"Yeah, I won’t be so foolish anymore. Don’t worry."

No matter how much she loved him, she had to have some personal boundaries, some shred of self-respect left for herself.

Julian Sterling could ignore her because he didn’t love her; she could endure that, she could wait.

But she couldn’t accept Julian Sterling not trusting her. More than that, she couldn’t accept that he actually wanted her dead!

That wasn’t a question of love anymore. That was hate.

Evelyn Grant never imagined that the man she had loved for so many years, the man she had cherished and cared for so meticulously, would end up hating her.

"Hearing you say that makes me feel a little better! Sis, don’t try to hide everything from me anymore. You can hide things from our mom—I get it, her health isn’t good—but don’t hide things from me too! I’m grown up now. I can protect you!"

She smiled. After telling him, she actually felt a great sense of relief and ease.

’I never expected my little brother to be so mature.’

"Okay. Thank you, Alex."

"We’re brother and sister. What’s there to thank me for? Anyway, I’ll let you get back to it. Remember to talk to Mom about seeing a doctor."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Evelyn Grant let out a sigh of relief.

Just as she was about to call her mother, a call came in from Florence Morgan.

She froze. ’I really don’t want to answer it.’

After all...

She could pretty much guess what the call was about.

But it wouldn’t be right to just hang up on her.

Evelyn Grant just waited for the phone to stop ringing, thinking she could just pretend she hadn’t heard it. But a few seconds later, Florence Morgan called again!

This time, she felt something was off.

’This persistence from my former mother-in-law... she’s clearly determined to get ahold of me today!’

’But what could it be about?’

’Could it be... that she already knows about me and Ryan Sterling?!’

It wasn’t that Evelyn Grant was afraid of anything else; she was terrified that Florence Morgan would be relentless and eventually take the matter to her own mother. If that happened, things would spiral out of control!

She had hesitated before telling her brother the truth, but telling her mother was absolutely out of the question!

Pressing her lips together tightly, Evelyn Grant finally tapped the answer button.

"Hello? Mom..."

Evelyn Grant still hadn’t switched back to calling her Ms. Morgan.

Florence Morgan chuckled a few times before speaking. "Eve, what are you up to? You must be off work by now, right?"

"I have to work overtime today, so I’m not done yet. I’m still at the law firm. What’s up?"

She could tell Florence Morgan seemed to want to meet, so she quickly made that excuse.

’If she’s just going to try to persuade me over the phone, I can just listen for a bit. No big deal.’

’But in person? That’s a different story!’

"Oh, I see. Well, work is important. I don’t have anything major to discuss, I just wanted to check on you. Ever since you and Julian had that... falling out, we haven’t had a chance to talk privately! Eve, no matter what happens, you can’t forget the friendship between our two families!"

Florence Morgan’s words sounded more like a subtle reminder to Evelyn Grant about the relationship between Ryan Sterling and Julian Sterling!

They were biological brothers!

If they had an ugly falling out over a woman, countless people would be waiting to watch the drama unfold.

"I won’t forget. Don’t worry."
