I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster
Chapter 223: The Assassin’s Inheritance
The dust took three hours to settle.
Holden stood on the hilltop and watched it fall. Layer by layer, the grey cloud that had risen from the collapsed skyscraper sank back to earth, covering the ruins of Oakhaven like a funeral shroud. The rain helped, catching the dust particles and pulling them down, slowly washing the air clean.
When the air finally cleared, the city was unrecognizable.
The northern quarter, where the skyscraper had once stood, was gone. In its place was a massive crater, two hundred feet wide and fifty feet deep, filled with rubble. Huge concrete slabs lay among twisted steel beams, shattered glass, dust, and ash. The remains of the hundred-story building had been compressed into a pile that rose sixty feet above the surrounding ruins.
The building had fallen almost straight down instead of collapsing outward, leaving most of the surrounding blocks untouched. A few walls had collapsed, and several windows were shattered, but the destruction had remained almost perfectly contained.
Almost.
At the center of the crater, buried beneath the deepest part of the rubble, Holden’s 10,000x processor detected an energy signature.
Faint. Flickering. Like a candle struggling to stay lit in the middle of a hurricane.
Lord Vandiba was alive.
His processor ran the analysis. The energy signature was consistent with a Rank 4 cultivator whose defensive aura had been severely compromised. The sphere of dark energy that had absorbed his Hellfire strikes and shrugged off his explosive charges had cracked under the weight of forty thousand tons of falling skyscraper. The shell was broken, leaving only the raw energy of a Rank 4 cultivator who had been crushed beneath a building.
The processor mapped the rubble pile and estimated the target was buried approximately thirty feet below the surface. The debris above Vandiba had been compressed to roughly twice the density of the original building material, leaving about twelve hundred tons of weight pressing down on him.
A Rank 4 cultivator could survive twelve hundred tons of pressure. Barely. Enhanced bones, densened muscles, and reinforced organs gave their bodies the strength to withstand extreme conditions. But not forever. And not without a cost.
Vandiba’s legs were crushed. The processor couldn’t confirm it directly, but the energy pattern was consistent with severe internal damage. His Rank 4 body was trying to regenerate, but the regeneration was losing the battle against the pressure. Every time damaged tissue rebuilt itself, the weight crushed it again.
Vandiba was dying. Slowly. Alone.
Holden turned toward the Twins.
"Stay here."
"Master Voss," Cora said, "the target is Rank 4. Even injured and trapped, a Rank 4 cultivator is—"
"Stay here."
The words were flat and final.
Cora closed her mouth.
Sera gave a small nod.
Holden walked down the hill.
The grass gave way to mud, and the mud soon disappeared beneath concrete dust and broken stone. He picked his way through the ruins as the 10,000x processor mapped a path through the debris toward the crater.
The slope was steep. Rubble shifted beneath his boots as he descended, sending small avalanches of concrete fragments and steel shards sliding down behind him. The Ember-Silk Cloak kept his body temperature steady against the cold, wet air, while the Blood-Amber Ring quietly healed the small cuts left by the sharp edges of the broken steel.
He reached the bottom and stopped at the deepest point of the crater. This was where the building had struck hardest, where the pressure had been greatest, driving the rubble deep into the earth.
The energy signature was directly below him.
He started digging.
Aether-Steel fingers tore through the rubble with ease. Concrete slabs were lifted and thrown aside. Steel beams were bent or broken. Glass was swept away. His 7-Star body moved tons of debris with each motion, muscles working at full output while the Star Core Elixir’s doubled recovery kept his energy flowing.
Ten feet down. Twenty. Twenty-five.
At thirty feet, he found him.
Lord Vandiba lay inside a pocket of space created by two massive steel beams. They had fallen in an inverted V, forming a triangular shelter that had stopped the rubble above from crushing him completely. Without that small pocket, the weight would have flattened him against the earth.
He was alive. Barely.
The dark suit was gone, shredded by the collapse, leaving only pieces of the shirt and trousers clinging to his body. His face was badly bruised and covered in cuts. The grey-green tint that had once colored his skin was gone, replaced by a pale, sickly white. His cheekbones stood out sharply, while dark hollows surrounded his eyes.
His legs looked wrong. Crushed. The steel beam that had formed the shelter had also fallen across his lower body, pinning him to the ground. Eighteen inches wide and solid steel, it had driven his legs into the ground, crushing the bones and flattening the flesh beneath his waist.
His Rank 4 aura was gone. The dark energy that had once surrounded him like a second skin, the same defensive sphere that had shrugged off Hellfire and explosions, had completely disappeared. What remained was the raw body of a man who had survived forty thousand tons of falling rubble and was now being held together by nothing more than Rank 4 resilience.
Vandiba looked up at Holden.
He looked like a man who already knew he was staring at the last thing he would ever see.
A cough shook his body.
Blood spilled from his mouth, dark and thick.
"You," Vandiba rasped. His voice had lost the smoothness it once carried. "You dropped a building on me."
"A hundred-story building. On a Rank 4 cultivator." Another cough brought up more blood. "That’s not how fights are supposed to work."
"I don’t follow the rules."
"No." A weak sound escaped him, almost a laugh. "No, you don’t."
Vandiba turned his head slightly, keeping his eyes on Holden.
"You fight just like she did," he whispered. "Vespera. She never fought fair either. She used the environment, the battlefield itself. She didn’t overpower her enemies. She outmaneuvered them."
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"She would’ve been proud of you."
Holden stared down at him. At the broken man buried beneath the ruins of his own city. At the Eclipse Syndicate operative who had helped engineer a war and killed his mentor.
"You killed Vespera."
Vandiba’s eyes flickered.
"Not directly. The Abyss took her." He paused to catch his breath. "But yes. We opened the door. We set the stage. She walked into it, and she died."
"Why?"
"Because she was in the way." His voice grew weaker with every word. "The Syndicate has been working for thirty years. Vespera was the only one who knew the truth. The only one close enough to stop us. She had to be removed."
"She was your colleague. Your fellow cultivator. She defended the kingdom you swore to protect."
A thin smile appeared on Vandiba’s cracked lips. Bitter and broken.
"The kingdom is a lie, boy. The Syndicate doesn’t want to destroy the world. We want to remake it. Vespera stood in our way. So did the Emperor, and so does anyone who clings to the old structures."
His eyes began to lose their focus. The light inside them was fading, not because of the conversation but because his body was failing.
"The Syndicate will come for you next," Vandiba whispered. "You’re Vespera’s disciple. Her legacy. Her technique. Her method. Everything she knew, you carry. They won’t allow that to survive."
Holden looked at the dying man who had threatened his mentor, hunted her disciples, and helped engineer the war that had taken her life.
"The Syndicate is my prey now."
He summoned his sword.
The Solar-Forged blade slowly appeared in his hand in golden light.
There was no fire around the blade. Just a sword held in one hand, its edge aimed at Vandiba’s neck.
Vandiba stared at the silver steel, then at Holden’s face. The black eyes. The lack of hesitation.
"Vespera’s disciple," he whispered. "Her final student. Her final blade."
His eyes slowly closed.
"She chose well."
Holden swung.
Shhhk.
The Solar-Forged Sword passed cleanly through Vandiba’s neck. His head separated from his body, and the corpse went still.
The System chimed.
DING!
[Lord Vandiba (Rank 4, 1-Star) Defeated!]
[Rank 4 Warlord Eliminated]
[+100,000 KP!]
[2x KP Booster Active! KP Doubled!]
[+200,000 KP!]
One hundred thousand points. For a single Rank 4 kill. It was the largest single-target reward he had ever received.
A glow appeared.
Not platinum. Not gold. Not silver.
Diamond.
Light erupted from Vandiba’s dissolving body. The Diamond Chest appeared above the ashes, hovering and spinning.
Holden willed the chest into his System Inventory, and the glow vanished with it.
[Diamond Chest Acquired!]
[Stored in System Inventory.]
He climbed out of the hole.
The shadow-poison cloud was gone, dispersed by the collapse and scattered by the shockwave. For the first time in decades, the air over the ruins of Oakhaven was clear.
Holden walked out of the crater, up the slope, and through the rubble. He crossed the ruined city until he reached the hill where the Twins were waiting.
Cora and Sera stood together on the hilltop. They had watched him walk into the crater. They had seen him dig through thirty feet of rubble.
Their eyes stayed on him as he approached.
"Master Voss," Cora said. "Is it done?"
"It’s done."
"Lord Vandiba is dead?"
"Yes."
The Twins exchanged a look. It lasted only two seconds, but it carried the weight of twenty years. Two orphans raised by a woman who had prepared them for her own death. A woman who had sealed a box in blood and told them to deliver it to a boy they had never met. A woman who had trusted that boy to finish what she had started.
Their eyes moved toward the ruins of Oakhaven. Toward the crater where a skyscraper had fallen on a Rank 4 cultivator. Toward the dust still settling over the grave of the man who had helped kill their master.
Then they looked back at Holden.
He hadn’t defeated Vandiba with overwhelming strength. He had used traps, shadows, and the city itself.
He had outsmarted a Rank 4 cultivator. He had turned the city into a weapon and the weapon into a grave. He had done what Vespera had spent fifteen years trying to accomplish, and he had done it in a single afternoon.
Cora knelt.
Sera followed.
"Master Voss," Cora said, her voice steady and clear. "We are yours. Completely. Without reservation. Without question."
"Until the end," Sera said.
"Until the end," Cora repeated.
Holden looked down at them, two women kneeling in the wet grass on a hill overlooking a destroyed city. Two weapons Vespera had left behind, now pointed toward the people who had taken her life.
"Stand up."
They rose.
Holden reached into his Inventory and pulled out Vespera’s journal.
He opened it to the first page. The page with the names.
1. Lord Vandiba. Rank 4, 1-Star. Poison and shadow specialist. Location: Ruins of Oakhaven, eastern border.
Holden took a pen from his Inventory. The black ink moved across the page as he drew a line through Vandiba’s name.
One down. Six to go.
He closed the journal and looked at the Twins. Then at the ruins behind them. Above, the clouds were finally beginning to thin, revealing the first patch of blue sky he had seen in days.
"Let’s move," he said. "We have six more names on this list."
Holden looked east, toward the horizon and the next target.
"And the Syndicate is going to learn what happens when you kill my master."
