I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 28: A Wake Up Call
The dark glass of the Throne Room floor reflected the dim, violet twilight, cold and unbroken.
Raphael stood near the base of the marble dais, his chest rising and falling as he wiped sweat from his jaw. The micro-thin layer of mana had receded into his core, leaving behind a deep, aching hollow in his sternum.
Yet, despite his exhaustion, a smug grin tugged at the corner of his lips. He had held the Veil. He had dodged Vanessa’s projectiles. For the first time since this nightmare began, he felt like he was actually making progress.
"Not bad, right?" Raphael said, tossing a dismissive gesture toward the shattered rock by his boots. "I mean, considering some days ago I was getting thrown around by F-Tier vermin, I’d say I’m picking this up surprisingly fast. Give me another week with Elena’s footwork and your mana tricks, and that D-Tier boss won’t even see me coming."
Vanessa floated down from her pedestal. Her dark robes didn’t rustle, and her boots touched the black glass without producing a single sound. She didn’t look impressed or pleased. Her violet eyes were flat, distant, and icy.
"You speak as though this trial is an entertainment designed for your amusement," she said, her voice dropping into a register so quiet and cold that the ambient mana in the hall froze.
Raphael blinked, his lighthearted demeanor faltering for a fraction of a second before he tried to brush it off.
"Hey, I’m just trying to keep a positive attitude. You’re the one who told me I was soft, so I’m adapting. I’m taking your advice, using Elena to cover my physical weak spots, and practicing the Veil until my hands bleed. What more do you want? A thank-you speech?"
"I want a ruler," Vanessa snapped.
The sudden, razor-sharp edge in her tone hit the cavernous hall like a physical blow. The air pressure plummeted instantly. The purple veins pulsing through the giant obsidian pillars flickered wildly, and the heavy atmosphere crushed down on Raphael’s shoulders, forcing his knees to lock just to stay upright.
"You deflect every grim reality with a joke," Vanessa continued, stepping toward him with deliberate, predatory slowness.
"You treat the Bureau like a safety net, Elena like a friendly instructor in an academy, and this domain like a strange, lucid dream where you are the central actor protected by script and circumstance."
"I don’t think it’s a dream-"
"Silence!"
A wave of raw, oppressive pressure slammed into Raphael, cutting his breath short and locking his jaw shut. He couldn’t move a muscle. He could only stare into Vanessa’s piercing violet eyes as she stopped less than two feet away from him.
"Look at yourself," she commanded, her voice lashing him like a whip. "You lie to the Bureau operatives with a nervous smirk, hoping they will not look too closely. You treat Captain Vale’s suspicion as a minor inconvenience. You rely on an A-Tier mortal to shield you in combat, and when a boss monster targets your throat, you rely on pure, desperate luck with a severed wire to survive!"
She leaned in closer, her cold breath brushing his cheek.
"Do you truly believe a D-Tier dungeon will offer you a convenient electrical cable to step on? Do you believe the entities gathering in the dark beyond these walls will pause to admire your quick wit? You behave like a foolish, pampered child who thinks he can stumble through a war by making clever remarks and complaining about his bruises."
Raphael tried to open his mouth to argue, to counter that he was doing the best an unclassified civilian could possibly do, but the icy glare in her eyes choked the words in his throat.
"You were granted the Sovereign Anchor," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a harsh, unforgiving whisper.
"That means your life is no longer merely your own. If you die in that pit, this sanctuary crumbles. My existence vanishes. The power to command legions and forge a domain dissolves back into nothingness. Yet you treat your own mortality as a game where you get to retry after every mistake."
She raised her dark relic-staff and slammed its base against the floor.
The shockwave rattled Raphael’s teeth, and the oppressive weight crushing him lifted just enough for him to gasp for air. He stumbled back a step, clutching his aching chest, his face burning with a mixture of humiliation and sudden, sharp anger.
"I’m trying!" Raphael choked out, his voice hoarse. "I didn’t choose this system! I didn’t ask to have a thirty-day death clock hanging over my head!"
"Then die," Vanessa replied flatly.
Raphael froze.
"Die now and spare us the indignity of watching you get slaughtered by a dungeon beast," she said, her expression entirely devoid of mercy.
"Because a man who hides behind excuses, who treats his authority as a burden, and who refuses to wake up to the brutality of the world he has been thrust into is already dead. A Sovereign is not a hero in a tale, Raphael.
A Sovereign is a pillar. A Sovereign is steadfast when everything around him crumbles, and devious when survival demands it."
She stepped closer again, towering over him mentally even as her feet rested on the ground.
"Stop acting like a victim of circumstance," she demanded, her voice cutting through every defense he had built around himself over the past days. "Stop relying on the mercy of mortals and the convenience of chance.
If you must lie to the Bureau, lie with absolute conviction and purpose. If you must use Elena, manipulate her strength to build your own without losing control of the narrative. Calculate every breath, measure every risk, and accept that no one is coming to save you if you fall."
Raphael stood frozen in the dim twilight of the hall. The lingering impulse to make a sarcastic remark, to defend his pride, to point out the absurdity of his situation- it all withered and died under her gaze.
He looked down at his trembling, bruised hands. She was right. He had been treating this entire ordeal like an absurd event that happened to him, a bizarre scenario where he was just trying to survive until things went back to normal.
But there was no going back. The system wasn’t a game, the Bureau wasn’t his friend, and the countdown hovering in his vision was an absolute execution order if he failed.
The childish denial that had shielded his mind from the sheer terror of his new reality finally cracked and shattered.
Raphael swallowed the bile rising in his throat. He slowly raised his head, forcing his spine to straighten, his dark eyes locking onto Vanessa’s with a cold, quiet stillness that hadn’t been there a moment before.
"No more jokes," Raphael said, his voice flat, low, and stripped of all hesitation.
Vanessa studied his face, searching his eyes for any lingering trace of the civilian who had entered her domain three days ago. After a long, tense silence, the oppressive aura filling the hall slowly receded, pulling back into her form like a retreating tide.
"Good," she said softly, turning her back on him and floating toward her elevated pedestal. "Then let us begin your true education."
