I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 59: Aren’t I Also to Blame?
Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Aren’t I Also to Blame?
As if he were the one who owed Mr. Jacobs money.
Seeing Julian Sterling hesitate, Mr. Jacobs immediately sensed something and said hurriedly, "You just said you’d agree to anything within your power! Now I’m just asking for an IOU, and you’re already backing out?"
Julian Sterling’s lips moved again and again, but in the end, he just couldn’t bring himself to say the words, "I can’t give you that much money."
"I..."
"If you won’t give it to me, then fine. I’ll go to the Sterling family estate and cause a scene! I’ll hound you the same way the media hounded me—you, and that wife of yours... what’s her name, Grant! Maybe if I kick up a big enough fuss, we can get the case reopened and win my daughter justice and clear her name!"
’Reopen the case?’
Julian Sterling frowned.
’If they really reopen the case, wouldn’t Evelyn Grant have to face prison time again, or even the death penalty?’
’No.’
’He no longer wanted Evelyn Grant to pay with her life.’
"I’ll pay, alright? There’s no need for an IOU. I’ll give you the ten million in three payments. Once you have the money, this is all over."
Having gotten the promise he wanted, Mr. Jacobs was naturally delighted.
"Alright! Ah, Young Sterling, now I finally believe you. You really did care for our Jane! If it’s ever possible, you’d best find the evidence to clear her name and see justice done!"
"...Mm."
The call ended. Julian Sterling felt his frustration level skyrocket.
It even reached a point where he lost all self-control.
’How did life suddenly turn into this?’
...
Aside from Julian Sterling, the biggest problem Evelyn Grant now faced was Ryan Sterling.
He... was different from other men, after all.
It wasn’t as if Evelyn Grant had never been pursued before. But with those men, she could always politely decline with just a few words without getting to know them too well.
But Ryan Sterling... he had helped her so much.
It was no exaggeration to say he had saved her life.
But...
That didn’t mean she could agree to be with him.
Evelyn Grant’s eyes were downcast. She had been picking at the congee in her bowl for ages, but it hardly looked like she had eaten any.
One glance was all it took for Ryan Sterling to notice something was off.
He didn’t point it out, though.
He had a pretty good idea what was going on.
"Still no appetite?"
Evelyn Grant forced a smile. "I’m okay. I’m already full."
"Then let me take you out for a walk."
"Ryan Sterling."
She looked up.
Ryan Sterling replied in a gentle voice, "Yes, I’m here."
"I know you’re busy with work. You really don’t have to stay with me all the time! I’m fine now."
She had no intention of calling the police.
Although what the Sterling family had done was illegal, Ryan Sterling had thankfully stopped things before they got worse.
Besides...
Evelyn Grant knew Florence Morgan hadn’t acted out of malice.
She had just wanted her and Julian Sterling to get remarried.
After all, everyone knew how much she used to love Julian Sterling.
’If anyone was at fault, maybe...’
’...she was at fault, too.’
"My work isn’t as important as you."
"Ryan Sterling, please don’t be like this."
He pressed his lips into a thin line and said no more.
’Some feelings... other people would never understand. They weren’t him. They could never know how deep his love ran.’
He had long been prepared for Evelyn Grant’s lack of understanding.
She took a deep breath and put down her bowl. "Go back to Eldoria. We... it’s really not possible."
"I’m not going back."
"..."
"Evelyn Grant, it was my fault in the past. I know I’m not as gentle as my older brother, and I’m not as good with words or as skilled at winning you over as he is. But I will never betray you."
Ryan Sterling knew what his own problem was.
He just wanted a chance to change.
