I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 27: A Lesson in Steel
The air in Training Sector 4 was thick with the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and the heavy hum of mana-suppression fields.
Raphael stood in the center of the padded ring, his feet planted firmly in a low, balanced stance. Sweat poured down his temples, soaking the collar of his black compression shirt, but his breathing remained rhythmic and controlled.
Beneath his skin, buried deep beneath his flesh where no Bureau sensor could detect it, he held the subtle, icy thread of the Sovereign’s Veil.
Ten feet away, Elena rotated her wooden practice sword in a tight, hypnotizing figure-eight. Her striking blue eyes were locked onto his posture, sharp and analytical, searching for the slightest tell- a twitch of his shoulder, a shift in his weight, or a flare of panic.
"Day six, Raphael," Elena said, her voice cool and steady as she closed the distance with a slow, deliberate stride. "No excuses today. Show me you’ve actually been practicing."
Without another word, she exploded forward.
Her movement was a masterclass in Awakened combat. She didn’t use a flashy high-tier spell, but the sheer speed of her approach pushed a wave of displaced air ahead of her. Her wooden blade whistled through the air, executing a blinding horizontal sweep aimed straight for Raphael’s left flank.
In the past, Raphael’s mind would have gone blank with panic. He would have flinched, leaned backward, or frozen completely.
Now, guided by the heightened perception of his hidden Veil and the grueling footwork drills Elena had beaten into his muscle memory, the world seemed to slow down by a fraction of a second. He read the subtle drop of her left hip before the blade even reached midpoint.
Raphael didn’t retreat. He stepped into the angle of the attack.
CLACK!
Raphael brought his wooden shortsword up at a precise forty-five-degree angle, catching Elena’s blade near its hilt to redirect the force rather than taking the blow head-on. The impact vibrated up his arm, but the delicate layer of internal mana absorbing the shock kept his wrist solid.
Before Elena could reset her stance, Raphael pivoted on his lead foot, sweeping his back leg around to slip behind her shoulder, executing a fluid counter-thrust toward her exposed ribs.
Elena’s blue eyes widened in genuine, fleeting shock.
With the uncanny reflexes of an A-Tier operative, she twisted her torso mid-stride, bringing her sword down to block his counter by a hairsbreadth. Wood slammed against wood, sending a sharp crack echoing through the high-ceilinged bay.
The two of them locked blades for a long, frozen second, breathing heavily, their faces inches apart.
Elena stared at him, her bright blue eyes searching his face with an intensity that made his skin prickle. She looked at his feet, then at the steady, unyielding angle of his blade, before slowly disengaging and taking two steps back.
She lowered her weapon, letting out a low, slow whistle.
"Okay," Elena said, her voice dropping its usual lighthearted tease, replaced by a deep, intense curiosity. "What the hell was that?"
Raphael carefully brought his weapon back into a central guard, concealing his rapid breathing as he subtly relaxed the thread of his Veil. "What was what?"
"Don’t play dumb," Elena said, stepping closer and poking the tip of her wooden sword against his chest. "Six days ago, you couldn’t dodge a slow-moving practice droid. You were falling over your own feet and holding your weapon like a frying pan. Just now, you read my entry angle, deflected an A-Tier speed entry, and nearly took my flank."
Raphael swallowed hard, keeping his expression neutral. "You’re a good teacher. You told me to focus on spatial awareness instead of raw strength."
"Spatial awareness doesn’t give a civilian the reaction time to parry a strike moving at eighty miles an hour," Elena countered sharply. She narrowed her blue eyes, tilting her head as she studied him.
"There was no flare on the mana meters, but for a split second right before you pivoted, your movements didn’t look like a human trying to remember a drill. You moved like someone who’s been doing high-intensity sparring for hours every single night."
Raphael felt a cold drop of sweat trace down his spine. She was far too sharp. While he had been sparring for hours every night inside the dark glass hall of the Throne Room under Vanessa’s ruthless supervision, he couldn’t let Elena suspect he possessed a high-tier growth trait or an unmonitored domain.
"I’ve been practicing the footwork in my apartment," Raphael lied smoothly, forcing a self-deprecating smirk. "Unless you want me to get dragged out of another dungeon by my collar, I don’t really have a choice but to learn fast."
Elena held his gaze for a long, uncomfortable moment. The silence hung heavy in the training bay, punctuated only by the distant hum of the facility’s ventilation system.
Finally, the tension broke as a faint, sharp smile spread across her lips.
"You’re hiding something, Raphael," she said quietly, sheathing her practice sword in her belt loop. "I don’t know if it’s some weird passive awakening trait or if you’re just a closet prodigy, but nobody improves that fast on basic floor drills alone."
"Is that a compliment?" Raphael asked, lowering his weapon.
"It’s a warning," Elena replied, her blue eyes turning serious. "Captain Vale has been reviewing your physical telemetry logs from today’s entrance gate scans. If you keep showing this kind of explosive growth, the Bureau isn’t going to keep you in the civilian technical pool for much longer. They’ll reclassify you, and that means sending you into real, high-density hazard zones."
Raphael summoned his silvery-violet system interface with a silent command, letting the glowing text float just beyond Elena’s vision.
[SOVEREIGN QUEST ACTIVE]
- Time Remaining: 24 Days, 09 Hours, 43 Minutes.
’Reclassification is exactly what I need,’ Raphael thought, dismissing the screen. To reach a D-Tier gate within twenty-eight days, he couldn’t stay locked in an administrative office. He needed official operative clearance to step through high-tier portals.
"Let them reclassify me," Raphael said, looking Elena dead in the eye. "I’m not planning on staying in the back of the vehicle forever."
Elena stared at him, seemingly surprised by the cold, quiet confidence in his voice. She let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head as she picked up her water bottle from the bench.
"You’ve got a weird streak in you, Mr. Matthews," she said, taking a sip before flashing him a brilliant, challenging grin. "Alright then. Rest up. Tomorrow, we stop using wooden swords."
