Xavier put the phone down and opened his laptop.

Personal statement, he thought. Two paragraphs. Let’s get it done.

He spent the morning writing it properly. Not the version that sounded like a lawyer had touched it — the version that sounded like an eighteen year old student dealing with something outside his control during exam period. Patricia had given him the framework. He filled it in himself.

Sent it to Patricia at 10AM.

She came back with minor edits at 10:23AM.

He incorporated them. Filed the final version through the faculty portal at 10:47AM.

Done, he thought. Resit to be scheduled. Campus Admin has been told — somebody reliable this time or the arrangement ends.

He cycled his morning donations from the desk.

$26,277,383, he noted. Tuesday cap running properly.

His phone buzzed. Faculty board acknowledgement of receipt. Case under review. Decision within five working days.

Five working days, he thought. Fine.

He checked Vincent’s messages. Nothing urgent. The businesses running. Raymond Kwesi’s legal claim through Vantage Commercial Holdings had collapsed Monday afternoon when Patricia filed for dismissal and the opposing legal team discovered their operational funding had evaporated. The case was effectively dead before it had been heard.

Karma Return, he thought. Does what it says.

He made coffee. Sat back at the desk. Looked at the room.

Tuesday, he thought. School handled. Gym tomorrow with Jade. Campus Wednesday.

And Amira, he thought. Who covered for him with the department administrator without being asked.

He opened her email. The Kenvale General phase two funding allocation she’d sent Sunday night — a detailed breakdown of research costs across the next six months, formatted exactly the way the hospital committee wanted it, with notes in the margins where she’d anticipated questions the committee might ask and had pre-addressed them.

She prepared for questions they haven’t asked yet, he thought. Of course she did.

He read through it properly. Made three notes. Sent them back to her.

Xavier: three comments. See attached. Overall it’s strong.

Amira: I sent this Sunday night. You’re only reading it now.

Xavier: I’ve been busy.

Amira: Xavier it’s Tuesday.

Xavier: I read it Tuesday. That counts.

Amira: ?? are your comments actually useful or are they Xavier-shaped.

Xavier: read them and tell me.

A brief moment.

Amira: ...they’re useful.

Xavier: I know.

Amira: don’t be smug about it.

Xavier: I’m never smug.

Amira: ???? I’ll incorporate them tonight. And you’re coming to campus tomorrow. No excuses.

Xavier: I’ll be there.

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: Amira.

Amira: actually be there.

Xavier: yes sweetheart.

Amira: ?? goodnight.

Xavier: it’s 2PM.

Amira: good afternoon then. Be there tomorrow.

He put the phone down.

Wednesday, he thought. Campus. Amira. Some of it as promised.

He got to campus at 9AM Wednesday.

Kelvin was at the Food and Nutrition block entrance with the stored energy of someone who had been accumulating observations since Friday and had reached the point where not sharing them was becoming physically uncomfortable.

"You were gone," Kelvin said.

"I was away," Xavier said.

"Multiple days," Kelvin said. "You missed the exam."

"It’s being handled," Xavier said.

"Amira told me," Kelvin said. "In the specific tone she uses when she means Xavier is doing something she doesn’t fully approve of but has decided isn’t worth fighting." He fell into step. "Which means exceptional circumstances paperwork of questionable origin."

"Filed legitimately," Xavier said.

"Xavier—"

"Kelvin."

Kelvin pointed at him. "One day something is going to catch up with you. On record."

"Noted," Xavier said. "How are your lectures."

"Don’t change the subject," Kelvin said. Then — "Fine. Mrs. Adeyemi asked about you last week. Said you had an interesting approach to attendance."

"That’s generous of her," Xavier said.

"I thought so too," Kelvin said.

They went inside.

Amira was at her desk.

She looked up when Xavier sat down. The full read — taking him in properly.

"You look different," she said.

"People keep saying that," he said.

"Because it keeps being true," she said. She looked back at her tablet. "The exceptional circumstances paperwork. Patricia filed it Monday. Faculty board acknowledged it yesterday." A brief pause. "I spoke to the department administrator."

Xavier looked at her.

"You didn’t have to do that," he said.

"I know," she said. "I told her you’d been dealing with a family situation. She was understanding." She pushed her glasses up. "The paperwork was unusually well documented apparently. Made it easier."

Amira covering for him with the department administrator, he thought. Without being asked. Without making it a thing.

"Thank you," he said.

She looked at him for a moment. Then back at her tablet.

"Where were you," she said.

Some of it, he’d promised.

"Millhaven," he said.

She looked at him. "Millhaven."

"Yes," he said.

"With someone," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She absorbed it. Filed it the way she filed everything — without drama, into whatever internal system she used for the parts of Xavier she’d decided to accept rather than interrogate.

"Are you okay," she said.

"Yes," he said. "Actually yes."

Something moved in her expression that she didn’t put words to.

"Good," she said. "The phase two meeting is next week. The comments you sent were useful."

"I told you," he said.

"Don’t," she said.

He almost smiled.

Both Millhaven rebounds landed during the lecture.

$29,187,383, he noted under the desk. Both Millhaven rebounds. Mid lecture.

Amira glanced at him sideways.

"Phone," she said quietly.

"Away," he said.

"It vibrated twice," she said.

"Away now," he said.

She almost smiled and kept writing.

Lunch. Xavier, Amira, Kelvin. The cafeteria doing its Wednesday thing.

Kelvin was talking. Xavier half listened and cycled a donation and ate his food.

This, he thought. Still here. Still the base.

"You’re not listening," Kelvin said.

"I’m listening," Xavier said.

"What did I just say," Kelvin said.

"Something about Mrs. Adeyemi," Xavier said.

"Before that," Kelvin said.

Xavier looked at him. "I don’t know Kelvin."

Kelvin pointed at him. "Honest. I appreciate that." He leaned back. "Xavier."

"Kelvin."

"You seem settled," Kelvin said. The genuine version underneath everything. "More than before Millhaven or wherever you went. Like something landed properly."

Xavier looked at him.

Accurate, he thought. More accurate than he knows.

"Go to your afternoon lecture," he said.

"I don’t have one until—"

"Go anyway," he said.

Kelvin stood. Pointed once. Walked away satisfied.

Amira looked at Xavier across the table.

"He’s right," she said.

"I know," he said.

She held his gaze for a moment. The warm certain expression. The one that didn’t need anything around it.

"Thursday tomorrow," she said. "Don’t disappear again."

"I won’t," he said.

She stood. Picked up her tray. Walked out.

Xavier sat alone for a moment.

Settled, he thought. Kelvin’s word.

Right, he thought.

He checked his balance.

$29,187,383, he noted.

He stood up and headed for the exit.

Thursday, he thought. Selene’s restaurant.

The arc settling, he thought. Everything in its place.
