Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Don’t Offend Ryan Sterling

’Besides, with the real boss backing him, what did Mr. Shaw have to fear?’

He just had to make sure not to offend Ryan Sterling; everything else was irrelevant.

"Does your firm even want to stay in business? You changed my lawyer without my permission?" Right now, Mr. Ford was more terrified than anyone of losing Evelyn Grant as his counsel.

But he couldn’t say that outright, so he could only stubbornly refuse the change.

"Ms. Grant’s current health condition makes her unfit to continue handling cases. This is especially true given your private requests to meet with her. I made this decision to ensure the safety of our firm’s lawyers, and I hope you can understand, Mr. Ford."

As a seasoned lawyer himself, Mr. Shaw naturally knew how to communicate with clients.

You had to pin the fault on the other party first. That way, if a legal dispute ever arose, you would at least have a defense in court.

"I was just discussing the case details! Besides, it was Ms. Grant who suggested I settle. Shouldn’t I be able to talk that over with my own lawyer? What did I hire her for, then?"

"Then you should be communicating with Ms. Grant during business hours. But you’ve been insisting on private meetings with a female lawyer. That’s... not exactly appropriate, is it? If anything were to happen, our firm would be liable, and that’s a liability I can’t afford. Furthermore, Ms. Grant is genuinely unwell. I can either assign a male lawyer to your case free of charge, or I can give you a full refund plus compensation. The choice is yours."

With that, he had essentially shut down every possible counter-argument.

If Mr. Ford wanted to sue, the worst that could happen was the firm paying him off.

If he didn’t want to go that route, his only option was to accept the new lawyer.

"You! You’re just throwing your weight around!"

"We’re making a reasonable arrangement. I hope you understand, Mr. Ford."

"I don’t understand!" Mr. Ford grew frantic. "I don’t agree to a different lawyer. I want Ms. Grant! I only trust her to win my case!"

Mr. Shaw felt there was no point in continuing the conversation.

So he cut it short. "Why don’t you think it over and give me a call back."

"..."

The call ended, but before Mr. Shaw could even breathe a sigh of relief, Evelyn Grant was knocking on his door.

He raised a hand to rub the bridge of his nose, steadied himself, then put on a smile and went to open the door.

"Ms. Grant?"

"I just got a notification from the firm’s system. Has the lawyer on Mr. Ford’s divorce case been changed?"

Evelyn Grant had been stunned when she saw it.

’She cared so much about this case and had poured her heart and soul into it. To suddenly be taken off it was just... hard to accept.’

"Yes." Mr. Shaw nodded, admitting it directly. "Our firm has another lawyer who is better suited for this case. We have to think about what’s best for the firm, too."

"But... I’ve been on this case for so long. If you felt I wasn’t a good fit, you could have at least told me first." Evelyn Grant was confused and a little annoyed.

But she couldn’t show it in front of Mr. Shaw.

After all, he had always treated her well and looked out for her. Evelyn Grant just couldn’t bring herself to suddenly lash out at him.

"Ms. Grant, please, don’t be angry. I know you’ve put a lot of effort into this case, and I know you’re a responsible lawyer. But you have to understand, as the head of the firm, I have to consider the bigger picture. How about this? I’ll give you an even better case. What do you say?"
