Chapter 41: Chapter 41 | Ambush

He didn’t need the light.

He could feel the walls. Feel the floor. Feel the three elementals around the corner forty-two feet ahead like they were broadcasting their position directly to him.

He stopped three meters from the corner.

He waited.

He felt the first elemental’s weight shift.

Beat one.

He stepped around the corner.

The elemental was mid-preparation for a patrol movement. Not attacking. Moving. It was roughly humanoid, two meters tall, stone surface irregular and dark grey. The joint connections at the shoulders and knees were exactly where Han Dori’s notes had described. Slightly lighter colored stone. Older formation. More brittle under impact.

The elemental registered his presence.

It stopped moving.

Beat two arrived early. The joint compression beginning.

Kai was already moving.

He covered the distance in four steps. The Gale Strike rotation building in his forearm exactly as trained. Elbow locked on the first beat of his own internal count.

He released at the right shoulder joint.

The impact was harder than training. Noticeably harder. The fifteen percent air pressure increase was real. He filed that away immediately and adjusted his expectation downward so he didn’t overcommit on the next strike.

The elemental staggered.

Not down. Staggered.

It swung back. The preparatory vibration came one beat ahead of the actual strike and Kai was already stepping left when the stone fist passed through the space where he had been.

’Two beat warning,’ he thought. ’Exactly what Shira said.’

He was inside the elemental’s guard now. Closer than it was designed to deal with. He hit the left shoulder joint from the inside angle.

Second hit.

The elemental’s left arm dropped. Joint destabilized.

The third hit was the clean one. Right knee joint from the side while it was compensating for the dropped left arm. The compensation shift had changed its weight distribution and the knee was exposed.

He released the full rotation at point blank range.

The elemental collapsed.

It didn’t explode or dissolve. Just stopped. Settled into a pile of rubble that had been a dungeon monster two seconds ago.

Kai stood over it breathing.

’Three hits,’ he thought. ’Shira said three.’

He turned to the other two.

========

The second elemental was harder.

It had seen the first one go down and the dungeon instinct had shifted its approach pattern. Instead of the standard patrol movement it was moving toward him with a different weight distribution. Faster. More aggressive.

He tracked the preparatory vibration.

Beat one. Beat two. He moved.

The swing missed. But only by a margin that was less comfortable than the first elemental.

’Faster than expected,’ he thought. ’Don’t get behind.’

He circled. The elemental tracked him. He could feel it tracking him the same way he was tracking it. Two Nerve Senses in the same space, except one was made of stone and operated on dungeon instinct and the other was him.

He waited for the next preparatory cycle.

Felt it.

Stepped inside the strike window.

First hit. Left knee joint. Clean.

The elemental adjusted faster than the first one had. The joint destabilized but the elemental’s response was to drop its weight lower rather than compensate with the upper body. Lower center of gravity. Harder to unbalance.

’Smart,’ he thought. Then immediately: ’It’s a rock. It’s not smart. It’s dungeon programming.’

He circled again.

The adjusted posture had exposed the right shoulder joint more than before. The lower center of gravity had to go somewhere and it had gone to the legs which had pulled the upper body weight backward.

He hit the right shoulder joint.

Second hit.

The elemental came back at him immediately. No pause between Kai’s strike and its response. He was still in the rotation recovery when the swing came.

He couldn’t fully evade.

The stone fist caught his left side. Glancing. The protective layer absorbed most of it but not all. His ribs registered the impact with the specific complaint of bruised bone rather than broken.

He breathed through it.

’That’s going to be unpleasant tomorrow,’ he thought.

He found the third strike angle. Left knee joint again. Same spot as the first hit. Already destabilized, a second impact at the same point would complete the collapse.

He released.

The elemental went down.

He stood over the rubble and pressed his free hand to his left side and breathed for three seconds.

Not seriously hurt. But touched.

He assessed it through the Nerve Sense. Bruised. Two ribs protesting but structurally intact. Movement capacity unaffected.

’Fine,’ he thought. ’Continue.’

—----

The third elemental had moved.

He had been tracking three presences when he entered. Two down. The third had relocated during the second fight. He could feel it but it was no longer where he had first placed it.

He expanded the Nerve Sense to full range.

Forty meters. Sixty. Eighty.

There.

The third elemental was behind him. Between him and the entrance passage.

’Of course,’ he thought.

He turned around.

The passage behind him was empty to the eye. But the Nerve Sense showed the weight displacement of two tons of dungeon stone standing very still twelve meters back in the dark.

’It’s waiting,’ he thought. ’Dungeon programming that ambushes. That’s C-rank behaviour.’

He moved forward slowly. He wanted to control the engagement distance. Get close enough for the Gale Strike range but not so close that the first swing connected before he could read the preparatory vibration.

Eight meters.

The elemental moved.

Beat one came and Kai read it immediately but the second beat was faster than either of the first two elementals. The interval between beats was half what he had experienced before. Either individual variation in elemental type or the ambush posture was changing the mechanics.

He moved on beat one instead of waiting for beat two.

The swing passed over him. He had ducked rather than stepped which put him lower than expected and the angle for the shoulder joint was wrong from this position.

He took the knee joint instead.

First hit. Right knee.

The elemental came down on him from above with the second arm. He rolled left. Stone impacted the floor where he had been with a sound like a small explosion.
