I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster

Chapter 224: Eclipse-Sun Sword

The camp was made up of two tents and a fire.

They had set up on the hilltop, three miles from the ruins, far enough that the dust from the collapsed skyscraper couldn’t reach them.

Cora and Sera had taken the first tent. Their discipline was absolute. Within minutes of making camp, they had set up a rotating watch, eaten their field rations, and settled down to rest. Their bodies recovered while their senses remained sharp enough to notice anything unusual around them.

Holden sat inside the second tent with the flap closed.

His focus was on the Diamond Chest.

It sat on the ground in front of him. The prismatic glow that had once surrounded it had faded after several hours in his Inventory, leaving behind a steady, manageable light.

Holden reached out and pressed his thumb against the seal.

The chest opened like a flower. Six crystal sections folded outward, each one catching the firelight and throwing it back in a different color. The inside of the chest glowed with a strange light that wasn’t simply white, silver, or gold. It carried every color at once.

Inside was a hammer.

[Item Acquired: Rank 4 Aether-Smithing Hammer]

[Type: One-Time Upgrade Tool]

[Rank: 4]

[Effect: Permanently upgrades any Rank 3 weapon to Rank 4. The upgrade process fuses the target weapon with a compatible energy source, creating a new, evolved weapon that inherits the properties of both components.]

[Usage: Place the target weapon and a compatible energy source on a flat surface. Strike the energy source with the hammer. The hammer will channel System energy to fuse the components permanently.]

[Limitation: One use only. The hammer is consumed in the process.]

[Description: A forge tool from the Ancient Era, designed by master smiths who understood that the strongest weapons are not forged from a single material. They are born from the fusion of opposites. Light and dark. Fire and shadow.]

Holden lifted the hammer from the chest.

It was heavy, but not in the usual sense. His 7-Star body could lift a car without much effort. The weight came from the energy inside the hammer. A deep vibration ran through its handle, humming with concentrated System power that he could feel in his bones and meridians.

It was a one-time-use tool.

He set the hammer beside him and reached into his Inventory.

The Solar-Forged Sword appeared in his hand, warm and familiar. He had carried the weapon since the National Tournament. It had killed the Titan in the Abyssal Rift, slain the Abyssal General, and helped bring down the Warmaster.

It was Rank 3, and it had served him well. But the enemies he was facing now were Rank 4. A Rank 3 weapon could struggle against a Rank 4 aura, no matter how skilled its wielder was. Against Vandiba, Holden had overcome that gap through traps, terrain, and strategy. In a direct clash, however, the sword’s Rank 3 edge would not be enough.

The second item was a core.

It was Lord Vandiba’s energy core, extracted by the System after his defeat. Unlike a monster core, this one contained the concentrated essence of a Rank 4, 1-Star cultivator. The System had condensed Vandiba’s remaining power into a physical form.

Shadow-poison energy swirled inside the core. It was dark and almost alive, giving off a faint purple glow. It was the complete opposite of the Solar-Forged Sword’s golden fire. The sword represented light and heat. The core carried darkness and cold.

Sun and shadow.

Fire and poison.

Opposites.

The hammer’s description had been clear. The strongest weapons were born from the fusion of opposing forces.

Holden placed the Solar-Forged Sword on the ground in front of him and set Vandiba’s core beside it. The air between them seemed to tighten under the pressure.

He picked up the hammer.

"System, confirm fusion compatibility."

The interface appeared.

[Compatibility Analysis:]

[Target Weapon: Solar-Forged Sword (Rank 3)]

[Energy Source: Lord Vandiba’s Shadow-Poison Core (Rank 4, 1-Star)]

[Compatibility: 94%]

[Fusion Type: Oppositional Synthesis]

[Expected Result: Rank 4 Dual-Element Weapon]

[Warning: Oppositional synthesis produces volatile energy interactions. The resulting weapon will exhibit dual-element behavior. Fire and shadow. Light and dark. The weapon will be powerful but unpredictable.]

[Proceed with fusion? Y/N]

Ninety-four percent compatibility.

There was a six percent chance the fusion would fail. The two components could simply reject each other, wasting the hammer’s only use.

Holden studied the numbers.

The risk was concentrated in the first 0.3 seconds, when the hammer’s energy made contact with the two opposing materials. If the contact angle was correct, the failure chance dropped below one percent.

His processor could calculate the angle.

"Confirm."

Holden raised the hammer.

The 10,000x processor calculated the swing, the angle, the force, and the point of impact. He didn’t need to think about any of it. The calculations were already complete.

He swung.

CLANG!

The hammer struck the shadow-poison core.

Energy exploded from the hammer and engulfed both the core and the sword in a sphere of blinding, prismatic light.

FWOOOOM!

Every color flashed at once.

The tent fabric became almost transparent. The fire outside went out. Even the forest seemed to hold its breath. Birds stopped calling. Insects went silent.

The core cracked.

The shadow-poison inside didn’t spill out. It surged forward instead, pouring from the broken shell like thick smoke. Dark energy twisted through the air and rushed toward the Solar-Forged Sword as though desperately searching for somewhere to settle.

The sword absorbed it.

Golden steel drank in the shadow-poison. The blade began to change almost immediately. Its warm color darkened, black and gold patterns spreading along the steel.

The hammer began to dissolve.

Its one remaining charge had been spent. The metal broke apart into tiny particles that floated through the air before disappearing.

Tssss.

Tssss.

The light slowly faded.

The tent became opaque again. Outside, the fire reignited as the embers flared back to life.

Holden looked at the sword.

It was beautiful.

The golden blade was gone. In its place was black and crimson steel, the two colors flowing together in constantly shifting patterns. Black fire and crimson fire seemed to exist together along the blade without one consuming the other.

The hilt had changed too. The old leather wrapping had disappeared, replaced by dark metal that felt warm against his hand. The warmth was familiar, but deeper than before, as though the heat came from somewhere inside the weapon.

Holden picked it up.

The difference wasn’t physical weight. The change came from the energy inside it. The old Solar-Forged Sword had carried Rank 3 power. This new blade carried Rank 4 energy.

It felt less like holding a weapon and more like holding a source of power.

The sword almost seemed eager to move in his hand.

[Weapon Evolution Complete!]

[Solar-Forged Sword + Lord Vandiba’s Shadow-Poison Core]

[New Weapon: Rank 4 Eclipse-Sun Sword]

[Type: Dual-Element Greatsword]

[Rank: 4]

[Element 1: Solar Fire (Inherited from Solar-Forged Sword). White-hot crimson flame. Perfect-tier Hellfire Cleave compatible.]

[Element 2: Shadow-Poison (Inherited from Vandiba’s Core). Corrosive dark energy. Capable of eroding Rank 4 defensive auras on sustained contact.]

[Passive: Eclipse Resonance. When both elements are activated simultaneously, the weapon generates an Eclipse Field. A 10-meter radius zone where light and shadow cancel each other out, creating a zone of absolute darkness that blinds all enemies within range.]

[Description: A weapon born from the fusion of opposites. The Eclipse-Sun Sword burns with the fire of the sun and the shadow of the eclipse. It is light and dark, creation and destruction, the beginning and the end. It was forged to kill gods.]

Holden held the weapon in front of him. A low hum ran through the blade and into his hand, then up his arm and into his chest.

He swung it once just to test it.

FWIP.

The air split cleanly. A thin black-crimson line remained in the air for less than a second before fading away.

The sword was faster than the old blade. The Rank 4 energy inside it made the weapon more responsive, moving almost as naturally as his own body. The Solar-Forged Sword had once felt like an extension of his arm.

The Eclipse-Sun Sword felt like an extension of his will.

"Good sword," Holden said.

He ignited it.

The flames were different.

Instead of the white-hot crimson fire of Hellfire Cleave, black flames crawled across the steel like living shadows. Crimson streaks ran through the darkness, pulsing like veins of light. The two elements twisted together, creating something both beautiful and dangerous.

FWOOM.

The tent flap blew open.

The fire outside guttered as the temperature around the camp dropped. The sword’s energy pressed against the air, making the entire camp feel strangely heavy.

Holden extinguished the blade.

The flames vanished, leaving the black and crimson steel behind.

He returned the Eclipse-Sun Sword to his Inventory.

His earpiece crackled.

"Holden."

Maeve’s voice came through, clear and calm. The Supreme Tactician was speaking from her station in the Capital.

"I’ve decrypted the second entry in Vespera’s journal."

"Go ahead."

"The target is Lady Serith. Rank 4, 2-Star. Specialty: illusion and mind manipulation."

Holden’s attention sharpened.

Illusion. Mind manipulation.

That wasn’t a straightforward fighter. Serith could attack perception itself, making it difficult to know what was real and what wasn’t.

"Location?"

"That’s where it gets complicated." Maeve paused. "She doesn’t have a fixed base. She has a floating one. The Gilded Lily. It’s a casino city built on a massive artificial island on Lake Sereth, three hundred miles west of the Capital."

"A floating casino?"

"A huge black-market casino city. It floats on enchanted pontoons and moves every few weeks to avoid military patrols. Crime lords, corrupt nobles, smugglers, and wealthy criminals all use it as a safe haven. But the casino is only the surface."

Maeve’s voice hardened.

"Underneath, it’s a slave market. Serith uses mind-control techniques to enslave patrons and staff. Anyone she doesn’t sell becomes a human shield."

Holden’s expression tightened.

Innocent civilians. Brainwashed slaves. A floating city filled with people who couldn’t simply walk away.

"We can’t use brute force."

"No. The casino has an estimated civilian population of three thousand, along with roughly two hundred Rank 2 enforcers. Then there’s Serith herself. If you attack openly, the casualties will be massive, and she’ll use her slaves as shields."

"What’s our way in?"

"The casino operates by invitation. High rollers only. You either need a referral from an existing patron or you pay a minimum entry fee of five hundred thousand credits."

"Five hundred thousand?"

"I have access to the funds you recovered from the Crimson Syndicate. The account is in your name. You have more than enough."

Holden leaned back.

His processor was already working through the possibilities. This wasn’t going to be another battle where he simply overwhelmed an enemy with strength. If Serith was hiding inside a city full of civilians, he needed to reach her without giving her a reason to panic.

"How do we get to Serith?"

"She operates from the top floor. Private suite. Access is by personal invitation only. She doesn’t meet with patrons unless they’ve proven themselves worth her attention."

"Worth her attention how?"

"By winning. The high-stakes tables are the filter. Gamblers who win consistently attract attention. Gamblers who win impossibly attract Serith."

A small smile appeared on Holden’s face.

"Gamblers who win impossibly," he repeated. "What’s the house edge?"

"About twelve percent. The games are rigged. Card counting is theoretically possible, but the dealers use enchanted decks that reshuffle after every hand."

"Every hand?"

"Yes. The shuffle pattern is controlled by a Rank 2 enchantment. It’s designed to be unpredictable."

"Designed by whom?"

"A Rank 2 enchanter. Standard casino-grade work."

Holden considered that for a moment.

"Then I’ll just have to find another way to win."

"Another way?"

"I don’t need to predict the cards if I can predict the people dealing them."

Maeve was silent for a moment.

"You’re planning to read the dealers?"

"The dealers, the players, the table. People give away more than they realize. A twitch, a pause, the way someone looks at their cards. Little things."

"You think you can read enough to beat an enchanted deck?"

"I think I can win enough to get noticed."

Maeve paused.

"That’s a very confident answer."

Holden smiled.

"Confidence is part of the disguise."

"You’re going to gamble against a casino full of criminals and nobles while pretending to be a spoiled rich kid?"

"That’s the plan."

"And you think they’ll believe it?"

"They don’t have to believe I’m stupid. They just have to believe I’m rich enough not to care about losing."

Maeve let out a quiet sigh.

"Fine. I’ll arrange everything. Just try not to bankrupt the entire casino before you get to Serith."

"No promises."

Holden stood.

He opened his Inventory and pulled out an item he hadn’t used since the Royal Gala.

The tailored suit.

Dark, expensive, and perfectly fitted. The System had preserved it exactly as he had stored it.

Holden held it up and checked it over.

Perfect.

His eyes moved toward the tent flap. Cora and Sera were still resting in their tent. Outside, the clouds were beginning to break, revealing the first stars of the evening.

"Maeve."

"Yes?"

"Book three tickets to the Gilded Lily. Use a false identity. Wealthy young heir with two personal bodyguards."

"Which name?"

Holden thought for a moment.

There were plenty of options, but he needed a name that would fit the role without attracting too much attention.

"Voss," he said. "Aldric Voss. Distant relation of the Sterling family. Old money. New face."

Maeve was silent for a moment.

"Sterling is dead. The name is radioactive."

"Exactly. Anyone who recognizes the connection will assume I’m some desperate relative trying to trade on a dead name. The kind of arrogant, spoiled rich kid who would walk into a casino and throw money around because he has nothing better to do."

"And the Twins?"

"My bodyguards."

Holden held the suit against himself.

"We’re going to play a high-stakes game of espionage," he said. "And before I even meet Lady Serith, I’m going to make sure everyone at that table knows my name."

He folded the suit over his arm and stepped outside.

The night air was cold and clean. Oakhaven was only a dark smudge on the horizon now, marked by the faint glow of dying fires among the rubble.

Cora and Sera were already awake. They stood outside their tent, watching Holden with alert, questioning expressions.

"Gear up," Holden said.

The Twins straightened.

"Where are we going?"

Holden looked toward the distant horizon.

"We’re going to a casino."
