I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 101: An Even More Complicated Relationship
Chapter 101: Chapter 101: An Even More Complicated Relationship
Evelyn Grant was quite perceptive.
So when Mr. Shaw’s personal assistant came to deliver a file to her himself, she knew something was off.
"Assistant Wright, is the... receptionist out today?"
’This was usually a job for the young woman at the front desk!’
’Besides, even if she was out, it wouldn’t fall to Mr. Shaw’s assistant to do it! The firm had security guards and plenty of interns!’
"The receptionist is busy with other things. Mr. Shaw said that the cases Ms. Grant is handling are quite important, so he told me to come and lend a hand."
’The cases she was handling were important?’
Evelyn Grant quickly wracked her brain, trying to remember if any of her recent court cases or newly acquired contracts were major cases of special interest to the firm.
’Apparently...’
’...not.’
"I don’t have anything that needs extra help. If you have other things to do, you don’t need to go out of your way for me!"
Evelyn Grant was more worried about sparking new rumors about her and Mr. Shaw around the firm.
’After all, the personal assistant to a firm leader entering and exiting her office—who wouldn’t read into that?’
"It’s all for work. I’m just carrying out my orders! Mr. Shaw wants to get all the firm’s current cases wrapped up as soon as possible, which is why he sent me. Don’t read too much into it. We’re all just working stiffs here."
Assistant Wright gave Evelyn Grant no chance to refuse. He had already started moving a computer in and was getting ready to work.
At this point, if Evelyn Grant said anything else, it would look like she was defying a direct assignment from a superior.
With no other choice, she could only put her head down and get back to her own work.
The client from her divorce case had originally agreed to a private settlement, but he’d suddenly changed his mind! Now he wouldn’t agree to anything. Even with the other party making concessions, he refused to finalize the divorce.
So now, the situation was even more of a mess.
Evelyn Grant made several calls to the client before he finally picked up.
"Hello? Mr. Ford, this is your attorney, Evelyn Grant. Regarding the settlement the court mentioned, would you like to discuss the details with me again? We can figure out what your objective is, and then I can go speak with the plaintiff on your behalf."
"You want to discuss the details with me?" Mr. Ford hesitated. It sounded like he was with someone, as Evelyn could hear the rustling of fabric on his end.
"Yes! You’re my client. I need to base my negotiations with the court on your wishes."
"Well... it’s hard to explain everything over the phone. Why don’t we meet in person? If you’re worried, you can pick the restaurant."
It wasn’t uncommon for a client to request a meeting.
However, Evelyn Grant usually held such meetings at the firm. After all, as a woman, it wasn’t ideal for her to meet a male client alone.
Mr. Ford quickly added, "I don’t really like the atmosphere at your firm. It feels oppressive. This whole divorce is stressing me out, you know? So I’d rather not discuss things there."
"I understand. In that case... shall we meet at a café for afternoon tea?"
As she spoke, Evelyn Grant was already checking her schedule.
But before she could finish checking her availability, Assistant Wright suddenly spoke up from the side. "Meeting a client today won’t be possible. Mr. Shaw said there’s an important meeting this afternoon that you have to attend."
"Huh?" Evelyn Grant froze. "I didn’t hear anything about that..."
"Then he must have forgotten to notify you. Me telling you is the same thing, isn’t it?" Assistant Wright smiled. "You should reschedule with your client for another day."
