Chapter 402: Chapter 377: Make the Xuanfeng Alliance Send the People Back
Duodoli didn’t hesitate for a moment. He ordered his secretary to make the arrangements and left his office immediately.
Outside the administrative building, a car was already waiting, along with a large security detail.
Rebellions were still ongoing, so he had to be extremely careful whenever he went out. If an assassination attempt occurred and something happened to him, Myanmar, which had only just begun to stabilize, would descend into chaos once more.
Moreover, if something were to happen to him, the chaos would be even worse.
"Mr. Duodoli." A guard captain immediately stepped forward.
"Let’s go. We’re heading to the border," Duodoli ordered at once, then ducked into the car.
The guard captain immediately waved his hand, ordering everyone into their vehicles to form the escort.
Several military vehicles followed in front of and behind Duodoli’s car. The convoy sped toward the border.
After a bumpy journey, he arrived at a mountain near the border, took out a large pair of binoculars, and scanned the surroundings.
According to the intelligence he’d received, there were several escape routes across the border in this area.
Sure enough, through his binoculars, he quickly spotted people crossing the border at three different locations.
’Do these people have such little regard for their own country?’
’Is the Xuanfeng Alliance really that good?’
The next moment, some of his guards departed. They went to a border defense post, mobilized a number of soldiers, and pursued the people who were fleeing.
Before long, more than 30 people were captured and brought before Duodoli.
They all carried bundles on their backs, their faces filled with terror as they looked at Duodoli and the surrounding soldiers.
Duodoli frowned and asked, "Why would you forsake your own country? Why flee to the Xuanfeng Alliance?"
His words caused the refugees’ faces to drain of color, their expressions becoming even more terrified.
"Your Excellency, spare us! We truly have no other choice."
"That’s right, Myanmar is finished. That Duodoli is completely incompetent."
"Yes, it’s because Duodoli is incompetent that we have no hope of survival."
"If there’s no hope, of course we have to flee."
"..."
Duodoli’s expression turned utterly grim upon hearing this.
He had sacrificed so much to end the chaos in Myanmar sooner, and now, in these people’s eyes, it was all his fault?
"Heh." Duodoli laughed self-deprecatingly. "I’ve done so much, and it all turns out to be my fault."
As he spoke, he abruptly snatched a weapon from a nearby guard and began to fire wildly at the crowd.
Wails of agony, pleas for mercy, cries of grief and anger... all rang out one after another.
In an instant, there were more than 30 new corpses, and the smell of blood filled the air.
The scene sent a chill down the spines of the surrounding guards. Clearly, Mr. Duodoli was furious.
"Clean up the bodies," Duodoli grunted coldly and turned to leave.
The guard captain immediately ordered three men to stay behind. "Dispose of the bodies. The rest of you, continue protecting Mr. Duodoli."
The three guards nodded, found some hoes, and began to dig.
A moment later, one of them took out a special device and started filming the bodies.
This made the other two frown. They asked at the same time:
"What are you doing?"
"What are you filming?"
The guard said hurriedly, "You guys know I like to film things with my camera equipment. Just gathering some footage for keeps."
This made the two guards frown even more deeply.
One of them reminded him, "You didn’t film Mr. Duodoli shooting those people just now, did you?"
The guard froze and fell silent.
The other man’s face changed drastically. "Who told you to film that? Are you trying to get yourself killed? Delete it, quickly!"
The three were from the same hometown; they didn’t want to see one of their own do something stupid and get himself killed.
Seeing how serious his two comrades were, the guard didn’t dare to film anymore. However, he didn’t delete the footage. Instead, he uploaded it to his private, secure cloud storage.
Without his password, no one could open the file.
Then, he and his two comrades busied themselves with digging a large pit. They tossed the bodies into it one by one and finally buried them.
Duodoli took his men to the border defense post. The moment he was inside, he began furiously smashing things.
The earlier scene had truly infuriated him. ’I’ve become the villain in all this.’
"Issue the order! Seal the border! Dispatch patrols everywhere and prohibit anyone from crossing the border illegally. If anyone defies the order, arrest them all and lock them up," Duodoli commanded, his face dark.
The guard captain beside him hurried out, made a phone call, and relayed Duodoli’s order.
Before long, martial law was declared along the Myanmar border. A dedicated military unit patrolled the frontier, and there was no telling how many people they arrested each day.
This brought the tide of refugees to a sudden halt.
At this time, Duodoli also summoned the generals under his command. These were all former rebel generals whom he had previously placated and recruited.
"You all know what’s going on," Duodoli said with a frown. "Because of our internal turmoil, we have lost a huge portion of our population. We previously thought it was only one-seventh, but new statistics show the loss has now exceeded one-sixth."
"Think about it. What does that mean in terms of economic losses, lost labor, lost tax revenue, and a shrinking market?"
At his words, the generals lowered their heads in silence, some even looking ashamed.
They too had previously believed him to be incompetent. ’Since everyone else was rebelling, we had to secure our own benefits.’
But it was now clear that he was quite capable; he simply hadn’t bothered to contend with Cai Caida and Sayer before.
Therefore, they also bore some responsibility for the current situation.
"Sigh, we need to figure out a solution now," one of them sighed.
"Indeed. We can’t let more people escape, and just sealing the border won’t be enough," said another.
That was true. They all knew that sealing the border was merely a stopgap measure; they couldn’t keep it sealed forever.
Duodoli knew this better than anyone. He said coldly, "Therefore, we must address the root of the problem."
This prompted a general to ask with a frown, "Mr. Duodoli, does that mean we must quickly crush the remaining rebellions?"
Duodoli shook his head. "I’m not talking about the rebellions. I’m talking about the Xuanfeng Alliance. If the Xuanfeng Alliance wasn’t taking in our refugees, this current exodus wouldn’t even be happening."
"Therefore, this tide of refugees will only stop when the Xuanfeng Alliance stops accepting them."
"Most importantly, we cannot simply let over one-sixth of our population slip away. They are our people."
"This is non-negotiable. We must send a formal letter to the Xuanfeng Alliance, demanding they repatriate our people. Otherwise, they will face our wrath."
"So, gentlemen, assemble the bulk of your forces at the border. We need to make sure the Xuanfeng Alliance sees the commotion."
"Yes, Mr. Duodoli."
"Understood, Mr. Duodoli."
"..."
The men all responded in agreement. Before long, the majority of the forces Duodoli had brought under his control began to mass along the border, their aim directed at the Xuanfeng Alliance.
They even began dispatching soldiers to appear near Dalat Town.
Everyone knew that Dalat Town was where the Xuanfeng Alliance had gotten its start, and it was now developing quite well.
Their goal was to put pressure on the Xuanfeng Alliance.
Only by applying enough pressure would the Xuanfeng Alliance choose to compromise and send the people back.
