Chapter 309: Chapter 211: Final Battle
Delayed by Qingshan and the others, Yu Fei failed to catch up to the main group. He chased them all the way to the base station, only to see Zhang Hu’s squad duck inside.
"Quick! Seal every entrance! Barricade all the doors and windows! The moment you hear the slightest sound, open fire and saturate them!"
The base station only had two main doors, front and back, and a limited number of windows. Yu Fei sized it up for a good while, finding himself in a difficult spot.
He tried shooting at the doors and windows with his Eagle Strike, but to no avail. The upperclassmen were too crafty; they refused to show themselves.
Yu Fei tried a variety of methods, but still couldn’t break through.
When he used Zhanming to smash through the main door, a dense hail of bullets nearly took him out on the spot. Upperclassmen were lying in ambush at every possible entry point, ready to open fire the moment he showed his face.
In such a confined space, they didn’t even need to aim. Frustrated, Yu Fei circled the base station several times but found no opening.
If the rest of the Yulin Army were here to provide cover with a feint attack, Yu Fei might have a chance to charge in and tear them apart from the inside. ’But with just Qin Hao and the other three,’ he thought, ’I’d better give up on that idea.’
The night dragged on. Zhang Hu and his squad held the base station. Although they had received supplies and their fatigue had eased, they still felt incredibly frustrated.
Yu Fei was far too patient. He launched a surprise attack every ten minutes or so, ensuring they couldn’t relax for a second, their eyes glued to the doors, windows, and other entrances.
"Is this kid nuts?!"
Yun Jing, frustrated, couldn’t help but curse aloud. Given the situation, Yu Fei was destined to fail, and it looked like this was how the exercise would end. But the guy was just too damn stubborn, never giving up.
Zhang Hu let out a long sigh. "Sigh... He’s trying to wear us down, just like we did to him during the day. This is his revenge."
In reality, Zhang Hu had guessed wrong. Yu Fei had asked Qin Hao and the others to deliver supplies and, while they were at it, check if the base station Li Jueyin originally held was empty. If it was, he would have the four remaining members of the Yulin Army garrison the two base stations.
The rules stated that a successful defense of a base station would earn five million merit points, but they didn’t say whether defending two would double the reward. Yu Fei wanted to give it a try.
That was why he had to keep Zhang Hu and his squad pinned down in the building before him. Of course, if their defense slipped and Yu Fei could reap greater rewards, that would be a bonus. If he managed to charge in, he might even be able to eliminate everyone left.
The roar of attacks continued through the night. By the time day broke, Zhang Hu’s squad had been thoroughly tormented. Yu Fei had been probing for an opening to attack all night, and even though he was repelled every time, the process was mentally exhausting for the defenders.
They couldn’t help but admire Yu Fei’s stamina. They had all been fighting for a full day, and Yu Fei’s energy expenditure was definitely greater than theirs. Yet he still had the energy to harass them all night. It was just... incredible.
"Mr. Hu, let’s just go out and fight the kid! This is so damn humiliating! His stealth had openings during the day. The worst that can happen is a repeat of yesterday!"
Zhang Hu silently ate a compressed military ration. It was part of their captured supplies.
"Fight? How are we supposed to fight? Qingshan’s out, and I’ve got a crippled hand. We can’t stop Yu Fei in a frontal assault. If we try, all of you will be eliminated!
"Just focus on defending. At least we’re not short on supplies. Think of it as a test of willpower. You have to look at it this way: we’re sitting comfortably in this building, while Yu Fei’s the one jumping up and down outside!"
There was no way Zhang Hu was going to fight Yu Fei. He’d just done a headcount: his Puppy Patrol still had 24 people, while the Sleep Bureau was down to 21. Based on their bet, he was going to win no matter what.
That would be at least thirty million merit points in his account. It was a win no matter how he spun it.
Feng Hua would lose twenty million to him and still have to pay the victory merits for Yu Fei and his team. Qingshan wasn’t in much better shape either.
This way, Puppy Patrol might be able to pull ahead of the other teams.
The jarring explosions never stopped. Yun Jing stared blankly into space. By this point, the defenders had grown numb, focused on nothing but defense. ’As long as Yu Fei doesn’t break in, we’ll be fine!’
"Doesn’t he get tired? Infusing bullets with energy consumes Inner Qi!"
"You forgot? The guy can refine Yang Qi to restore his Inner Qi during the day. He basically recharges by soaking up some sun!"
"Argh! That animal! I really can’t take it anymore! Should we go out there and have a go at him?"
"You go if you want. The exercise is over in an hour, and then we’ll be free. I don’t want to get shot at this stage of the game and end up in a healing tank."
"Sigh... This is just karma!"
Yu Fei kept watch over the base station right until the exercise ended.
An old but gentle voice suddenly echoed in their minds.
"The exercise is over, little ones. Get some rest!"
Immediately, orbs of green light descended from the sky, precisely entering each person’s body.
The energy felt like the very source of life. As it entered their bodies, it nourished their frames and soothed their spirits like a gentle spring rain.
Yu Fei unconsciously lowered Zhanming, spreading his arms to experience the vitality within the light.
It felt like every cell in his body was getting a deep-tissue spa treatment. After a long moment, Yu Fei felt completely rejuvenated. He was in better shape than he’d ever been, and even his Inner Qi flowed with more agility.
Zhang Hu closed his eyes, sensing the vital essence within the orb of light. He was, in fact, the biggest beneficiary of this "Gift of the Green Emperor." The [Jia Wood Transformation Body] he practiced was of the same lineage as the Green Emperor’s arts. While the others only enjoyed the healing effects, Zhang Hu could actually advance his Cultivation Technique.
Yun Jing ran out of the base station cheering. "Haha, it’s finally over! Yu Fei, you bastard, I was going stir-crazy in there!"
The others followed, looking with complicated expressions at the tattered Yu Fei not far away. The guy was just something else, pinning them at their door for a full day and night.
