Chapter 108: Chapter 108: What’s Broken is Broken

No matter how desperate Evelyn Grant was for money, she would never do something like this.

She always remembered those who had been good to her.

Even if that person eventually did something that made her unhappy, she wouldn’t erase all the good they had done before.

Mr. Ford was unwilling to give up and tried to persuade Evelyn Grant further.

"I can give you a higher legal fee. As long as you’re willing, everything is negotiable."

"It’s not about the money. I’m truly sorry, Mr. Ford. I have to follow the firm’s arrangements. As for anything else, I can only apologize for the trouble this has caused. I’m sure the firm will offer you a satisfactory compensation plan. I have a meeting to get to now, so I’ll just say that I wish you the best of luck with your case. Goodbye."

After hanging up, Evelyn Grant breathed a sigh of relief.

It was the first time she had ever encountered a situation where a lawyer was suddenly replaced mid-case, and she hadn’t known what to say to the client.

Normally, a law firm would never do something like that.

It was very damaging to their reputation.

However, Evelyn Grant wholeheartedly agreed with what Assistant Wright had said earlier today.

’It’s true, for some reason, this Mr. Ford was insistent on meeting me alone.’

’From the sound of it, he seemed to be deliberately looking for excuses to ask me out privately.’

’If something were to happen, or if I was in danger, what would I do then...?’

After what had happened with Julian Sterling, Evelyn Grant was, to some extent, traumatized.

If Ryan Sterling hadn’t shown up in time that day, she couldn’t imagine what she would have faced.

Things would have become much more complicated...

At least she and Julian Sterling were divorced now.

Although he was still pestering her, a clean break was a clean break.

And Evelyn Grant had no intention of going back.

But if things had progressed to *that* point with Julian Sterling, nothing would be so clear-cut now.

...

To make the act convincing, Mr. Shaw actually found some recent procedural gaps the firm needed to address and brought them up with his lawyers.

He had never specifically called a meeting for this kind of thing before.

But this time, it served as the perfect excuse.

"From now on, any form of gossip is strictly forbidden within this firm! If I find out, you’ve all seen what the consequences will be!"

Mr. Shaw’s face was grim as he spoke, his tone severe. He then glanced up at the others around the conference table.

Evelyn Grant kept her head down, not daring to look up.

It wasn’t that she had a guilty conscience, but she felt Mr. Shaw was saying this mainly because of what had happened with her.

Everyone else in the firm knew it too.

As the person at the center of it, she had to keep a low profile to avoid suspicion. She didn’t want people thinking she had badmouthed someone, prompting Mr. Shaw to set this new rule.

After the meeting ended, Evelyn Grant was about to head back to her office when she ran into two colleagues.

She was about to greet them, but they quickly hurried away, as if they were afraid of her.

Evelyn Grant furrowed her delicate brows, an indescribable feeling washing over her.

’If only I could go back to that day and just pretend I hadn’t heard any of the gossip.’

’Things wouldn’t have escalated to this point.’

’It feels like everyone at the firm is scared of me.’

Walking into her office, she glanced down at her phone and noticed a missed call from her younger brother.

Her phone had been on silent during the meeting, so she hadn’t heard it ring.

Evelyn Grant quickly called him back.

"Alex, did you need me for something?"
