Evelyn Grant looked at her mother, their eyes meeting.

Chloe Shea’s eyes were filled with such sincere concern and confusion.

It was so genuine that Evelyn felt an impulse to tell her mother the truth.

Julian Sterling suddenly walked into the kitchen.

He interrupted the mother and daughter’s conversation.

"Mom, Eve, can I help with anything?"

In an instant, Evelyn came to her senses. She lowered her head and went back to what she was doing.

Chloe Shea’s smile returned. She waved her hand. "You don’t need to do anything. Just sit down and wait for dinner!"

"No, I want to help! I never had the time before, but I’m willing to learn now. That way, I can help Eve out at home in the future!"

Julian walked over, took the plates with a practiced ease, and said casually, "Mom, my company recently took on a project for medical devices. There’s one instrument that’s very effective for treating heart conditions. The client even invited a renowned cardiologist from overseas. How about I make an appointment and take you to see them?"

"Oh, don’t go to any trouble!" Chloe Shea, afraid of burdening her daughter, immediately refused. "I’m in pretty good health right now. I appreciate you thinking of me, that’s more than enough!"

"You’re my mother-in-law, Eve’s mom. Of course I’m concerned about you! And that’s exactly why you should go. If the check-up shows nothing’s wrong, then great! Everyone can rest easy. But if they do find some minor issue, we can treat it early."

Julian’s words painted the very picture of a perfect son-in-law.

It was enough to put all of Chloe Shea’s worries to rest.

"Alright then, whenever it’s convenient for you. I’ve had this condition for years, so it’s not urgent."

"Okay."

With that, Chloe Shea left, leaving the kitchen to the young couple.

The moment the door closed, Julian’s expression changed completely.

His tone was accusatory. "What were you about to tell your mom?"

"...Nothing."

"Nothing?" Julian sneered. "You were going to tell her about Jane and me, weren’t you? Fine! Go on, tell her! And then I’ll tell everyone the whole truth, and we’ll let them be the judge."

Jane Jacobs was dead, after all. No matter what she was guilty of, she couldn’t be held accountable.

But Ryan Sterling was another story.

He’s a living, breathing person.

When their parents met, no matter how well Evelyn tried to explain herself, no one would understand her relationship with Ryan.

"Julian Sterling! Should I applaud your acting?" Evelyn glared at him.

Evelyn looked at the smug look on his face and pitied herself for the genuine love she had once given him.

"I’m lying because my mother can’t handle the shock! I’m worried about her health. It has nothing to do with you or the Sterling family!"

"I don’t care about that. All I need to know is that in your mother’s eyes, I’m her only son-in-law, and it has nothing to do with Ryan Sterling. That’s enough for me!"
