The three combat squads were respectively led by Lucas, Felix, and Colonel Serfa, and they split up to operate independently immediately after landing.

Of the three squads, Felix had the least experience and knew little about this place.

But he had his own unique advantages, so he remained calm and wasn’t worried.

His many years as a scout hadn’t been for nothing.

Ordinary parasites were like stiff corpses being controlled and moved around. They weren’t difficult to deal with, and ordinary energy weapons could blast them apart without leaving even fragments behind.

Felix killed a beast-shaped parasite with his combat dagger. Even after losing its head, the parasite’s body continued moving.

Felix stepped on it and cut it open. The parasite’s body had been almost completely hollowed out. There was no flesh or blood inside, only densely packed grayish-white mycelium.

A squad member reminded him, “Colonel, parasite corpses have to be burned with energy weapons.”

“Mm.” Felix acknowledged him, withdrew the military boot pressing against the parasite, and took several steps back. He watched as the hollow corpse occupied by mycelium turned to ash beneath the energy flames.

They continued deeper into the forest.

In the dense woods, dead trees appeared every few steps, clusters of honey-colored mushrooms clinging to them and releasing spores into the air.

The squad members accompanying him casually destroyed the mushrooms as they passed.

Felix’s gaze instead settled on the gray-black trunks before shifting underground.

He could “see” the mycelium woven into a vast network, spreading outward with no end in sight.

Now he understood why the parasites on this planet could never be completely eradicated.

It was one enormous mushroom, so immense that its mycelium had spread throughout the entire continent, perhaps even throughout the entire planet.

Without intervention, it was only a matter of time before it devoured every living thing on the planet.

Felix looked through the mission information on his terminal and discovered that the military had already identified the existence of this mushroom and tried all sorts of methods, including but not limited to spraying chemical fungicides over enormous areas.

But nothing worked. The mycelium was spread too widely and buried too deeply to be completely killed. After some time, the mushrooms would simply grow back, and even more plants and animals would be parasitized and consumed.

Felix couldn’t think of any effective solution for the moment either.

That evening, the squad Felix led rendezvoused with Lucas’s team at the agreed location.

The military females rested where they were and began preparing dinner.

Freshly slaughtered beasts, freshly caught fish, and freshly picked mushrooms...

Felix was reporting to Lucas, but his gaze couldn’t help drifting toward the enormous pot of golden mushrooms, leaving him deeply shocked.

Female Zergs really would eat anything. Even the fruiting bodies of a mushroom that had practically parasitized an entire planet were perfectly acceptable food to them.

Lucas noticed where he was looking and explained,

“This kind of mushroom tastes pretty good. It’s fragrant and sweet. Although it has powerful parasitic capabilities and contains a certain amount of toxins, they’re nothing to an adult Female Zerg. It’s actually delicious.”

“What about Male Zergs and sub-females?” Felix asked instinctively.

Lucas paused slightly.

“No Zerg would feed something like this to a Male Zerg. As for sub-females... eating a small amount shouldn’t be a problem. Thorough cooking removes most of the toxins, so it shouldn’t have any effect.”

Felix compared the constitutions of Male Zergs and sub-females in his mind and arrived at an answer.

Felix touched his slightly hot face and sat on a rock by the river, letting the breeze cool him.

The military females had already begun setting up tents and collecting sleeping bags. They would spend the night in this forest before continuing their operation tomorrow.

After sitting in the breeze for a while, Felix also went to collect his sleeping bag.

Only to be informed that there weren’t enough sleeping bags and that two Zergs would have to share one.

Felix’s eyes widened in horror.

Two Zergs... sharing one?

He instinctively looked for Lucas.

Not far away, Lucas’s expression was even darker than his. When their eyes met, Lucas’s expression became even worse.

Felix had no idea who had angered him. Feeling somewhat intimidated, he didn’t dare go over and risk provoking him.

Just then, one of the military females from Felix’s squad finished setting up a tent and spreading out a sleeping bag, then called out and invited him over.

At that invitation, many gazes immediately turned toward them.

Felix was quite popular in the military.

After a month together, he had gradually integrated into Silver Fortress’s forces. He was beautiful and pleasing to the eye, gentle and courteous toward other Zergs, and comfortable to be around. Most Zergs were happy to spend time with him.

Felix assumed there was something the other Zerg needed his help with and was about to walk over when Lucas stopped him.

“You’ll share my sleeping bag,” Lucas said.

Felix was stunned.

Lucas grew irritated.

The sleeping-bag situation was something he had overlooked. The oversight was his fault to begin with.

There should originally have been enough, with plenty to spare. But he had temporarily allowed Felix to bring an additional squad along, and logistics hadn’t managed to coordinate everything properly, resulting in this mistake. Fortunately, Zerg military sleeping bags had plenty of room for expansion, so two Zergs could use one without any problem.

But Felix happened to like other Female Zergs.

Lucas’s expression darkened terribly.

Felix liked Female Zergs. Lucas obviously couldn’t let Felix squeeze into a sleeping bag with another military female.

Lucas spread out the sleeping bag and told Felix to get inside and try it.
