Chapter 98: Chapter 96: Is the Title of the Lin Family’s Young Miss That Precious?
Outside the Shu family home.
Lin Yaodong waited for a full fifteen minutes before he saw Shu Yao emerge.
He complained impatiently, "What took you so long? Didn’t your mom tell you I was here?!"
’Making an elder wait this long... She must have left all her manners and upbringing back in the Lower Star District!’
Shu Yao opened the electronic gate and stepped out, asking aloofly, "What do you want?"
Lin Yaodong said, "There’s a decent bubble tea shop in the Fourth District. It’s my treat. We can talk."
Shu Yao hesitated for a moment, then decided to go with him.
If she avoided him now, Lin Yaodong would just come back to bother the Shu family later.
Might as well hear him out and get it over with.
It was just as the saying goes: The king of hell is easy to see, but the little demons are hard to shake.
The bubble tea shop.
Lin Yaodong immediately ordered two of their signature bubble teas. He said it was his treat, but he didn’t bother to ask Shu Yao what she wanted.
Shu Yao took a sip and almost choked on the liquid, which was so sweet it was bitter.
’How much sugar did they put in this?’
’They shouldn’t call this a bubble tea shop, they should just open a sugar factory!’
What she couldn’t understand was that the shop was actually doing booming business.
Seeing her glance around from the moment she sat down, as if she’d never seen anything like it, a mocking sneer appeared on Lin Yaodong’s lips.
He tapped his fingers on the table.
Shu Yao ignored him, using her Light Brain to place another order on the online platform.
Soon, a service robot delivered the unsweetened signature bubble tea and chocolate mousse she had ordered.
The unsweetened bubble tea was so bitter it made her question her life choices, and the chocolate mousse was as absurdly hard as a brick! ’Whoever can eat this must have teeth of steel!’
Tortured by these unpalatable items, Shu Yao lost her appetite completely.
Only when she had finally settled down did Lin Yaodong speak with a cold laugh. "Thanks to you, Xiangxiang is still in the hospital. And her uncle is now a social pariah who doesn’t even dare to leave his house."
"Everyone knows your daughter was hospitalized because she framed someone, sent them to prison, and was then attacked in revenge by that person’s child. As for your brother-in-law, he’s being flamed all over the internet because he has a terrible character." Shu Yao gave him a cool glance. "Don’t act like all your family’s troubles are my fault. I don’t have that kind of time."
Lin Yaodong’s face turned livid. "I say one thing, and you have ten retorts! Is this how your mother taught you to speak to your elders?!"
"And what kind of elder are you to me, exactly?" Shu Yao gave a detached smile. "Don’t you dare say you gave birth to me. My mother gave birth to me. I have nothing to do with you or the Lin family. Isn’t that what you wanted?"
"You!"
The Lin family, of course, couldn’t wait to sever all ties with this piece of trash from the Lower Star District. All along, they had assumed they held the upper hand in this matter. They *should* have been the ones in control.
To be forced into a passive position now felt utterly humiliating to Lin Yaodong.
"It’s good you’re aware of that!" Lin Yaodong suppressed his rage and stressed in a low voice, "I only have one daughter, and that’s Xiangxiang! She is the only young lady of the Lin family!"
Shu Yao picked at her ear.
’Is the title of "Young Lady of the Lin Family" supposed to be some great prize?’
She was thoroughly unimpressed.
Lin Yaodong got straight to the point. "Your existence is severely damaging my family’s reputation in the Upper Star District! I want you to go back to where you came from!"
Finally regaining the upper hand, his mood brightened. His gloomy expression relaxed, and his voice became a little lighter.
"The Shu family has some prestige in the Fourth District. But your existence is a stain on them, too. If you truly care about your mother and uncles, you’ll distance yourself from the Shu family as soon as possible.
"You probably don’t know this, but you’ve put your eldest uncle in a very difficult position. Everywhere he goes, people mock him for having a niece and a grand-nephew taken in from a Lower Star District garbage heap. With a stain like that on his family’s background, it’ll be very hard for him to get promoted in the future."
’Promotion?’
’Why would he want to crawl his way up the ladder like a dog?’
Her eldest uncle was very shrewd; he understood the principle of "better to be the head of a chicken than the tail of a phoenix," which was why he had turned down many opportunities for promotion. Now, the Shu family’s position in the Fourth District was so solid that not even the Imperial Family would dare to challenge it!
A pity Lin Yaodong understood none of this.
"I heard you’ve enrolled at Imperial High, the same school and grade as Xiangxiang," Lin Yaodong reprimanded. "Are you trying to cause trouble?! The unified examination is in less than two months. You never went to school in the Lower Star District, so what score could you possibly get? What university will accept you with a score like that? You’ll be a complete embarrassment to me and your mother!"
He grew angrier as he spoke, but not wanting to waste any more energy on it, he composed himself and adopted the air of someone bestowing a great charity.
"I’ll give you money. Take your son and go back to the Lower Star District. Three million Star Coins. That’s enough for you and your son to live on for the rest of your lives there. You won’t have to take the unified examination, either."
Shu Yao gave a faint, mocking smile. "Mr. Lin, I heard from my eldest uncle that you used to be from the Lower Star District, too."
Lin Yaodong’s expression darkened instantly. "Are you trying to compare yourself to me?"
’As if she were worthy.’
Shu Yao continued, "When my mother was with you, he was vehemently against it. He saw from the start that you were more desperate than anyone to climb the social ladder, and that you were only with my mother to use the Shu family’s connections."
And as it turned out, her eldest uncle’s judgment of character was flawless.
Shu Yao sneered. "What, you think you’re rich enough now to play the great philanthropist? If you don’t have a charitable heart, then don’t pretend you do. As for your pathetic little sum of Star Coins, you should save it for your daughter’s dowry."
Lin Yaodong gritted his teeth. "Go back to the Lower Star District, and you and your son can still live a peaceful life!"
"Are you threatening me?" Shu Yao’s smile vanished, her expression turning frigid. "Then bring it on. I’ll show you the difference between Zone 9 and the Lower Star District!"
Lin Yaodong growled, "Shu Yao, don’t push me too far!"
"Lin Yaodong, your little tricks might work on a sweet, naive woman like my mother," Shu Yao said coldly. "The only reason I’ve let you and that woman with the surname Zhen do as you please is because I don’t want to see her get hurt."
A look of panic crossed Lin Yaodong’s face, and he found he didn’t dare meet her eyes. "What... what do you mean by that?!"
"Remember this: I can reopen my old missing person case at any time." Shu Yao’s slow words were laced with a chilling air. "If you and that Zhen woman don’t want to spend the rest of your lives in an interstellar prison, then I suggest you stop coming to the Shu family home to cause trouble!"
The assertive front Lin Yaodong had put up crumbled. Flustered and helpless, his composure was shattered, and for a moment, he didn’t know what expression to wear in front of Shu Yao.
"How peacefully the Lin family gets to live depends entirely on how long you can keep all your filthy, disgusting secrets from my mother," Shu Yao warned coldly. "And don’t even think about doing anything to harm her. If anything happens to her, I’ll make your entire Lin family pay with their lives!"
A chill ran through Lin Yaodong, as if he’d been plunged into an icy cellar. He slumped in his seat, looking as if his soul had left his body.
Shu Yao stood up. "From now on, when you see her, stay far away. And if you can’t, or won’t, then you’d better tuck your tail between your legs and speak to her with respect."
Lin Yaodong’s face was pale. He dazedly lifted his panicked, bewildered eyes to look at the calm and composed young woman. His dry lips moved, but not a single word came out.
