Chapter 42: Chapter 42 | Injuries

He was back up immediately.

The knee joint damage was slowing the elemental’s lower movement. He circled to its right side to stay away from the functioning left arm.

Second hit. Right shoulder joint from behind.

The elemental tried to turn. The damaged knee slowed the rotation. It couldn’t complete the turn before Kai was already moving to the third strike position.

Right knee again. Same joint. Second impact on the same point.

The elemental went down.

Kai stood in the rubble of three stone elementals in a C-rank dungeon and breathed.

His left side was complaining. His knees were fine. His hands were steady.

He pressed his palm to the dungeon floor.

Nothing else in range.

He touched the communication device on his collar.

"Three elementals down," he said. "All three via joint strike sequence. I took a glancing hit from the second one. Left side. Bruised ribs. Not serious. Ready to continue or exit on your call."

Han Dori’s voice came back clear. "Exit. Assessment run is three elementals in controlled engagement. You’ve done it. Come out."

Kai looked at the three piles of rubble.

Then he walked back to the entrance.

=======

Han Dori was waiting outside.

He looked at Kai’s posture immediately. Read the left side compensation the way assessors read things.

"Show me," he said.

Kai lifted the protective layer. The bruise was already visible through the underlayer. Deep purple spreading across two ribs.

Han Dori pressed two fingers against it with the practiced touch of someone who had done this many times.

"Bruised," he said. "Not broken. You took a hit."

"Second elemental," Kai said. "It responded faster than the first. I was still in rotation recovery when the swing came."

"What did you do wrong," Han Dori said.

"I underestimated the response interval," Kai said. "First elemental had a standard pause after absorbing a hit. Second elemental had no pause. I didn’t account for individual variation."

"What will you do differently next run," Han Dori said.

"Assume no pause after hit delivery," Kai said. "Start evasive movement simultaneously with the strike, not after."

Han Dori made a note on his tablet.

"Threat perception," he said. "You called the third elemental’s position behind you in the dark at twelve meters range without visual. That’s not something a standard hero does at C-rank. Most of them would have missed it entirely."

"The Nerve Sense picks up weight displacement," Kai said. "Two tons of dungeon stone is not subtle."

"No," Han Dori said. "But most people don’t have a sense that reads weight displacement through air and stone simultaneously. Yours does."

He made another note.

"Output consistency under sustained engagement," Han Dori said. "First elemental — three clean hits. How did the output feel compared to training?"

"Stronger," Kai said. "The air pressure increase was real. I adjusted expectation down after the first hit."

Han Dori nodded.

"Good adjustment," he said. "Most unclassified applicants overcorrect in the other direction. They feel stronger and start swinging harder than the strike requires. You calibrated."

He looked at his tablet.

He looked at Kai.

"Run one complete," Han Dori said. "Passed on all three criteria. Threat perception, output consistency, decision adaptation."

Kai said nothing.

"Run two in four days," Han Dori said. "Different dungeon. Different monster type. I’m going to put you in something faster than stone elementals. The Nerve Sense will still work but the two-beat preparatory window will be shorter. You’ll need to react on beat one."

"Understood," Kai said.

Han Dori extended his hand.

Kai shook it.

"Ice pack for the ribs," Han Dori said. "And eat something. You burned through more than you think down there."

"I know," Kai said.

He picked up his bag and walked to the train station.

=========

He got home at four-fifteen.

He hung up his jacket.

From the living room he heard Shira’s wheelchair stop moving.

From Mira’s room the audio reader cut off.

He walked to the living room doorway.

Shira was in her wheelchair by the window. She looked at him immediately. Not at his face first. At his posture. His left side. Her eyes stopped there.

"You took a hit," she said.

"Bruised ribs," he said. "Two. Not broken."

Shira looked at his left side for another moment.

"Second elemental," Kai said. "Faster response interval than the first. I didn’t account for individual variation."

Shira said nothing.

Then she said: "Did you pass."

"Run one complete," Kai said. "Passed all three criteria."

Shira looked at the window.

She said nothing for a moment.

"The response interval variation," she said. "Each elemental in the same dungeon will have slightly different timing based on formation age. Older formation equals more crystallized joint structure equals faster response. You can read formation age through the Nerve Sense before engagement if you spend two or three seconds on a detailed scan."

Kai reached for the notebook.

"Don’t write it now," Shira said. "Sit down. Your ribs are bruised."

Kai put the notebook away.

He sat on the couch.

Mira appeared in the hallway. She aimed toward him. Her head tilted.

She wrote something and held it up.

You’re favouring your left side.

"Bruised ribs," Kai said. "I’m fine."

She wrote: That’s what you always say.

"Because I’m always fine," Kai said.

She wrote: You were hit.

"Yes," Kai said.

She lowered the board.

She disappeared back into the hallway.

Kai heard her in the kitchen. Cabinet opening. The specific sound of the freezer drawer.

She came back with an ice pack wrapped in a dish towel.

She walked directly to the couch. She held it out toward where his voice had been. Not quite the right angle. Two centimeters off.

He reached out and took it from her hand.

"Thank you," he said.

Mira said nothing.

She went back to her room.

Kai looked at the ice pack.

Then he looked at the kitchen where she had just been.

Then at Shira who was looking at the window with the particular expression she used when she had noticed something and was not going to comment on it.

He pressed the ice pack to his left side and leaned back on the couch.

’I go into a dungeon and come back with bruised ribs,’ he thought. ’And somehow the most surprising thing about today is Mira knowing exactly where the ice packs are.’

He looked at the ceiling.

’She memorized the kitchen layout,’ he thought. ’Every drawer. Every cabinet. When did she do that?’

He pressed the ice pack more firmly against his ribs.

He was smiling.

He kept it off his face.

He was not entirely successful.

Kai read the last three lines.

He looked at the ceiling.

He looked at the ice pack on his ribs.

He thought about Mira four days ago. Learning the kitchen layout. Not for cooking. Not for herself. For him. For the specific contingency of him coming home hurt.

He thought about Shira at her doorway the night before. Come back. Said flatly because it mattered too much to say any other way.

’311 million coins,’ he thought.

Then immediately: ’That is not the thing that matters about today.’

He pressed the ice pack to his ribs.

From the kitchen he could hear Shira making something. Tea probably. She had started making tea in the afternoons the way he made it in the mornings. Without being asked. Without announcing it.

From Mira’s room the audio reader came back on.

Everything settled back into the ordinary rhythm of the apartment.

Kai lay on the couch with the ice pack on his ribs and the system notification still floating at the edge of his vision and thought:

’Run two in four days.’

’Different dungeon. Faster monsters. React on beat one.’

’I’ll be ready.’

Shira came out of the kitchen with two cups.

She set one on the table beside the couch without looking at him.

She went back to the window.

Kai reached out and took the cup.

He drank it.

It was exactly the right temperature.

Sean smiled and after he had finished drinking the tea Shira had made , he fell asleep with a smile on his face.
