Chapter 121: Chapter 121: He Cannot Leave

Florence Morgan’s tone, which had started out somewhat admonishing, had become laced with anxiety.

"I’m desperate, Mom! If those two really get together, I will use every means at my disposal, regardless of the consequences."

Without a doubt, it was a threat.

And he was threatening his own mother!

Julian Sterling wouldn’t be doing this if he hadn’t been backed into a corner.

By now, Julian couldn’t think of any other way to win Evelyn Grant back. This was all he had left.

"Be reasonable!"

"Mom, I can’t be reasonable. I’m going to go crazy! Do you understand? I’m waiting at home all by myself, praying for Evelyn to come back, just hoping she’ll show up! I... I’ve fallen in love with her. I’ve really fallen in love with her!"

By the end, Julian’s voice was choked with sobs.

He didn’t know what else he could do. At this point, all he had left was to speak the truth, to confess what was in his heart.

"Sigh... What a tragic connection."

Florence Morgan was filled with regret. Why hadn’t she been more cautious when she decided on the marriage between her two children?

And now, it was too late to start over.

"I’m sorry... Mom, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to threaten you. I just love her so much."

"You’re my own flesh and blood; of course I know. I’m well aware that after spending so many years together, day in and day out, feelings were bound to develop. It’s just that you didn’t understand your own heart at first! But son, I have to remind you: from now on, you must think things through before you act. You can’t be so impulsive!"

If Julian hadn’t been so adamant that Evelyn Grant was the one who caused Jane Jacobs’s death, then none of this would have ever happened!

He was just too reckless, too impulsive.

Florence Morgan had never worried about this before, because she always thought her elder son was too level-headed to do something like this.

But as it turned out, he had done exactly that.

"Yes. This will be the only time I make this mistake. I promise I won’t make you and Dad worry again. From now on, I’ll live a good life with Evelyn."

"As long as you understand."

The call ended. Julian lowered his hand and let out a deep sigh.

His mother was his last hope now.

...

After hanging up on his brother, Ryan Sterling couldn’t sleep.

He glanced at the woman sleeping beside him. Her presence brought him a sense of peace, yet it was tinged with insecurity.

The feeling of having the woman he loved constantly coveted by another man was agonizing for Ryan Sterling.

He couldn’t stake his claim and warn others away, but he also couldn’t ignore Evelyn’s feelings and just take her for himself.

Ryan let out a soft sigh, one hand gently stroking her long hair.

He loved the feeling of having her by his side.

Even if it meant living with a constant sense of anxiety.

Suddenly, Evelyn turned over in her sleep, her delicate brows furrowing slightly.

Ryan immediately sat up to check on her. He only relaxed and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that she had settled back into a peaceful sleep.

Once he was sure Evelyn was all right, he quietly slipped out of the bedroom and went to the study to deal with some work.

A lot of things at the company had been delayed since his return.

Ryan did his best to handle the most urgent matters from his overseas office. As for the rest...

It would just have to wait.

The moment he turned on his computer, a flood of files came through from his colleagues.

He’d long known he couldn’t keep putting things off...

But he couldn’t leave.
