I Start with a Mysterious Island
Chapter 660 - 410: Zhou Tongtong’s Face
Chapter 660: Chapter 410: Zhou Tongtong’s Face
The sky was bright and clear, without a single cloud in sight. A few small sparrows flew in from the distance.
They circled a few times over Ping’an District, then flew toward a large, leafy tree within the community.
"CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP..."
The sparrows on the tree chirped crisply and sweetly. Just then, a sound terrifying to them suddenly came from beneath the tree.
"MEOW..."
Beneath the large tree, two dozing stray cats grew irritated by the sparrows’ chirping. The Little Black Cat lifted its head and let out a threatening meow.
It was incredibly effective; the irritating chirps vanished at once.
The frightened sparrows fell silent and hopped a few times on the branch. Deciding it was far too dangerous to stay, they flapped their wings and flew to another large tree in the district, far from the two stray cats.
"Meow... They flew away," the Little White Cat said to its companion, watching the sparrows land on a distant tree in the greenbelt.
"Meow... Those things were so noisy. It’s better they left on their own. Saves me the trouble of chasing them off myself," said the Little Black Cat.
The two little fellows had no intention of catching sparrows for a meal now. They only used to hunt them when food was scarce.
Given the choice between sparrows and large rats, the two strays much preferred hunting rats. In terms of both size and flavor, a rat was far superior to a sparrow.
Ever since arriving in Ping’an Garden District and meeting Zhou Tongtong, the two stray cats had undergone a strange transformation. They were no longer what they used to be.
Now, the two little fellows could easily catch enough large rats to fill their bellies on their own. There was no need to hunt sparrows anymore.
The sparrows living in the large trees of Ping’an Garden District’s greenbelts no longer had to worry about being eaten by the two stray cats.
The Little Black Cat tore its gaze away from the sparrows in the distant tree. Just as it was about to close its eyes and doze off again, it saw Xia Qing approaching on her electric scooter from the community entrance.
"Meow... Little White, look over there! It’s Zhou Tongtong’s mom."
"Meow... I see. She’s calling us over!" said the Little White Cat, getting up from the grass. Seeing this, the Little Black Cat beside it rose as well.
Having bought a few things at the supermarket, Xia Qing rode her electric scooter back to the district and parked it in the bike shed.
After parking the scooter, as Xia Qing prepared to carry her bag of groceries home, she noticed the two stray cats in the greenbelt staring at her.
She thought for a moment, then raised her hand and beckoned to the two little fellows, signaling for them to come over.
She had often seen her daughter beckon just like that, and the two stray cats would always run over. ’If it works for my daughter, it should work for me, too,’ she thought, and so she gave it a try.
’Huh? Why are these two little fellows so hesitant?’
Xia Qing beckoned to the two stray cats and saw them stand up from the grass.
She expected them to run right over, but instead, they just stood there, watching her without moving. Their reaction was completely different from how they behaved when Zhou Tongtong called them.
"Meow... Zhou Tongtong’s mom wants us to go over. Should we?" the Little Black Cat asked its companion.
"Meow... Let’s go. She’s Zhou Tongtong’s mom; she shouldn’t hurt us," the Little White Cat said after a moment’s thought.
Then, before Xia Qing’s eyes, the two hesitant stray cats suddenly started forward, running quickly toward her.
"MEOW..." The two stray cats quickly ran out of the greenbelt and came to a stop before Xia Qing. They sat on the ground, tilting their heads up to look at her with wide, round eyes.
"..." Holding the large bag, Xia Qing stared silently at the two adorable little creatures before her.
She had heard from other residents that these two stray cats were extremely fierce. They’d warned her not to get close, or she might get scratched.
It was because of these reminders from other residents that Xia Qing always told her daughter to keep her distance when feeding the two stray cats.
But from what she had observed recently, the two strays weren’t nearly as fierce as people claimed.
At least, every time her daughter went out with a small bowl of food to feed the two strays, Xia Qing would watch the whole process from the balcony. She never saw the cats act aggressively toward her daughter. On the contrary, they were remarkably well-behaved, placidly letting her daughter pet them all over.
’Normally, stray cats shouldn’t be this good-tempered.’
’They were even gentler with her daughter than a typical housecat, which just didn’t make sense. And they were astonishingly smart, almost as if they could understand human speech.’
The woman and two cats stared at one another. Little Black and Little White tilted their heads, their eyes full of confusion. ’Zhou Tongtong’s mom called us over,’ they thought. ’We’re here now, so why is she just staring and not saying anything?’
"I bought some fresh lamb. Would you like some?" Xia Qing asked casually, mimicking the way her daughter spoke to them. As she spoke, she began to open the bag and rummage around for the meat she’d purchased.
