Kai woke up at four-fifteen and immediately knew something was wrong.

Not in the apartment. Both rhythms steady. Both wives present.

Outside.

He pressed his palm to the floor and expanded the Nerve Sense to full external range.

The building perimeter was clear. No watchers at either corner. The rotation that had been running since Monday was gone.

’They pulled the surveillance,’ he thought.

He sat up.

People did not pull surveillance when they were giving up. They pulled it when they had gotten what they needed. Or when they were about to move differently.

He sat on the couch in the dark and thought about that.

Then his phone lit up.

Denko. Five-oh-three in the morning.

He answered.

"The licensing board," Denko said. His voice had the quality of someone who had been awake for a while. "Someone filed a formal petition to review your provisional license status. Filed at midnight last night."

Kai looked at the ceiling.

"On what grounds," he said.

"Combat performance pathway irregularities," Denko said. "The petition claims your assessment sponsor may have had prior knowledge of your wives’ identities and a personal interest in your application’s success. It’s citing Han Dori’s canyon dungeon correction as evidence of bias."

Kai was quiet.

"If the review proceeds it suspends the provisional license pending investigation," Denko said. "A suspended provisional license means the protective jurisdiction becomes contestable again."

"How long does a review take," Kai said.

"Standard timeline is four to six weeks," Denko said. "But the petition is citing urgency grounds. They’re asking for an expedited review."

"How expedited," Kai said.

"Seven days," Denko said.

The filing was in ten days.

If the license review went through, the jurisdiction would be in question before the filing could happen.

"Who filed it," Kai said.

"The petition is filed through a legal firm," Denko said. "The firm has a contracts relationship with a family that has long-standing ties to the Renmei classification authority. Three steps removed, same as the stairwell operatives."

’The same people,’ Kai thought. ’Same network. Different mechanism. They couldn’t take the jurisdiction through the civil welfare board so they’re going for the license itself.’

"Han Dori," Kai said.

"I already called him," Denko said. "He’s filing a response to the petition this morning. The canyon correction was filed through official channels before your assessment began — the timeline documentation is clean. The bias claim is thin."

"But it buys them time," Kai said.

"Yes," Denko said. "That’s the point. They don’t need to win the review. They just need seven days of uncertainty."

Kai sat in the dark.

"Move the filing," he said.

Denko paused.

"To when," he said.

"Seven days," Kai said. "Match their timeline. We file before the review can be scheduled."

"That’s aggressive," Denko said.

"They’re being aggressive," Kai said.

A pause.

"I’ll call Han Dori," Denko said. "If the evidence chain is ready."

"Is it ready," Kai said.

"Almost," Denko said. "The witness testimony is secured. The supply chain trace is documented. The oversight board connection is on record. The one thing we don’t have fully documented is the location data from your wives."

"I’ll get it today," Kai said.

"Today," Denko confirmed. "I need it formatted for hero authority evidentiary standards by tomorrow morning."

"You’ll have it," Kai said.

He hung up.

He sat with it for a moment.

Then he got up and made tea.

Breakfast.

He left cups outside both doors as usual. He started the specialty rotation. He waited.

Shira came out first. She positioned herself and looked at her bowl and then at him.

She could always tell. He did not know how. He had been told his face showed nothing and he believed that was generally true.

But Shira read him the way she read dungeon approach patterns — not from what was visible but from what was slightly off.

"What happened," she said.

He told her over breakfast. The petition. The license review. Seven days. The evidence chain needing their location documentation formalized today.

He told her straight. No softening.

She listened.

When he finished she picked up her spoon and ate.

"The location data," she said. "I need the full format specifications."

"I’ll get them from Denko," he said.

"Get them now," she said. "I want to start this morning."

He texted Denko while she was still eating. The specifications came back in four minutes. He put the phone on the table where she could read it.

She read it without picking it up.

"Doable," she said. "Mira’s frequency bearing will need to be cross-referenced against the route geometry. The format requires both components to be submitted together not separately."

"Which means we work on it together," Kai said.

She looked at the specifications again.

"Yes," she said. Flat. Already done.

Mira came out five minutes later. She found her chair. She had the board uncapped before she sat.

The board came up.

Something changed.

"The licensing board received a petition to review my provisional status," Kai said. "Filed at midnight. We have seven days before they can schedule the expedited review. We’re moving the filing to match."

She held the board.

She wrote: Seven days.

"Seven days," he confirmed.

She lowered the board.

She looked at the space between them.

She wrote: What do you need from us.

"Location documentation," he said. "Formatted to hero authority evidentiary standards. Shira’s route geometry and your frequency bearing cross-referenced and submitted together."

She wrote: When.

"Tomorrow morning," he said.

She put the board down.

She picked up her spoon.

She ate.

Halfway through the meal she reached for the marker.

The surveillance is gone, she wrote. She had not been told this. She had felt it through the Sound Mapping before he had mentioned it.

"Since sometime overnight," Kai said.

They don’t need to watch anymore, she wrote. They have what they needed.

"Yes," Kai said.

The petition, she wrote. They knew the filing was coming. They knew the timeline. Someone told them.

Kai looked at the board.

He had been thinking about this since Denko’s call.

"The information leak," he said. "Same person who told them about the monitoring gap."

She wrote: Inside the hero authority system.

"Yes," he said.

She put the board down.

She ate the rest of her porridge without reaching for the marker again.

Shira was looking at the specifications on the table. Not eating. Reading.

"The route geometry requires GPS-equivalent coordinate notation," she said. "I don’t have a coordinate reference for the dungeon interior. I have passage geometry and timing but not coordinates."

Kai thought about this.

"Han Dori has the original dungeon survey maps from the expedition briefing documents," he said. "The maps have coordinate notation. We can overlay your route geometry onto the maps to generate the coordinate references."

Shira looked at the specifications.

"Get the maps," she said.

He texted Han Dori.

Han Dori responded in six minutes. The maps were in his office documentation. He could have them to Kai within the hour.

"One hour," Kai told Shira.

She picked up her spoon and finally ate.

Han Dori arrived at nine-thirty with the maps and a folder of documentation Kai had not asked for but needed.

He spread the maps on the kitchen table.

Shira wheeled herself to the table and looked at them.

She did not say anything for a moment.

Kai watched her face. The maps showed the dungeon as it had been surveyed before the expedition — passage layouts, chamber dimensions, coordinate notation at every junction. The expedition route marked with a dotted line.

She was reading her own route on a map.

Three years after she had walked it.

Her expression did not change. But her right hand found the edge of the table and pressed against it.

The index finger. Not practicing. Just there.

"The second branch junction," she said. "The survey shows it at coordinate reference 7-Delta-4. I remember it. We turned left at the second junction."
