I Am Zeus
Chapter 421: Two Claims
They established a camp on the broken shelf above the mouth of the canyon, out of the line of the worst ash wind and within distance of a clear opening should another pack come up the road.
No one slept immediately. Binding wounds, cleaning weapons, the two tokens in Zeus’s possession lay heavy in their differing ways: Nyxara’s dark seal taken from the watch-post, Vespera’s blood-smeared disk from the floor of the canyon. Athena noted both on every pass of her hand near them. She made no comment yet. Silence was its own weight.
Nyxara finished resetting a perimeter charm and wiped her blade of serpent oil. Vespera settled cross-legged opposite the low fire, her hooked weapon across her knees, the crimson wraps darkened with ash and drying blood. They had fought the same battle hours ago. That did not equal softness between them.
"You set a claim token on him quickly," Nyxara observed.
Vespera did not look up from her work. "You planted your mouth on him more quickly."
Sun Wukong exhaled a laugh that might have been a wheeze and found the back of his throat suddenly occupied with the thought of distant darkness. Poseidon muttered into his water flask. Loki appeared delighted. Hades stared into the fire as if the conversation itself was a different kind of battlefield he had no intention of joining.
Athena’s voice cut through the tension. "If this is a matter of men claiming over dogs, declare it so now so we can leave both of you to rot in this canyon."
Nyxara’s smile lacked warmth. "Threshold custom does not follow Continuum manners. Strength. Appetite. Designated contact. Interest is not assumed a virtue."
"And neither do we share when the carrier is still unproven in the deeper layers," Vespera added, her gaze lifting to Zeus. "You survived me in the lane. That is relevant. Nyxara claimed first ground. That is also relevant. Neither designation owns your survival."
Zeus set his jaw. "Good. Because I am not bartering myself as a toll road."
"Then stop treating both tokens as if their meaning is not known to you," Vespera said.
Nyxara stood. "He knows. He is weighing if Threshold women are blades or hunger. He is correct on both counts."
The atmosphere between the women grew taut, scarcely audible, physical. Nyxara’s hand hovered near her spear. Vespera’s thumb traced the inner curve of her hook. Residual force under Zeus’s skin prickled as if the Threshold itself approved the test and wanted to see it continue.
"Enough," Zeus said.
He stood between them before the tension could become a drawn blade. Up close, both women carried the scent of ash, blood, and the heat of combat. Nyxara regarded him as if she already knew the geography of his body. Vespera studied him as if she intended to chart it without asking for permission twice.
"You demand custom," Zeus said. "Then custom without slaughter surrounding my people by this fire. If you are testing claim pressure, place it on me. Not on them."
Vespera’s lips curved. "Gladly."
She moved first.
The contact was brutal, intentional, and public enough that no one could mistake it for anything but. Vespera fisted the front of his gear, kissed him like a challenge, and shoved him back against the rock wall at the edge of the shelf. Nyxara’s eyes gleamed with temper and something colder than jealousy.
"You take my window," Nyxara said.
"You had yours," Vespera replied, not looking away from Zeus. "Now I test if he survives me the way he survived the canyon."
Athena turned her back with controlled precision and ordered the others to expand perimeter watch. Poseidon emitted a curse. Hermes dragged Sun Wukong with him before commentary could begin. Hades departed without a word. Kratos lingered only long enough to confirm no blades would be drawn before following Odin into the dark.
Nyxara did not depart.
She remained at the fireline, watching, jaw set, as Vespera stripped away enough of Zeus’s gear to reach skin and turned the test from challenge to requirement. There was little gentleness in it. Vespera wanted proof in body as well as blood. She bit, held, and drove the pace until residual force rose sharply under Zeus’s ribs. He met her, not passive, one hand braced on stone, the other locked at her back, answering force with force.
Nyxara’s presence added weight to the air. She did not join. She did not stop it. She watched as a warden might, assessing if the carrier would hold under a second claim.
When release came, residual force peaked beyond the camp charms.
For a brief, keen moment Zeus was not only in his body.
He saw through desire the way he had seen through combat in the continuity flashes before: a vast attention, focused and deliberate, watching from far below the threshold of Ashen. Not House. Not Nyxara. Not Vespera. The source of the continuity itself, observing if the seed held under the pressure of appetite and power. No face. No mercy. Only assessment.
Then it closed.
Zeus returned to rough breathing, stone at his shoulders, Vespera still pressed against him, and Nyxara standing three paces back with unreadable eyes.
Vespera leaned her forehead briefly to his collarbone, then pushed off and resecured her wraps with steady hands. "He held."
"He held," Nyxara agreed, the words costing her something. "For now."
Zeus sorted his gear and found his voice. "If either of you uses me to mark the other while my people are under threat, the tokens end. Both of them."
Vespera’s smile was narrow and genuine. "Then keep surviving. Tokens are easy. Coherence is not."
Nyxara came closer, close enough that the previous claim still hung in the air between all three of them. "Deeper layer opens at dawn marks. Gallery roads. Memory traps. Things that wear dead faces. If you are still upright by then, both our marks may keep local predators guessing."
Athena arrived at the edge of firelight, her expression hard, her features controlled. She took in the scene in one scan and filed it away behind command focus.
"Perimeter is set," she said. "If the personal trials are concluded for this hour, we require sleep rotations and a path through those gallery roads before this shelf becomes an additional grave."
Zeus gave a single nod. Residual force still hummed under his skin, quieter now, marked by combat and the two women who had staked their claims openly.
Above the canyon, Ashen Threshold wind shifted like it was listening.
Below it, the next roads waited with dead faces and no interest in who had kissed whom beside a fire.
