — the closer the source, the stronger the signal. Inside the third chamber the signal was strong enough that the source was within two hundred meters.

He read it.

"Northeast of 9-Echo-2," he said. "Within two hundred meters."

She wrote: The signal was strongest from the upper northeast wall of the third chamber. If the map has passage notation for that wall—

He brought the map to the door and held it where she could not see it but described it to her.

She listened.

She wrote: There should be a passage leading northeast from the upper chamber wall. If there is the node is in the passage or the chamber at the end of it.

He looked at the map.

There was a passage. Narrow. Leading northeast from exactly the position she described. The survey had not extended it — the mapping team had not gone in that direction. The passage was marked as unmapped.

He told her.

She wrote: That’s it. The node is in the unmapped passage. Within two hundred meters of the third chamber’s northeast wall.

He brought the information back to the table.

Han Dori looked at the map.

He looked at the unmapped passage notation.

"That’s enough for the unsealing application," he said quietly. "With the route geometry and the frequency bearing cross-referenced to the coordinate notation — that’s a documented location. Specific enough to mandate investigation."

Shira was looking at the unmapped passage on the map.

"We were forty meters from that passage when the dungeon escalated," she said.

Nobody said anything for a moment.

Kai looked at the map.

’Forty meters,’ he thought. ’You were forty meters from what someone decided was worth destroying an expedition for. Worth three years of containment. Worth everything that followed.’

He folded the map carefully.

"How long to format the documentation," he said to Han Dori.

"Four hours if we start now," Han Dori said.

"Start now," Kai said.

=========

They worked through the morning.

Han Dori at the table with his laptop. Kai relaying information between Shira at the window and Mira’s door as each component of the documentation needed verification. The route geometry and the frequency bearing built into a single formatted submission.

Shira did not leave the window area except to check specific details on the map twice. She had the physio sheet on the armrest but she did not open it.

Mira’s door stayed open three inches the whole morning. The cane visible inside the gap. She was listening to everything.

At one point Han Dori asked a technical question about the passage wall notation that Kai could not answer. Before he could go to Shira, Mira’s board appeared through the door gap and held itself at the angle where Kai could read it.

It had the answer.

Han Dori looked at the board in the door gap and then at Kai.

Kai said nothing.

Han Dori went back to typing.

========

Lunch was late.

Kai made it at one-fifteen. Everyone ate at the table except Han Dori who declined and kept working.

Shira ate quickly and efficiently. Mira ate neatly. Neither of them said much.

Halfway through Mira’s board came up.

The information leak, she wrote. The person inside the hero authority system. When you find out who it is.

She held the board.

She wrote: Tell me.

Kai looked at the board.

"I will," he said.

She lowered it.

She ate the rest of her rice.

At two-fifteen Han Dori closed the laptop.

"Done," he said. "The documentation is formatted and ready for submission. Route geometry, frequency bearing, coordinate cross-reference, chain of custody notation for both witness sources." He looked at Kai. "If Denko can coordinate the simultaneous filing with this as the unsealing application anchor — we’re ready."

Kai looked at the folder.

Seven days.

"Thank you," he said.

Han Dori picked up his jacket.

At the door he paused.

"The petition against my assessment," he said. "The bias claim. I want you to know — I took your application because of who your wives are. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But the assessment itself was clean. Everything I evaluated was real."

Kai looked at him.

"I know," Kai said.

"The canyon correction was real too," Han Dori said. "Forty-one minutes. I would have filed it regardless of your application."

"I know," Kai said.

Han Dori nodded once and left.

Kai closed the door.

===========

Evening.

After dinner. After the dishes.

Kai sat on the couch.

Shira came out of her room and wheeled to the window. She stayed there in the dark looking at the street.

He let her.

After a while she said, still to the window: "The passage on the map. The unmapped one."

"Yes," he said.

"When the filing goes through and the dungeon gets unsealed," she said. "The hero authority will document the node."

"Yes," he said.

"And the Renmei family’s classification manipulation will be on official record," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the street.

"Good," she said. Just that.

She stayed at the window for another few minutes.

Then she went back to her room.

He pressed his palm to the cushion.

Both rhythms. Both present.

Mira’s room — the audio reader starting late. She had been awake longer than usual. The music started. She was into the first phrase within thirty seconds.

He listened through the Resonance Echo.

Twenty-two seconds. End.

Second phrase — twenty-seven.

Third — thirty-three.

She paused after the third. Longer than usual.

Then instead of the fourth phrase she did something she had not done before. She went back to the first phrase. Started it again. Fresh.

Twenty-five seconds. Let it end.

She was practicing the same phrase twice. Refining it.

’She’s not just extending anymore,’ he thought. ’She’s going back and making it better.’

He sat with that.

The system chimed.

『 INVESTMENT RETURN — WEDNESDAY. 』

『 FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN: 』 『 Specialty ingredients Day 32 — both rotations: 580 coins queued. 』 『 Documentation preparation time — Han Dori: 0 coins. Invested as professional service. Non-financial return only. 』

『 NON-FINANCIAL RETURN: 』 『 Nerve Sense — tactical threat assessment upgraded. Host identified surveillance withdrawal before any other indicator. Early warning function active. 』

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 2.7 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 2.7 / 10. 』

『 The system notes: 』 『 Shira Voss looked at her own route on the expedition map today. 』 『 Three years since she walked those passages. 』 『 She read the coordinate notation for the chamber where the dungeon escalated and she did not say anything and she did not look away. 』 『 Her right hand pressed the table edge and stayed there. 』 『 The system notes this because Host saw it and did not say anything either. 』 『 Both of them knew what it meant and neither of them needed to name it. 』 『 That is also a kind of understanding. 』 『 Seven days. 』 『 The system is ready. 』
