Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Nutritional Medicine Brought Back to the Country
She opened her mouth to argue, but Ryan Sterling leaned in and captured her lips, even giving them a gentle bite.
"Evelyn Grant, I’m the one who decides if it’s worth it. I set the standard here."
Evelyn Grant pressed a hand to her lips and blinked.
Her cheeks flushed. "You... We’re in public, and you just..."
"We’re legally married. I can kiss you whenever I want."
"..."
Ryan Sterling took her hand and gave it a squeeze. "When I get back, I’ll bring gifts for you and the baby."
Evelyn Grant froze. "The baby?"
"That’s right."
"You don’t even know if it’s a boy or a girl. What kind of gift will you bring?"
"Whatever I get, it’ll be a heartfelt gift from their father." Ryan Sterling already had it all planned out.
’Since he didn’t know, he’d just prepare two gifts.’
’Whether it was a boy or a girl, they would have a present.’
’He wouldn’t love his child any less because of their gender. This was the baby Evelyn Grant was carrying for him; no matter what, they would be his treasure.’
...
Julian Sterling paid another visit to his former mother-in-law’s home, and this time, he came prepared.
He wasn’t alone. He had brought a cardiologist with him.
When Chloe Shea opened the door and saw Julian Sterling’s tall frame standing there, she froze for a moment.
But a second later, she saw the doctor standing behind him and understood.
"Julian, you really did find a doctor for me!"
"Of course! Mom, didn’t I tell you I would last time? That I’d bring a doctor to come see you."
Chloe Shea quickly stepped back to let them in. "Come, come inside and have a seat. Don’t just stand in the doorway!"
"Thank you, Mom."
Julian Sterling smiled and stepped inside.
Chloe Shea poured them some water. Just as she was about to get some fruit from the refrigerator, Julian Sterling walked over and said, with a warm and practiced ease, "I’ll get it, Mom. Please, don’t get up!"
If Julian Sterling had maintained his usual polite but distant demeanor, Chloe Shea would have known how to react, just as she always had.
But now, she was genuinely at a loss for how to respond.
’Because... this son-in-law of hers had never, ever acted like this before!’
Then again, it was normal for a son-in-law to treat his mother-in-law’s house as his own, so she couldn’t really say anything to the contrary.
"Julian, you..."
"Mom, I know where I went wrong in the past, so naturally, I have to do my best to make up for it now! I’ll be like this from now on. I’ll treat you well and be a good son to you. You can rest assured."
Chloe Shea still looked uncomfortable, her smile a little stiff.
"You haven’t been fighting with Eve again, have you?"
"No, I’ve been busy with work, so how would I have time to argue with her? It’s just that I remembered I promised you I’d bring a doctor to check on your heart, so I cleared my schedule and brought him over right away."
Chloe Shea breathed a sigh of relief when she heard they hadn’t been fighting.
"As long as you’re not fighting, that’s good. My condition is nothing to worry about. I’ve had it for so many years, I’m used to it."
’She felt she’d lived to a ripe old age; even if she were to die now, it wouldn’t be a big deal.’
’It was just that she had two children she couldn’t bear to leave behind.’
"You’re the most important person in the world to Eve. If anything happened to you, she’d be heartbroken. And I couldn’t bear to see that."
After he spoke, Julian Sterling took a box of what appeared to be nutritional supplements from his suit pocket and placed it in Chloe Shea’s hand.
"What’s this?"
"It’s a nutritional supplement I had someone bring back from abroad for Eve. She’s often so busy she neglects her health. Even if I give this to her, she won’t take it regularly, so I have to trouble you to keep an eye on her and make sure she takes it. She needs to build up her strength."
