Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Ryan Sterling Doesn’t Want to Lie to Evelyn Grant

She had truly believed she would be the happiest person in the world, that she had found the most enviable marriage!

But in the end, it all turned out to be an empty dream.

The scene in her dream shifted. Suddenly, she was back at the Sterling Estate, and Julian Sterling was snarling at her, "A life for a life."

"I didn’t... I really didn’t! I didn’t!"

Suddenly, Evelyn Grant’s eyes flew open!

Her gaze fell upon a white ceiling. A faint, almost unnoticeable smell of medicine was in the air.

"Mrs. Sterling, you’re awake!"

Hearing the voice beside her, Evelyn Grant instinctively looked over.

The doctor quickly steadied her wrist. "Don’t move. You’re on an IV drip."

Perhaps afraid of startling her, the doctor’s warning was spoken in a soft, gentle whisper, wary of causing Evelyn any discomfort.

She lay there quietly for a while, feeling like she had recovered a little, before finally speaking in a hoarse voice, "Am I... okay?"

"You’re fine! Mr. Sterling has already confirmed it several times."

’Mr. Sterling.’

Evelyn Grant blinked her long lashes, taking a few seconds to process it. "Ryan Sterling?"

The doctor found it a bit strange. ’Why would Mrs. Sterling ask that?’

After all, who else could it be but her husband?

"Yes, Mr. Ryan Sterling."

Evelyn lowered her gaze. "Could you please hand me my phone?"

"Of course."

The doctor quickly retrieved her phone and handed it to her.

Evelyn first called Ryan Sterling. After just one ring, she heard a phone ringing right outside her room!

’He must have rushed back.’

Even though he was only a few steps away, Ryan Sterling answered the call first.

"Evelyn Grant, you’re awake!"

"Mhm." Although she was still very weak, she finally had some strength to speak. "Weren’t you out?"

"I was."

The next second, Ryan Sterling pushed open the door to the room.

He strode over to her side in a few long steps.

"I’m back."

Evelyn Grant stared at his handsome face, which bore a slight resemblance to Julian Sterling’s, feeling a bit dazed.

"You were the one who saved me..."

"It’s in the past. Don’t dwell on it." Ryan Sterling furrowed his brow, unwilling to speak of it further.

Evelyn suddenly noticed a wound on Ryan Sterling’s face.

A fresh one, it seemed!

"Did you... go see Julian Sterling? And you fought?"

"None of that has anything to do with you. Don’t think about it, and don’t worry about it." Ryan Sterling pulled her directly into his arms and gently stroked her back. "Do you want something to eat? Or maybe I can take you for a walk?"

Evelyn Grant shook her head. "I want to be alone for a bit."

"Right now, I don’t dare leave you alone." Ryan Sterling was afraid she might do something rash.

He couldn’t predict the extent of the trauma this incident had caused Evelyn, so he couldn’t take any chances.

"Aren’t you busy?"

Evelyn Grant thought Ryan Sterling must have a lot of things to deal with at his company.

’How does it seem like... he always has time to hover around me?’

"I am busy," Ryan Sterling said with a small smile. "Busy taking care of you."

"..."

"There’s something I have to confess to you."

His expression was solemn and serious, with no hint of joking.

Evelyn Grant nodded lightly. "Go on."

"Because you were drugged... back then, to help you recover as quickly as possible and stop your temperature from rising any further, I..."

Ryan Sterling didn’t want to lie to Evelyn Grant.

Even though he had countless perfectly good reasons to do so.
