Chapter 698: The Ferocious Child

Seeing the man approach, the boy’s eyes turned vicious. He shook his head, baring his teeth.

Skinny Monkey jumped, not daring to get any closer. He lowered his voice. "Hey kids, you haven’t eaten in days, have you? Brother Pockface wants to take you in as his sons. If you go with him, you’ll have food to eat."

The boy lunged forward, teeth bared.

Skinny Monkey flinched and stumbled backward.

When he saw the man back away, the boy retreated to the corner, his gaze fierce and wary.

"Son of a bitch!" Pockface Qi cursed. He rolled up his sleeves and strode forward.

Skinny Monkey quickly moved to block him again. "Brother Pockface, don’t get angry. Take it slow."

"Get out of my way! Skinny Monkey, it’s been a few years. How’d you get so damn indecisive?" Pockface Qi swung his arm, sending Skinny Monkey flying.

Skinny Monkey staggered and fell in the middle of the street, drawing the attention of many onlookers. All eyes turned toward the side of the road.

"Still causing trouble, Skinny Monkey?"

"Aren’t you afraid the City Lord will lock you up for eight or ten years?"

The onlookers’ voices were full of amusement and teasing.

Most of Dayu City’s current residents were outsiders. With very few locals left, almost no one recognized Pockface Qi.

"No, it’s not me..." Skinny Monkey was a coward. He hunched his shoulders and looked at Pockface Qi. "Brother Pockface, let’s just go back for now..."

Pockface Qi’s attention was fixed on the children by the wall. He paid Skinny Monkey no mind, walking right up and reaching for the older boy holding the swaddled infant.

The moment he reached out, the older boy seized his arm and sank his teeth into it.

"AARGH!" Pockface Qi shrieked in pain.

The boy’s bite was savage. Blood immediately trickled from his mouth and dripped onto the ground.

"Son of a bitch, let the fuck go!" Pockface Qi shoved the boy’s head with his free hand, but the boy’s jaw was locked tight.

Aunt Wang, standing nearby, was terrified. ’To dare to bite Pockface Qi... this child isn’t going to make it out alive.’

Ye Qianning still hadn’t made a move. She remained on the sidelines, observing the children. ’The oldest boy must be about fourteen or fifteen. I can’t see his face clearly, but his fierce eyes are the most striking feature.

’They’re eyes filled with hatred. This boy must be carrying some heavy burden.

’The baby in his arms is quiet, not making a sound. I can sense its breathing, but it’s very faint. From the way the boy is holding it, the baby can’t be more than a year old.

’The swaddling clothes are grimy, but when the boy grabbed Pockface Qi’s arm, I saw a bit of the fabric from the baby’s inner garments. It’s satin, which is not something a common family could afford.

’Behind him, another child, maybe five or six years old, is huddled in the corner. His face is a mask of fear and anxiety, and his eyes are glued to the older boy.’

"You son of a bitch, you’re asking to die!" Unable to push the boy off, Pockface Qi was now thoroughly enraged. He pulled a dagger from his belt and swung it at the back of the boy’s neck.

"WAAAAH!"

The sight of the dagger seemed to be some kind of trigger for the child in the corner, who burst out crying with a loud wail.

Just as the dagger was about to strike the boy’s neck, a sharp pain shot through Pockface Qi’s wrist. The dagger clattered to the ground.

"AARGH!"

Pockface Qi screamed.

The boy gave a powerful tug, wrenching his head to the side. A bloody piece of flesh was clamped in his mouth.

He had actually torn off a chunk of flesh.

An uproar went through the crowd.

Skinny Monkey’s face went white with terror. He rushed forward to support his boss. "Brother Pockface! Brother Pockface, are you alright?"

"You son of a bitch, do I look fucking okay to you?!" Sweat dripped from Pockface Qi’s brow as he writhed in pain. "Aargh... It fucking hurts! It’s killing me..."

’If the city guards show up, we’re screwed.’
