Eighteen hours. He needed to regenerate Essence, prepare tactical options, and find a location where the fight wouldn’t destroy everything around him.

He started walking toward the surface. The Warrens’ perpetual twilight wrapped around him. The thirteenth level’s familiar smell of recycled air and machine oil filled his lungs.

Above him, somewhere beyond the stone and steel and dimensional bedrock, the World Will was watching. And it was sending its enforcers.

Alvian Vance, E-Rank Clearwater, was about to fight reality itself.

He had a cracked sword, acid bones, and the power to dissolve concepts.

It would have to be enough.

[DING!]

[The System suggests the Host find a very empty, very isolated location.]

[The System suggests the Host regenerate Essence before the Enforcers arrive.]

[ETA: 17 hours, 59 minutes.]

The tunnel stretched ahead of him, dark and familiar. His footsteps echoed off the walls. His Clearwater resonance hummed in his bones. And somewhere above, reality began to crack open.

—

Alvian emerged from the Warrens through a maintenance hatch on the thirteenth level’s eastern edge. The air above was cold. Real cold. Not the recycled warmth of the Undercity but actual wind cutting across exposed skin. His tattered shirt did nothing against it.

He ignored the temperature. What mattered was finding the right place to fight.

He processed terrain options as he walked through the pre-dawn streets of the lower commercial district. The Academy was damaged. The Upper Ward was swarming with Royal Guard searching for him. The Undercity was too crowded. A conceptual fight in the thirteenth level would collapse the infrastructure and kill thousands.

He needed empty. He needed isolated. He needed a place where reality could crack open without burying civilians in the rubble.

’The Ashen Wasteland.’

The memory surfaced from Tobias’s old stories. A region sixty kilometers north of the capital, left barren after a Rank 6 dimensional event during the Cataclysm. The land was fused glass and dead earth. No population. No structures. No dimensional significance. The Guilds had surveyed it twice and declared it permanently uninhabitable.

Perfect.

He checked his Essence. Eighty. Two uses of Dissolution of Form. Not enough. He needed to regenerate before the Enforcers arrived.

[DING!]

[Essence: 80/280]

[Passive regeneration rate: 2.5/minute (VIT 855 modifier)]

[Time to full Essence: 80 minutes]

[Time to Fate Enforcer arrival: 17 hours, 42 minutes]

Eighty minutes to full Essence. Seventeen hours to prepare. The math worked. He just needed to get to the Wasteland without being intercepted.

The Royal Guard was searching the capital. His face was on every extranet feed. His Void Step could get him sixty kilometers in a single jump, but each teleport cost fifty Essence and left a dissolution vacuum that would alert anyone nearby.

He calculated. One Void Step to the Ashen Wasteland. Fifty Essence. That would leave him with thirty Essence and a three-meter crater in whatever alley he departed from. Not ideal, but necessary.

He found a narrow service corridor between two warehouse buildings. Empty. No witnesses. No cameras. The walls were grime-coated brick that would dissolve quietly.

He activated Void Step: Annihilation.

The world dissolved. His body ceased to exist at this location and began to exist sixty kilometers north. The transition was instantaneous but he caught the intermediate state. That brief moment where he was neither here nor there. Neither alive nor dead. Neither real nor unreal.

He materialized on a flat expanse of fused glass.

The Ashen Wasteland stretched in every direction. Grey-white terrain that looked like someone had poured molten silica across a plain and let it cool. The ground was smooth in places, jagged in others. No vegetation. No water. No sound except the wind whistling across the glass surface.

Behind him, sixty kilometers south, a three-meter circle of dissolution carved out another piece of the capital’s infrastructure. He didn’t look back.

His Essence read thirty. He sat down on the fused glass and crossed his legs. The surface was cold beneath him. He closed his eyes.

Essence regeneration was passive. He didn’t need to meditate or focus. His body would rebuild its reserves automatically as long as he didn’t use Skills. All he had to do was wait.

Waiting was the hardest part.

His INT 192 didn’t idle. It couldn’t. The enhanced processing ran scenarios in parallel, each one a tactical simulation of the upcoming fight. ℯℯ𝑙.

Scenario one. The Fate Enforcers arrived as physical manifestations. Crystalline law given form. He would use Dissolution of Form to dissolve their conceptual framework. Two uses. Two Enforcers. If there were more than two, he would need to rely on his S-Rank physical Skills, which might not work.

Scenario two. The Enforcers arrived as non-physical presences. Rules that enforced themselves. No body to touch. Dissolution of Form required physical contact. If he couldn’t touch them, the Skill was useless.

Scenario three. The Enforcers arrived as something he hadn’t predicted. He had no data on Fate Enforcers. The System’s warnings were vague. "Conceptual entities designed to correct anomalies by removing the source." That could mean anything.

’Need more information. Can’t get it without fighting them. Can’t fight them without information. Classic trap.’

He opened his System interface. The standard Shop still had items he hadn’t explored. Maybe something useful for conceptual combat.

╔══════════════════════════════╗

║ SYSTEM SHOP

║ Sensory Enhancement Array

║ Cost: 5 KP

║ Effect: Allows Host to

║ perceive conceptual entities

║ for 1 hour.

║ Duration: 60 minutes.

╚══════════════════════════════╝

Five KP. He had fifty-three. He bought it immediately.

[DING!]

[Item acquired: Sensory Enhancement Array.]

[Cost: 5 KP.]

[Remaining KP: 48.]

[Effect: Conceptual perception active for 60 minutes upon activation.]

He didn’t activate it yet. Sixty minutes was too short. He’d save it for when the Enforcers were close enough to detect.

His Essence ticked upward. Thirty-one. Thirty-two. The passive regeneration worked steadily, each point a small victory in the countdown.

He checked the Fate Enforcer timer.

17 hours, 28 minutes.

Plenty of time for Essence recovery. Not enough time for the other thing he needed.

Information.

He turned to the problem. The System knew more than it was telling him. The warnings had been specific enough to be useful but vague enough to be useless. "Conceptual entities." "Remove the source." The language was deliberately imprecise.

’Why does the System talk around the Enforcers? It gives me exact numbers for everything else. EXP costs. Multiplier odds. Timer countdowns. But the Enforcers get vague descriptions and warnings.’

He ran the question through his enhanced processing. The answer came quickly.

The System didn’t know either.

The realization hit him with uncomfortable clarity. The System was a tool. A powerful, probability-bending, reality-hacking tool. But it wasn’t omniscient. It could calculate odds and multiply EXP and trigger evolutions. It couldn’t predict the behavior of entities that existed above its own operational level.

The Fate Enforcers were above the System. That was why the System was nervous. That was why its notifications had shifted from sassy to cautious. It was warning him about a threat it couldn’t fully understand.

’The System is a cheat. But reality has cheats too. And reality’s cheats are bigger than mine.’

His Essence hit forty. The regeneration continued.

The Ashen Wasteland was silent. The wind had died. The fused glass stretched to every horizon, flat and featureless. The sky above was grey with low clouds. No sun visible. No dimensional distortion. Just emptiness.

A good place to die, if it came to that. No collateral damage. No witnesses. Just a boy and the universe’s immune system, settling their disagreement in a field of glass.

He didn’t plan to die. He planned to win. But he estimated a forty percent chance of survival, and that number made his stomach tight.

His Essence hit sixty. One hour and twelve minutes since he’d sat down. The wind picked up again, carrying dust from the eastern edge of the Wasteland. The dust was fine glass powder, sparkling in the grey light.

He ran tactical scenarios. Physical combat against conceptual entities was meaningless. Severing Void Edge would pass through them. Abyssal Dissolution Domain would dissolve the space they occupied, but if they didn’t occupy space in the traditional sense, the Domain had nothing to dissolve. Void Step could reposition him, but repositioning didn’t help if he had nothing to attack.

Dissolution of Form was his only real weapon. Two uses. Maybe three if he regenerated enough Essence before the fight ended.

Three conceptual strikes. That was his entire arsenal against entities designed to erase anomalies.

’Not enough. Need more. Need to either increase my Essence or find a way to make each strike count.’

He checked his EXP Bank. 23,900,000. Enough to boost Essence significantly.

He allocated 10,000,000 EXP to Essence.

[DING!]

[EXP Allocation: 10,000,000.]
