In the law office.

Chloe Shea’s call came just as Evelyn Grant had finished organizing her files and was getting ready to head to the courthouse.

There was an important hearing today. She had already fallen behind on a lot of work because of the situation with Jane Jacobs, so she had to press on even though she wasn’t feeling well.

"Eve, can you come home today?"

"Today?"

"Yes! It’s urgent."

The moment she heard her mother say it was urgent, Evelyn Grant’s voice grew tense. "Are you not feeling well again? Is Alex home?"

"He has something to do for school, so he’s not here." Chloe Shea didn’t state the reason directly, simply saying, "Don’t drag your brother into this. I’m telling you to come home today."

"..." Evelyn Grant sensed something was off. "Mom, I’m really swamped with work! I have two hearings today! Please, just tell me what it is. If we can handle it over the phone, then I won’t have to make a special trip!"

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go home, but she had to take care of her work at the firm first.

’Once I take a client’s case, I have to be responsible!’

"So now I have to schedule an appointment just to see you?"

Evelyn Grant sighed helplessly. "No, Mom..."

"Then come home! Come straight here after work."

Her brow furrowed. "Mom, did someone contact you? What did they say?"

Evelyn Grant just felt that her mother wasn’t acting like herself today.

Usually, whenever she mentioned being busy with work, her mother would at most just tell her to take care of herself. She had never been so insistent about her coming home.

"Who... who would contact me? I just miss you and want to see you."

Her mother had already put it that way, so what else could Evelyn Grant do?

She took a deep breath and glanced at the time for her hearings. "My two cases won’t be over until five or six this afternoon, and then I have to speak with my clients. I estimate I can get to your place around seven or eight."

"I’ll eat anything. Don’t tire yourself out."

"I’ve already called Eve. She said she’s busy with work today and won’t be able to get here until seven or eight! If you have other things to do, you can go take care of them and come back after she arrives."

Chloe Shea knew her son-in-law was usually very busy with work.

"I’ll just wait here. Think of it as a gesture of my sincerity. Eve feels that I haven’t been attentive enough to her, so I have to show her I’m trying."

She saw it as proof that her son-in-law truly cared for her daughter.
