“Thank you for clearing that up, Daoist Friend.”

“You just have to not think me shameless and despicable.”

Chen Changsheng said with a smile, “I don’t think discarding pride for the sake of an Immortal Sect is a laughable matter.”

The old man chuckled upon hearing this, then said, “I am Ban Cai. Dare I ask for my Daoist Friend’s name?”

Chen Changsheng cupped his hands. “I’m courtesy named Changsheng (Long Life).”

“A good name. May you achieve eternal life, Daoist Friend.”

“A misunderstanding, Daoist Friend. Though I’m named ‘Long Life,’ I yearn more for carefree leisure.”

“Then I wish you a life of untroubled ease in this world.”

“By your gracious words.”

The two men shared a laugh, and then Ban Cai saw Chen Changsheng off.

They descended the steps and walked all the way out of the mountain gate.

Chen Changsheng rose upon his sword, bidding farewell.

Ban Cai simply waved a hand. Then, a streak of sword-light flared up right before his eyes, vanishing in the blink of an eye.

“So fast?”

Ban Cai was stunned, taking a while to react.

It was long after Chen Changsheng and Patriarch Yun had departed.

He suddenly jolted. “Could it be… they came by Sword Flight…?”

He shook his head, finding it unlikely.

But the more he thought, the stranger it seemed.

‘Chen Changsheng…’

The name struck a faint chord of familiarity.

He’d have to ask someone about it later.

………

Patriarch Yun asked, “Mr. Chen, do we head for Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain next?”

Chen Changsheng nodded. “Perhaps we can find records of the remaining Ancient Scripts there.”

Patriarch Yun then pointed out the way.

The journey to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain wasn’t nearly as far as before. Mr. Chen’s Sword Flight brought them there within an hour.

What they saw was an Immortal Mountain towering into the clouds.

Birds flew amidst the peaks, insects chirped, and a vibrant Vegetal Essence permeated the lush plants and trees. Mist drifted through the mountain streams—truly a treasured paradise.

It was far more imposing than Yizhen Dao Mountain.

After all, Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain ranked highly within the Cultivation World.

“Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain lies ahead,” Patriarch Yun said.

They landed at the mountain’s base, on an open path within a forested expanse.

Many Cultivators came and went, their attire varied but their cultivation levels all seemingly low.

“So many people?”

Patriarch Yun paused, puzzled.

Chen Changsheng stepped forward, stopping someone. “Daoist Friend, are you a disciple of Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain?”

The person shook his head. “Not yet. Though I might be, later.”

Chen Changsheng paused. “I wanted to ask, what occasion is today, to draw such a crowd?”

“You don’t know?”

“I am newly arrived and not well-informed.”

“Today is the day Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain opens its gates to recruit new disciples.”

“I see. Thank you, Daoist Friend.”

Seeing this, Patriarch Yun remarked, “Mr. Chen, visiting today might prove problematic.”

Chen Changsheng said, “Let’s go up and see. If we can’t find someone to ask, then we’ll simply join the crowd.”

Patriarch Yun nodded. “Alright.”

The two followed the stream of Cultivators ascending the Immortal Mountain.

Halfway up the mountainside, Cultivators were stepping forward to register.

A long line formed; many people had arrived.

Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain differed from others. Most sects assessed talent and cultivation level, but Xuanjiu only required passing a trial to become a disciple. Opening its gates for recruitment every ten years, it drew tens of thousands of hopefuls, yet fewer than a hundred were ever accepted, a testament to the trial’s difficulty.

The Xuanjiu disciple handling registration glanced at the pair before him. “Name and cultivation level.”

Chen Changsheng said, “Daoist Friend, I am here to pay a visit to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain.”

The disciple paused at this. “Today is unfortunately rather busy. The entire mountain is occupied with the disciple trial recruitment. I doubt anyone is available for visitors. Might you return tomorrow?”

Chen Changsheng replied, “I have matters to inquire about and won’t take much time. If it is difficult, I could even join the trial seekers to avoid causing a delay.”

“This…”

The disciple hesitated briefly. “How about this? Could you temporarily take over duty registering the names for me? And please inform me of your name and place of Cultivation so I may report your visit.”

Chen Changsheng said, “I appreciate it, Daoist Friend. I am Chen Changsheng, previously Cultivating in the Mortal World.”

“Alright.”

Chen Changsheng took over the disciple’s task.

As people approached, he asked, “Name and cultivation level?”

He had to admit, he looked every bit the part.

Patriarch Yun murmured, “A great sect remains a great sect; they are far more courteous.”

Chen Changsheng said, “Stupidity like that of Qinle Palace is actually quite rare.”

“True words, Sir.”

He registered people one by one, quickly logging over a hundred individuals.

“Name and cultivation level?”

The person before him said, “Wang Yu. Golden Core realm.”

Hearing the name, Chen Changsheng paused and looked up.

When the young man named Wang Yu saw the face before him clearly, he too froze momentarily.

“Mr. Chen?”

Chen Changsheng asked, “What are you doing here?”

Wang Yu was stunned for a long moment before replying, “What is Mr. Chen doing here…?”

Chen Changsheng explained, “I came to visit the sect. The registering disciple went to report, so I temporarily filled in.”

Chen Changsheng looked at him and smiled. “Seems you’ve encountered some unique opportunities these past years.”

Wang Yu returned the smile. “Merely good fortune.”

Just then, the previous disciple hurried back down the mountain path, accompanied by another disciple.

“Mr. Chen!”

The first disciple caught his breath. “Mr. Chen, the Sect Master invites you up the mountain. This is Senior Brother Xiao. He will guide you.”

Senior Brother Xiao cupped his hands respectfully. “I am Xiao Dongxu, direct disciple of the Sect Master. Greetings, Mr. Chen.”

“Too polite, Daoist Friend,” Chen Changsheng replied.

Xiao Dongxu quickly said, “I wouldn’t presume. As a junior, it would be improper for you to address me as Daoist Friend.”

Chen Changsheng smiled. “Why mind such formalities?”

Xiao Dongxu smiled back; this Mr. Chen seemed much easier to get along with than rumored.

Chen Changsheng set down the brush and turned to Wang Yu. “Go on up quickly. We can catch up properly later.”

“Ah, yes,” Wang Yu replied. “Mr. Chen, take care.”

He watched, somewhat dazed, as Mr. Chen began the ascent with the others.

That Mr. Chen could have the Sect Master of Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain personally summon him… It suddenly dawned on Wang Yu that the Mr. Chen he thought he knew and the true Mr. Chen were worlds apart.

Senior Brother Xiao guided Chen Changsheng and Patriarch Yun further up the mountain.

He said, “We happened to coincide with the trial recruitment today, sir. We offer our apologies for the less than perfect welcome. Please do not take offense.”

Chen Changsheng responded, “There was nothing imperfect about it. If anything, it was my request that troubled you.”

“How could it be trouble? We are truly honored by your visit to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain, Mr. Chen.”

“You flatter me, Daoist Friend.”

“This way, sir.”
