Chapter 50: Chapter 50: The Hunter and The Hunted

Standing before the abandoned building in the middle of nowhere, Derrick was rethinking about his life choices.

He had thought about escaping after making some excuse but there was no getting out of Keira’s grasp.

She had dragged him down with bow and the gun.

What am I supposed to do with them? Why not just let me bring everything?

He could not help but groan in his heart.

He was very dissatisfied with Kiera but he did not voice out his objections.

"What are you moping about? Get ready, I am about to start." Seeing Derrick looking like he had just lost his loved ones, Keira shot him a disgusted look before walking towards the abandoned building.

"I will draw out the small colony of rat sewers hiding in the building."

The beast she was talking about was a huge rat like monster that appeared as tall as a human and it was capable of chewing through concrete itself.

"Although they are not as strong as an Awakened beast but their skin is tough enough to endure a bullet if you don’t aim for the right spot. It is the back of their head." Keira tossed him a small crumpled ball of paper which had all the information about the beast he needed.

"Read that. You have 5 minutes. Take a spot and once I signal you, the beasts will come charging out." Kiera shouted from the distance. "If you fail to kill every last one of them, you are facing me next."

"Why not just throw me in the rat’s nest and be done with it." Derrick muttered under his breath but he still read the information on the paper.

It took him a whole minute to read everything and memorize it.

He recalled the random mission notification he had gotten while fighting the mammoth and pulled the system again.

[Random Mission: The Mammoth’s Fall — Complete!]

[Objective: Defeat the Fire Tusk Mammoth Inside The Simulator Without Taking Much Damage.]

[Reward: 1 Enlightenment Pill — Claimed.]

He pulled up the item’s description, still buttoning his shirt one-handed.

[Enlightenment Pill: Consuming this pill temporarily increases the user’s learning capacity by 20x for the following hours of active training. Effects diminish once training ceases. Increases the chances of entering Deep Focus State ]

"Should I try this pill and see what effects will it have on my aiming skills?" Derrick did not think longer and turned his attention somewhere else.

The next task was...

I need to find a proper vantage point.

He looked around and found a perfect building, two stories high. It was not far from where he stood and the roof of the budding gave him a proper look of the area.

"Perfect place for me to use my sniper." Derrick glanced at the clock on his phone and ran to the building. The bow was tied to his back and the gun was tucked in his pants.

Once Derrick reached the building, instead of climbing like a normal person, he jumped as hard as he could and just like he had hoped, he reached the railing of the first floor easily and grabbed on to it.

Without pausing, he used the momentum to jump again and reach the second floor and then the roof.

The whole thing took him about two minutes.

"Hff!" Derrick took a deep breath and transformed the handgun into a semi automated sniper rifle and aimed at the wide open entrance of the building which Keira had walked inside.

He waited for five minutes to go by and just like she had promised, her signal arrived.

Boom!

The ground beneath the whole building collapsed, the shaking the foundation of the structure.

What a showoff.

Derrick clicked his tongue in annoyance and peered through the scope.

Within less than a few seconds of the explosions, a huge rat came running out of the building as if its life were in danger and it was.

Before Derrick could pull the trigger, a second rat came.

Then a third.

Just like that a whole army of around 25 rats came charging out of the building.

Click!

Woosh!

The rats paused when he realized the woman that had terrorized them was not following behind but it was their biggest mistake.

A rain of bullets tore through the air and one by one, thick sniper bullets came running down.

Most of them missed some of the beasts all together but a few made it through and struck their bodies.

"Screech!" Alarmed by the new threat, the rats tarted scattering around.

Seeing this, high up on the roof, Derrick panicked. "Shit."

He cursed his poor aim and summoned the pill from his inventory without hesitation and took it right away.

The effects were instantaneous, his nerves calmed down and he could think clearly once more.

He made a quick decision and started eliminating the rats who were rushing to take shelters first. The aim was wobbly at first but soon his hands stabilized and his breathing evened.

Pew!

Thwack!

One after another, shots started to land on the weak points of the beasts.

Just like that, he took out 10 of the rats within less than a minutes.

But by now, they had scattered in smaller groups, running into different building for protection.

Since he knew he could not chase after them instantly, Derrick had just focused on inuring all the rats at first while killing the once he could.

With the roads cleared out. Derrick jumped down directly from the roof and turned the gun into an AR.

His eyes turned flickered for a second as he awakened the ability he failed to use in Simulation.

All-Seeing Eyes!

Derrick followed the blood trail to keep the duration of his chase short and ran after the nearest rat.

Just like before instead of claiming stair, he jumped from floor to floor and once he was on the second floor, he slowly walked up to the stairway without making a noise and deactivated his eyes. He peeked and saw the two injured rats hiding in the stairs looking towards the lower floors, ready for ambush.

But...

Little did they knew.

They were the ones who were being ambushed.

Pew! Pew!
