Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Ryan Sterling’s Mysophobia Is Very Severe

"Then I’ll do as you say. Bottom line, you get Eve back and make her my daughter-in-law! I won’t accept anyone else." At her age, Florence Morgan had a tendency to ramble. "She’s such a wonderful wife. If you don’t cherish her, you’ll definitely regret it down the line!"

This was the last thing Julian Sterling wanted to hear right now.

It felt like the entire world was suddenly taking Evelyn Grant’s side and criticizing him.

What had he done wrong?

All he did was choose to believe Jane Jacobs over Evelyn Grant! How could one wrong choice make him public enemy number one?

"I’ve already humbled myself for her. What more does she want?" His voice was laced with annoyance and frustration. "I’m sick, and she hasn’t even come to see me."

"Eve is still angry, isn’t she?" Florence Morgan heard the impatience in her son’s voice. "Fine, what’s done is done, and I don’t want to lecture you anymore. Just hurry up and get your hands on that... stuff. I’ll help you one last time. Whether it works out or not will be up to fate."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Julian Sterling instinctively reached for his phone to call Evelyn Grant.

But his finger hovered over her number, and in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to press it.

His pride wouldn’t allow him to keep humbling himself before Evelyn Grant.

’It’s not like I haven’t given her an out. But she’s still being stubborn and refusing to take it. I can’t keep coddling her.’

His thick brows furrowed. Julian Sterling dialed another number instead.

"That stuff you guys used to use on women at the bar... get me some."

...

Evelyn Grant didn’t know when she had fallen asleep.

When she woke up and opened her eyes, she realized she had slept in Ryan Sterling’s bed!

She quickly sat up and scanned the room, but she didn’t see anyone else.

Ryan wasn’t there.

Only his unique scent, his presence, lingered in every corner of the bedroom...

The room was, of course, immaculate.

Ryan Sterling was a notorious clean freak.

The black, white, and gray decor made it clear this was a man’s private space.

Evelyn Grant didn’t leave right away. First, she folded the comforter, putting everything back the way it was, before returning to her own room to get ready.

She’d barely slept a wink, so it was no surprise she had a headache.

After she was ready, she went downstairs and found Ryan Sterling was home—he was in the kitchen.

"Are you feeling better?"

Evelyn Grant was a little surprised to see him emerge with a plate of toast.

"Yeah, the fever broke."

"That’s good. Well, I’m off to work!"

She turned to leave.

"Eat first," Ryan Sterling called out, stopping her.

"There’s no time! I’m going to be late!" Evelyn Grant wasn’t just being polite.

There was an eight o’clock morning meeting at the firm, and it was already seven-thirty!

And then, a second later—

Her phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from Mr. Shaw.

"Ms. Grant, they’re redoing the plumbing and wiring at the office today, so everyone’s working from home!"

"..."

"I’ll let you know when we’re back to normal."

"Okay."

Evelyn Grant put down her phone and looked back at Ryan Sterling.

He raised an eyebrow. "Hm? What’s wrong?"

"I guess... I have time for breakfast now." ℯℯ𝑙.

"Then sit. I made oatmeal."

He turned and went back into the kitchen. Evelyn Grant took a breath, pulled out a chair, and sat down at the dining table.

Breakfast wasn’t the point.

The point was that Evelyn Grant wanted to talk to Ryan Sterling about the "compensation" plan he’d mentioned last night.

The idea of turning their pretense into reality felt incredibly shaky.

Most importantly, Ryan Sterling wasn’t just some random person—he was Julian Sterling’s own brother!
