Chapter 680: Chapter 680: Return Gift

She checked the time. It was almost time for the appointment. Claire Sinclair took out her phone and sent him a text: Mr. Osborne, I’m very sorry, but something has come up and I can’t make it. However, I’ve had someone bring you a thank-you gift. Please accept it.

A moment later, she received a reply from an unknown number: I brought you a gift, too.

Huh?

Claire Sinclair immediately texted back: Why are you giving me a gift?

Unknown Number: No particular reason. I just wanted to.

Claire Sinclair: ...

A second later, another message suddenly arrived from the unknown number: Look up. At the security camera.

Claire Sinclair’s heart skipped a beat. She snapped her head up toward a nearby security camera. The realization hit her a moment later. ’This guy must have hacked into the newspaper’s surveillance system, and he’s definitely watching me right now!’

’What does that guy want?’

Claire Sinclair immediately texted him: What do you want?

Unknown Number: Nothing. Go on and do your thing.

Claire Sinclair glanced at the security camera one more time, then decided to ignore him. She put her phone down and started tidying her desk, preparing to go out for lunch.

-

After lunch, Landon Winston returned with a paper bag and handed it to Claire Sinclair. "Young Madam, the man asked me to give this to you."

Claire Sinclair took the paper bag and opened it. Inside was a box of cookies.

There was no label, nor any other markings.

’Could it be... he made these himself?’

Just as she was wondering, her phone suddenly buzzed with a new message.

Unknown Number: I promised you when we were kids I’d make you cookies. Give them a try. I just baked them.

Claire Sinclair stared at the fragrant cookies, a strange feeling stirring within her. She was afraid to eat them, but a part of her wanted to try one. For a moment, she was completely torn.

After a long moment, another message came from the unknown number: They’re not poisoned. They won’t affect your baby.

Claire Sinclair hesitated for a long time, then took out a cookie and cautiously took a bite.

’So delicious!’

Claire Sinclair glanced up at the security camera, then quickly looked down again. She picked up her phone to reply: I’ll just have a small bite. I’m not eating the rest.

Unknown Number: Alright.

Not wanting to waste any more words on him, Claire Sinclair put her phone away. She had Landon Winston take the bag, then went into the editor-in-chief’s office—which had been vacant for two weeks—to take a nap.

「Three days later」

Claire Sinclair and her husband received a wedding invitation from Lucas Rhodes. The couple was getting married at the end of the month.

The end of the month was still a long way off, and Claire Sinclair was getting anxious. She was afraid her belly would be noticeably big by then, and she wouldn’t be able to go out freely anymore. The more she dwelt on it, the more upset she became.

For some reason, she’d been restless these past few days and couldn’t concentrate on her work.

Henry Hartwell appeared out of nowhere and called out her name: "Claire Sinclair."

"Here!" Claire Sinclair snapped her head up. She frowned upon seeing Henry Hartwell’s handsome face, which had taken on a sharp, striking beauty after his dramatic weight loss. "Teacher Hartwell, you’re finally out of the hospital."

A roguish smile played on Henry Hartwell’s lips. "That man of yours was putting too much pressure on me. If I didn’t show up soon, he might have just demolished my house."

Claire Sinclair raised an eyebrow. "Why would he demolish your house?"

Henry Hartwell sighed helplessly as he recalled the phone call from The Great Demon King Quincy right before he came—

The Great Demon King Quincy had said, "Get yourself back there right now and clean up your own mess. Stop making Claire handle all these tedious tasks..."

Sigh...

Henry Hartwell sighed again. Instead of answering her, he just said, "Write up a leave request, bring it to my office, and I’ll approve you for paid time off."

Claire Sinclair: "..."

’Since when did I say I wanted to take time off?’
