I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 91: An Unimportant Phone Call
Chapter 91: Chapter 91: An Unimportant Phone Call
Ryan liked seeing Evelyn like this—open and honest with him. It felt like they were a real family.
Just as he was about to say something more, his phone suddenly rang.
Ryan glanced down.
It was Julian Sterling’s number.
"Is it for work?"
Seeing that he didn’t seem inclined to answer, Evelyn asked tentatively.
Ryan silenced his phone and pursed his lips. "No, it’s nothing important."
"Oh."
He watched his phone screen light up again. It was a second call from Julian Sterling.
Soon, the calls stopped, but his phone showed an unread text message.
*Ryan, do you remember what you talked to Mom about?*
...
That night, perhaps because she had heard her baby’s heartbeat, Evelyn Grant’s dreams were all about her child already being born!
A little girl who looked just like Ryan.
With dark eyes and a fair complexion.
Ryan was very handsome, so his child was bound to be beautiful.
Evelyn was so happy, she was still smiling when she woke up!
She turned, grabbed her phone, and glanced at the screen—
It was almost 7:30!
She scrambled out of bed to wash up and get dressed. The moment she stepped out of the bedroom, the gentle aroma of congee wafted in from the dining room.
Ryan knew Evelyn liked the smell of rice—something she’d told a friend back in high school—so he made congee every morning, even on days he also made toast.
He did it just so Evelyn could wake up to a scent she loved.
He had a selfish reason, too.
He wanted Evelyn to feel at home here.
He wanted her to fall in love with this place, and quickly!
"Sit."
Ryan leaned over and pulled out her chair.
Evelyn waved her hands dismissively. "I really can’t eat today. Look at the time! I’m going to be late for work!"
Late?
That wasn’t going to happen.
"You won’t be. Don’t worry."
The words were barely out of his mouth when a notification from Mr. Shaw popped up in the law firm’s group chat.
NOTICE: The firm’s circuit breaker is down. Everyone is to work from home this morning.
"..."
Evelyn saw the message and glanced over at Ryan.
’Something feels off!’
"It’s almost like you knew my firm was working from home this morning."
A smile played on Ryan’s lips. He walked over, took her hand, and led her to her seat at the dining table.
"How could I possibly know that? All I know is that you’re pregnant and you need to eat breakfast."
Evelyn was suspicious, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on anything concrete, so she had to chalk it up to coincidence.
Still, working from home came with its own set of problems.
After a quick bite, Evelyn started organizing materials for a case and handling the follow-up for one she’d just won.
She had won the case, but the defendant was refusing to comply with the court’s ruling.
They had even secretly transferred their assets!
It was causing major problems for the court’s enforcement department.
Technically, this was no longer her responsibility as the lawyer, but Evelyn believed in seeing things through to the end and helping where she could.
So, she compiled a few useful suggestions for her client and sent them over.
Seeing Evelyn on the living room sofa, head bowed in frustration, Ryan put down his own work. He came out of the study and walked over to her.
"What’s wrong?"
"The defendant lost the case but is refusing to comply with the judgment. Now the enforcement division is asking us for leads, but my client doesn’t have any connections, so they have nothing to offer."
Ryan said simply, "Send me the defendant’s information."
Evelyn froze. "How could I trouble you with something like this?"
