Chapter 698: Chapter 698: Beware of Strange Children

Claire Sinclair looked back at him, her eyes filled with disappointment. "You don’t have to comfort me. I just feel bad for Faye, and I can’t even help her."

"I’m sorry," Adrian Quincy said in a low voice.

Claire Sinclair took a breath to compose herself and continued, "When Faye’s belly gets bigger, I don’t know how she’ll manage all on her own. And what about after she gives birth? How will she get through the postpartum period all by herself?"

Adrian Quincy had, of course, considered this problem as well, but hearing her voice it with such distress made his heart ache.

In the end, he relented, his tone softening. "I’ll do what I can to get him out early."

A smile finally returned to Claire Sinclair’s face. "You said it, so you have to keep your promise!"

Adrian Quincy gave a helpless smile, taking her small hand as they walked downstairs together. "I will. As long as you’re happy, I’ll do anything for you."

"In that case, how about you make me some dinner? I’m feeling a little hungry."

"What do you want to eat?"

"Um, I don’t have anything in mind."

"Then go wait in the living room. I’ll head out to buy some groceries."

"I want to go too!"

Adrian Quincy paused for a moment, then agreed.

The couple drove to a supermarket near their apartment complex and pushed a shopping cart to the produce section.

Claire Sinclair wasn’t very good at picking out produce, so she just tossed anything that looked fresh into the cart. In the blink of an eye, it was filled to the brim with vegetables.

Adrian Quincy followed behind her, quietly taking out vegetables they wouldn’t get around to eating or that she shouldn’t have, and putting them back on the shelves.

Claire Sinclair thought this was a fun game, so she started tossing everything into the cart just to have him pick out what they didn’t need...

Seeing her laugh with the pure joy of a child, Adrian Quincy felt like he had the whole world in his hands.

Suddenly, a few children came running up behind Claire, roughhousing as they went. They were shoving and dodging each other, and while one child wasn’t very strong, a whole group of them was enough to knock Claire off her feet.

"Hey, don’t play here! You might run into— AAH!" With a sudden cry, Claire felt a sharp tug on her clothes from behind. One of the children had yanked her back, causing her to stumble. Her center of gravity shifted, and she lost her balance, toppling backward.

The sight made Adrian Quincy’s heart leap into his throat. He lunged forward, ignoring the brats, and threw his arms around his wife to catch her. In his haste, he accidentally knocked over one of the children.

Thankfully, it was a close call, but no one was seriously hurt.

Adrian Quincy’s eyes narrowed, and his icy glare swept slowly over the children.

An intimidating chill seemed to freeze the air around them. Terrified by the look on his face, the children began to tremble before finally bursting into tears and running away.

Claire Sinclair straightened up, still shaken by the near-accident. Her heart was still pounding in her chest.

"Those kids were out of control. Running into brats like that is the worst..."

She was speaking to him, but her words trailed off when she saw that his expression was off. His eyes were fixed on something in the distance.

Claire Sinclair followed his gaze, but there was nothing there. She couldn’t help but ask, "Adrian, what are you looking at?"

Adrian Quincy lowered his gaze to meet hers and said in a heavy tone, "Claire, from now on, you need to be wary of children you don’t know. That group just now... they might have been acting on someone’s orders."

"What?" Claire Sinclair was stunned, and a wave of delayed fear washed over her.

Adrian Quincy wrapped an arm around her waist while pushing the cart with his other hand. "Let’s go home."

"Okay." The incident had completely ruined her mood for shopping.

After paying, the two of them headed home, their cart full.

Adrian Quincy made a point of cooking a lavish dinner for his wife and her best friend. After they ate, he left, not wanting to make things awkward for the two of them by staying.
