I Came to Divorce Him—His Whole Regiment Adopted Me
Chapter 70: Mr. Gao
Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Mr. Gao
"Gao Qiang is just jealous of you." Zhang Yun couldn’t help but snort indignantly as she said this.
"Jealous of what?" Su Wan asked.
Zhang Yun slammed her hands on the dining table. "She’s jealous of how smart you are! She couldn’t secure a permanent position at the research institute, but she’s jealous that the leaders and directors already value you, even before you’ve officially joined."
When Su Wan didn’t say anything, Zhang Yun, afraid she wouldn’t be believed, insisted, "It’s true! Gao Qiang admitted it herself, right in front of the institute’s leaders."
Su Wan frowned. "I haven’t had much contact with Gao Qiang at the institute recently. We’re not even in the same research group. Her jealousy is just too bizarre."
"Don’t worry, she’s already been disciplined. I just don’t get why it was only a disciplinary action and she still gets to stay at the institute."
Zhang Yun sounded resentful as she said this.
’Gao Qiang’s actions were no different from Zheng Zhizhi’s,’ she thought. ’So why is Zheng Zhizhi banned from the military compound while Gao Qiang gets away with it?’
Seeing her indignant attitude, Su Wan suddenly grew a little worried. "You didn’t get into an argument with Gao Qiang, did you?"
"How did you know?" Zhang Yun instinctively covered her mouth with her hand.
After saying this, she looked a little guilty.
Su Wan sighed and pressed a hand to her forehead. Just then, she saw Lu Zhengchuan return after washing the dishes. She helplessly explained the situation, "Lu Zhengchuan, Gao Qiang’s father, Mr. Gao from the Capital Military District, is your superior."
"From what I understand, Gao Qiang is petty and holds grudges. She’s not a magnanimous person. I’m afraid we’ve really offended her this time."
Su Wan had been too furious about the two of them targeting her children. In her anger, she hadn’t cared at all about who she might be offending.
At that moment, she had even wanted everyone to just die.
Su Wan knew this was the psychological trauma from her prophetic dreams.
"I don’t know Mr. Gao, but you don’t need to worry about this." It was the first time Lu Zhengchuan had seen worry in Su Wan’s eyes. He patted his chest reassuringly. "For one, I already mentioned this to Master Ji. And for another, Gao Qiang was caught red-handed. Mr. Gao can’t openly make things difficult for us. Otherwise, wouldn’t it look like he’s challenging the leadership of the Southwest Military Region?"
"I’m worried your career will be affected." Although Su Wan didn’t understand the military, she knew that Huaxia was a country that ran on social nuances. To reach a high position, one had to understand the ways of the world without becoming jaded by them.
Lu Zhengchuan stepped forward and took her hand. "Don’t you trust my abilities?"
"Do you think I can’t handle any trouble Mr. Gao might cause?"
Su Wan shook her head and said seriously, "It’s not that I think you can’t handle whatever trouble he might cause. I’m more worried that if you do run into difficulties and your career stalls, you’ll think I’m the one who brought you trouble. You might feel I owe you, and then you’ll start to resent me."
Lu Zhengchuan noticed that Su Wan was always exceptionally realistic. He just shook his head. "If I really thought that way, I believe you’d be able to sense it even if I didn’t say a word."
"So don’t worry about it for now. If that really does happen, I’ll support you in whatever you choose to do."
Lu Zhengchuan had unwittingly said exactly what Su Wan needed to hear.
She nodded, choosing not to distrust Lu Zhengchuan on this matter any longer.
’It hasn’t happened yet, anyway,’ she thought. ’No need to get anxious ahead of time.’
"Cousin, it’s all my fault. I’m the one who argued with Gao Qiang. If she holds a grudge, it’ll be because of me. Please don’t blame Su Wan."
Watching the two of them discuss Gao Qiang back and forth, Zhang Yun’s heart leaped into her throat.
She instinctively stood in front of Su Wan, shielding her. She was even starting to distrust Lu Zhengchuan, afraid her cousin would get angry at Su Wan.
She had witnessed this incident with her own eyes. It was safe to say Su Wan was completely innocent. "Cousin, if you blame her for this, I’ll be angry."
"Since when did you see me blaming Wanwan?" Lu Zhengchuan scolded her, his face cold. "If you can’t say something helpful, then don’t say anything at all."
He just didn’t understand why even his own family thought he had no tolerance for Wanwan.
"Cousin... I was just being cautious, just in case." Zhang Yun rubbed her nose, not thinking there was anything wrong with what she’d said, and even gave a soft huff.
Paying no mind to their bickering, Su Wan simply stood up.
"Wanwan," Lu Zhengchuan called out to stop her. "You must be too wound up to sleep. I’m already heating up some water so you can soak your feet in a bit."
Su Wan nodded. "I’m going to the bedroom to read for a while. If you two have things to do, go ahead."
With that, Su Wan went into the bedroom.
Lu Zhengchuan glanced at her retreating back, then turned and went into the kitchen.
Zhang Yun followed him into the kitchen, rubbing her stomach. "Cousin, I’m hungry."
"Find something yourself. See if there are any leftovers." Lu Zhengchuan was not the least bit gentle with her, his tone full of disdain.
Zhang Yun opened the cupboard, saw two leftover buns and half a plate of stir-fried pork, and immediately started eating after quickly heating them on the stove.
She had just taken two bites when she heard a commotion outside the door.
Her ears perked up. Clutching a bun, she ran outside.
Lu Zhengchuan glanced at her and warned, "Don’t cause any trouble. If you cause any more trouble, I’ll send you back to the village immediately."
"I know, I know." Zhang Yun waved her hand impatiently.
She had no idea that she would be returning to the village soon, whether she caused trouble or not.
Zhang Yun ran to the courtyard gate and saw Aunt Liu twisting Liu Xiangju’s ear, cursing and scolding her in a low voice.
"Are you out of your mind? You’re with Song Feng now, but you ran off to give Liu Lang eggs. If Song Feng finds out, what will he think of you!"
"Do you not want to get married? Do you not want a good life?"
Listening from the gate, Zhang Yun found herself nodding in agreement.
"Mom, I was just giving him one last gift. After all, he gave me a lot of things in the past. And after what happened, he paid us the compensation money as agreed, without any intentional delays to spite us."
"He’s actually not a bad person. His parents forced his hand. That’s why he’s all alone and injured with no one to take care of him now."
Liu Xiangju knew her actions were somewhat improper.
But she just felt sorry for Liu Lang.
Of course, she had no intention of getting back together with Liu Lang. She was purely repaying a favor for his past kindness.
"Whether he has someone to take care of him is none of your business! If you had any sense, you would have let me go! If I had gone, people would have said our Liu Family is honorable."
"But now look what you’ve done. If someone saw you and word gets out, you can just wait for Song Feng to misunderstand the whole thing."
Aunt Liu was about to die of anger. She couldn’t believe that after being sharp her whole life, she had raised such a blockhead.
Hearing this from the courtyard gate, Zhang Yun was so startled she lost her footing and bumped into the gatepost.
THUD! The sound was loud enough for a deaf person to hear, letting them know someone had just been eavesdropping.
