Veylan was a beast in bed.
I had always known it, somewhere in the back of my mind, even when he was at his most stoic, his most reserved. There was something coiled beneath his calm exterior, something primal and hungry that only emerged in the dark, only when the world fell away and there was nothing left but skin and breath and heat.
That week, he let it out completely.
There had been no gentleness, no tentative rediscovery. From the very first time, from the moment he had pinned me to the bed and entered me, Veylan had been unrestrained. The first day had been the same raw, desperate passion that had marked our reunion, the same relentless drive to claim and be claimed. By the second day, if anything, the intensity had deepened, and Veylan had become something else entirely. Something insatiable. Something that left me breathless, boneless, and deliciously sore.
He fucked me countless times. On the bed, against the wall, on the soft furs by the fire. He took me from behind, his hands gripping my hips, his cock pounding into me with a rhythm that made me scream his name until my voice went hoarse. He ate me out with a devotion that bordered on worship, his tongue working magic between my thighs, his groans of pleasure vibrating against my most sensitive places. And when I sucked him off, he watched me with those silver eyes, his hands tangled in my hair, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his control finally, beautifully breaking.
By the end of the week, I could barely walk. Every muscle ached. Every nerve ending sang with satisfied exhaustion. But it was the best kind of sore. The kind that reminded me with every step, every movement, every breath, of the pleasure Veylan had given me, the connection we had forged, the possible life we had created.
"You are trying to kill me," I told him on the seventh morning, sprawled across the bed like a landed fish, unable to summon the energy to move.
He laughed, the sound bright and unburdened in a way it rarely was. "You said you wanted to be thorough."
"I said you should be thorough. There is a difference."
He kissed my shoulder, my neck, the curve of my ear. "And now? Are you satisfied?"
"I am dead," I informed him. "You have fucked me to death. It is a good way to go."
He laughed again, and the sound was so beautiful, so free, that I had to smile despite my exhaustion. This was what he hid beneath the stoic exterior. This joy. This passion. This wild, unbridled love. And I was so grateful to have seen it, to have earned it, to have been the one to set it free.
But the week ended, as all weeks do, and I returned to the task at hand.
Motherhood.
My Pearlings have gotten better. Their swimming confident, their personalities emerging more with each passing day. They were beautiful, impossibly so, their azure hair and depthless eyes making them look like something from a dream, something ethereal and otherworldly. But they were also very much babies, with all the needs and demands that entailed.
And they were vocal. Figuratively, since they could not yet speak.
They told me what they liked. What they did not like. What was too cold, too warm, too bright, too loud. They told me when they wanted to be held, when they wanted to explore, when they wanted to sleep. Their mental voices were clear and distinct, each with their own personality, their own preferences, their own demands.
Seraphyna liked to be sung to. Kalisseyani preferred silence and stillness. Irysindra wanted constant physical contact, always reaching, always clinging, always needing to feel me near.
And Caelion, my sweet, devoted mate, loved every moment of it. He did not mind going to the surface or staying in the depths. He did not mind the endless feedings, the constant attention, the sacrifice of his own comfort for the needs of our daughters. He was born for this, born to be a father, born to love and protect and cherish.
But when Levy got sick, he wanted to be there for her too.
"Go," I told him, seeing the conflict in his sea glass eyes, the war between duty to our Pearlings and love for his first daughter through our bonding. "Go be with her. I have the girls. They will be fine."
"But you are tired," he protested. "The week with Veylan..."
"I am tired, not dead," I said, smiling. "And Levy needs you too. She is sick, and frightened, and she wants her all of her father you haven’t been to shore in a while, the kids miss you. Go. I will stay with our daughters. We will be here when you return."
He kissed me then, fierce and grateful, and surged toward the surface, toward the shore, toward the other children who needed him.
I stayed with my three Pearlings, holding them close, singing to Seraphyna, sitting in quiet stillness with Kalisseyani, letting Irysindra cling to me as much as she wanted. They sensed my mood, my exhaustion, my love, and they responded with their own quiet affection, their mental voices soft and soothing.
Mama tired, Irysindra observed, her small hand patting my cheek.
"Yes, my love," I admitted. "Mama is tired."
Mama happy?
I thought about it. About the week of passion with Veylan. About the possible child growing in my womb. About my daughter on the surface, surrounded by her fathers and siblings, being cared for and loved. About the family we had built, huge and chaotic and perfect.
"Yes," I said, my voice soft with wonder. "Mama is happy. So very happy."
It was such a blessed day.
To be surrounded by my mates. By my children. By the love we had created and continued to create, every day, every moment, every breath. The world outside was dangerous. Khemari still lurked, still watched, still planned. There were threats and challenges and battles yet to come. But today, here, in the warm waters of the lagoon, surrounded by my beautiful daughters, my devoted mates, my enormous, impossible family, I was at peace.
---
The peace of the afternoon was shattered by a development I had been dreading and anticipating in equal measure.
Atlas had an admirer.
She was pretty, this girl. Tall for her age, with honey-colored hair and warm brown eyes, perhaps fifteen in human form, clearly from one of the visiting tribes that had come to trade. She had been watching my son all day, following him with her gaze, gathering her courage with the slow determination of someone preparing for a great battle.
And now, finally, she had cornered him near the tide pools.
I was not the only one watching. Leon had abandoned his spear practice, Ravin had stopped mid-sentence, and Veylan, Soryn, Aureon, and Eryx except for Caelion of course, had all somehow found reasons to be nearby, their attention fixed on our oldest son with the intensity of hawks tracking prey.
"She is going to do it," Ravin murmured, his voice full of gleeful anticipation. "She is actually going to do it."
"Do what?" Jasper asked, appearing at my elbow with a mouthful of bread.
"Watch," Leon said, his eyes never leaving Atlas.
The girl approached my son, her hands twisting nervously in her tunic, her cheeks flushed with color. She was trembling, poor thing, clearly aware that she was being observed by seven of the most intimidating males on the island.
"Atlas," she said, her voice carrying on the breeze.
Atlas turned, his golden hair catching the light, his amber eyes curious. He was so handsome now, so tall, so confident, and completely, utterly oblivious to his own effect on females. "Yes?"
The girl swallowed hard, clearly struggling to find her words. "I... I have been watching you. For a while. And I think... I think you are wonderful. Kind. Strong. Handsome." She paused, gathering her courage, and then the words came out in a rush. "I want to be your mate. When you come of age. I want to bond with you."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Atlas blinked, his expression shifting from curiosity to surprise to something like panic. He glanced toward me, toward his fathers, as though seeking guidance, and then he looked back at the girl.
She was waiting, her eyes hopeful, her whole body leaning toward him as though drawn by an invisible string.
Atlas took a breath.
"I am honored," he said, his voice gentle, polite, carefully chosen. "Truly. You are lovely. Any male would be lucky to have you."
The girl’s face lit up.
"But" Atlas continued, and her face fell slightly, "I am not going to be getting a mate when I come of age."
The girl stared at him, confusion replacing hope. "What?"
"I want to explore first," Atlas explained, his voice warming with conviction. "I have watched my mothers and fathers, watched how they love each other, how they built their family. And I want that. I want what they have. But I also want to see the world first. To travel. To learn. To grow into myself before I bind myself to another."
He smiled, kind and gentle, and reached out to touch her shoulder. "So when I do choose a mate, I want to be certain. I want it to be right. Perfect. The way it should be. And until then, I want to be free."
The girl looked at him for a long moment, her expression cycling through disappointment, understanding, and finally, something like admiration.
"You are very wise," she said softly.
Atlas shrugged, his cheeks coloring slightly. "I have good teachers."
She nodded, managed a small smile, and walked away, her shoulders slightly slumped but her dignity intact.
And I was grinning so wide my face hurt.
"That’s right," I whispered, my heart swelling with pride. "That is my baby. You better wait until you find the right woman before you bond with anyone."
Leon was nodding, his expression fierce with approval. "He did well. Polite. Honest. Clear."
"He did not cave to the first female who showed interest," Ravin added, sounding almost smug. "That is rare at his age."
"He is ours," Veylan said simply. "Of course he is exceptional."
Atlas, apparently sensing he was being discussed, turned and walked toward us, his expression wary. "What?" he asked, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. "Why are you all looking at me like that?"
"Like what?" I asked innocently.
"Like you are proud of me," he said, suspicious. "It is unsettling."
"We are proud of you," I admitted, unable to contain my grin. "Very proud."
His face flushed, the color spreading from his neck to his hairline. "It was nothing. She was nice. I just... I do not want to rush."
"You handled it perfectly," I said, reaching up to ruffle his golden hair. He tried to duck away, but I caught him, and he suffered my affection with the long-suffering patience of a teenage boy who secretly loved it.
"Mom," he groaned.
"What?"
"Stop."
"Never."
He sighed, but I saw the smile he tried to hide.
And in that moment, surrounded by my family, watching my oldest son grow into a man with his own mind, his own standards, his own dreams, I felt something settle in my chest.
Pride. Yes. But also peace.
He was going to be fine. They all were. My children, my beautiful, growing, impossible children, were going to be fine.
And I would be here to watch every moment of it.
