Chapter 87: Chapter 87: The Sound of a Fetal Heartbeat

He was the lucky one, to have her back after losing her once before.

He was the lucky one, to have returned to the country just in time to solve her problems and keep her by his side.

That’s why Ryan Sterling never felt that Evelyn Grant was the lucky one for getting to marry him.

...

Evelyn Grant quickly tidied up and went ahead to their meeting spot to wait.

It wasn’t that she was in a hurry; she just didn’t want her colleagues to see them together again.

’Who knows what they’d say about me then!’

Fortunately, Ryan Sterling didn’t keep her waiting long. A black Cullinan pulled up right beside Evelyn Grant and came to a smooth stop.

He was about to get out and open the door for Evelyn Grant, but she reached out and stopped him.

Ryan Sterling paused. "What’s wrong?"

"I don’t want my colleagues to see. They’ll start gossiping."

Evelyn Grant opened the passenger door and got in. "We can go now."

Ryan Sterling didn’t start the engine right away. Instead, his dark eyes fixed on her.

After a moment, he asked softly, "What is it? Did someone upset you?"

’He had to hand it to himself sometimes. It was like an innate ability; he could immediately sense whenever Evelyn Grant was the slightest bit unhappy, without even having to try.’

Evelyn Grant pressed her lips together and looked down. "It’s nothing."

"It’s definitely something. What is it?"

"It’s really nothing. Let’s just go to the prenatal appointment."

Seeing that she really didn’t want to talk about it, Ryan Sterling didn’t press her further.

Soon, the car arrived at the hospital.

Ryan Sterling stuck close behind Evelyn Grant, afraid she might trip or bump into something.

When it was time for her blood draw, he could tell at a glance that Evelyn Grant was scared. He offered his arm. "If you’re scared, you can squeeze my arm. It’ll be over in a second."

Evelyn Grant looked up at him.

At that moment, she was suddenly touched by the feeling of being cared for.

It made Evelyn Grant want to cry.

"Okay."

"Don’t be afraid. I’m right here with you."

Evelyn Grant nodded.

During the ultrasound, Ryan Sterling didn’t want to miss a single second, his eyes glued to the monitor.

When the THUMP-THUMP-THUMP of the heartbeat echoed through the room, he couldn’t describe the feeling.

Ryan Sterling instinctively reached for Evelyn Grant’s hand, a smile he couldn’t contain spreading across his handsome face. "Listen! That’s our baby. That’s its heartbeat!"

"Yes, I hear it."

"Can we get a copy of this? It won’t cause any harm to the baby, will it?"

The doctor smiled. "No, it won’t. Don’t worry."

This was the first time Evelyn Grant had ever seen Ryan Sterling so excited.

’He really cares so much about this baby.’

After the ultrasound, while Evelyn Grant was waiting for the results, Ryan Sterling sent a text to Mr. Shaw.

What happened at the firm today?

A few seconds later, Mr. Shaw replied.

I’ve been with clients all day, so I haven’t heard anything. Did something happen to Ms. Grant? I’ll go ask right now!

Ryan Sterling’s expression darkened. "Go now."

When he returned to Evelyn Grant’s side, he found her with her lips pressed together, not saying a word.

She was still upset.

"Evelyn Grant, if something’s wrong, just tell me. You don’t have to hold back."

"It’s nothing."

"I can’t help but feel like you’re treating me like a stranger. It wasn’t even like this when we were kids. Back then, if something was wrong, I’d at least know a little about it."
