I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 67: Dignity After Divorce
Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Dignity After Divorce
Evelyn Grant instantly went still, ceasing her struggles.
To Julian Sterling, her reaction was an infuriating sight. He even found himself wishing she wouldn’t be cowed by his threat—or that she would tell him she had nothing to do with his brother!
But, no.
Evelyn Grant’s expression was a clear, tacit admission of her relationship with Ryan Sterling.
Julian Sterling’s handsome face instantly darkened. "Feeling guilty?"
"Why should I feel guilty?"
"You got involved with Ryan, and you think that’s something to be proud of? Don’t you know our relationship?"
Evelyn Grant’s lips curled. "I know. But you of all people should know why I ended up with him..."
"..."
"If you expose what’s between me and him, then I’ll tell my mother how you tried to get me sentenced to death—all for another woman!"
Julian Sterling scoffed. "You won’t tell her."
’Her mother’s health could never withstand such a shock.’
’It would probably land her in the hospital again!’
Evelyn Grant clenched her fists and glared at him. "And you’re proud of that?"
A flicker of awkwardness crossed his face before vanishing. "All I can say is that you were the primary suspect. I was reasonably assisting the police, which is my duty as a citizen! I couldn’t just cover for you because you were my wife, could I?"
"No, you couldn’t, and I never asked you to. But you lied to me! From the very beginning, you were determined to see me put away, and yet you still lied and told me you believed me!"
’What truly broke her heart wasn’t that he’d brought people to arrest her, nor was it the death sentence.’
It was...
Evelyn Grant saw it clearly: Julian Sterling didn’t love her. Not even a little.
’Even after she had poured her entire heart out for him, she had gotten nothing in return.’
"I was just—"
"Don’t bother, and don’t treat me like a fool! I will never trust you again! I’ve already given you a decent divorce, so please, stay far away from me."
Evelyn Grant had just finished speaking when she heard footsteps coming down the stairs from above.
It was Chloe Shea.
Julian Sterling’s expression suddenly changed, and his voice became laced with a pleading tone.
"I truly know I was wrong. Just give me one more chance! I promise, it will absolutely never happen again."
Just as Evelyn Grant was about to speak, Chloe Shea cut in first.
"Eve! Julian is already begging you like this, so don’t be so stubborn! He’s busy at the company all day, working from dawn to dusk. It’s not easy for him! As his wife, you should be more understanding!"
"..."
She instinctively glanced at Julian Sterling.
His thin lips curled almost imperceptibly.
’He knew that with his mother-in-law present, he had a chance to get close to Evelyn Grant.’
"Mom, please don’t say that. It really is my fault, and I have to admit when I’m wrong. It’s not easy for two people to build a life together, and I can’t let Eve feel aggrieved all the time!"
"Whatever is going on, just drop it for now and come upstairs to eat dumplings! I made them from scratch, and my back is killing me." Chloe Shea went over and grabbed her daughter’s wrist. "Come on, let’s go back up."
Evelyn Grant’s brow furrowed.
The urge to blurt out the truth was overwhelming in that moment, but she knew she couldn’t.
Feeling the warmth of her mother’s hand in hers, she didn’t dare to gamble.
The doctor had stressed over and over that her mother couldn’t take another shock. If her heart was put under any more stress, it was uncertain if she could be revived.
"Eve?"
Chloe Shea called her name again.
She pressed her lips together and took a breath. "Okay."
