I Am Zeus
Chapter 420: Trial Under Fire
They could not hold the rise.
The ash-serpent pack surged in an undulating wave, their wiry bodies twisting and slithering through vents, leaping up the black stone lip, their jaws unhinging into smoking gobbets. Nyxara’s post seals held for less than a minute under full weight. One support beam cracked. A lantern went out in a spray of pale fire. Zeus took a serpent in the neck with a carefully controlled burst of residual force and felt the Threshold return the gesture with interest.
"Off the rise!" Nyxara yelled. "Canyon cuts! If we stay, they bury us in the den!"
They broke out and down in an uneven fighting line to open ash weather. The ground fell away beyond the post into a labyrinth of canyons, their walls a ribbed mosaic of old judgment slag and serpent trails. The pack came hard on their heels. Bigger figures loomed lower in the canyon throat - not serpents, but upright forms of fallen verdict plates and crown fragments bound together.
Athena saw them first. "Constructs below."
"I see them," Odin said, "but they only wake when the packs drive prey into their lanes."
There was no easy run. The nine and Nyxara plunged into the nearest cut under a rain of ash and broken scale. Poseidon carved a trench across one channel and bought them a breath. Kratos used the far wall as a battering ram, slamming a pair of serpents into paste. Hades pulled a construct’s legs out from under it and let the ground do the insult. Sun Wukong laughed once, wild and bright, as he sprung a serpent’s spine and cracked another skull on the way down.
Then the canyon split under them.
A judgment construct drove both arms into the path and tore the cut apart. Ash-glass gave way. The group went up and down unwillingly.
"Left!" Athena ordered.
"Right still open!" Hermes shouted from the other side.
Zeus failed to hold center as the floor dropped. He, Athena, Nyxara, Kratos, and Hades tumbled into the deeper right cut. Poseidon, Sun Wukong, Loki, Odin, and Hermes were forced left past a curtain of falling slag.
"Keep moving!" Zeus bellowed across the space. "Join at the lower mouth!"
Serpents poured after both lines.
The right cut became a meat grinder. Narrow walls. Poor footing. Constructs with half faces and execution blades holding space at every turn. Zeus gave up trying to fight nicely and focused on keeping people breathing. Residual force licked up his arms in short measured bursts. Nyxara fought like the canyon was her home, each seal-strike carving a niche into local ash-law for the enemy to stumble over. Athena kept close to Zeus’s side, spear driving into seams of construct plate. Kratos carved space with sheer force of will. Hades turned one corridor into a killing jar and clamped down both ends until the contents stopped twitching.
They were still being driven.
A three-headed serpent cleared the wall above Athena and came down. Zeus was half a step too far to catch her.
A woman in crimson-dark Threshold wraps hit the serpent sideways in mid-fall, driving a hooked blade through all three skull hinges in a rising motion. She rode the corpse down and landed in a crouch to cut the next beast’s underjaw clean off.
She did not ask who they were.
She simply entered the fight and made the lane survivable.
"Push forward," she snapped. "If you stagnate, the canyon feeds you to the lower court."
Nyxara bared her teeth in something like recognition. "Vespera."
"Later," Vespera said, and kicked a construct’s knee the wrong way until it went down.
With her in the line, the right group picked up ground. Vespera fought rough and efficient, never wasting a movement, always making space for whoever would come next. She covered Athena once without comment. She used Zeus once as a springboard to clear a high serpent, palm hard against his bicep, already gone before he could say anything. Residual force jumped at the contact and she felt it, eyes flicking to him with keen interest even as she gutted another foe.
They broke into the lower mouth of the canyon at the same time the left group broke through from the opposite wall. Poseidon was bloodied and angry. Sun Wukong had a new rent in his sleeve and a grin like fire. Hermes was limping and muttering potential routes under his breath. Odin’s spear dripped ash-oil. Loki looked annoyed anyone had surprised him at all.
The remaining serpents thinned. The last construct tried to rise and Hades folded it into silence.
For a moment the only sound was rough breathing and ash falling like dirty snow.
Vespera cleaned her hooked blade on a dead serpent’s flank and looked the nine over properly. Her gaze lingered on Athena first, then on Zeus longer.
"Nyxara collects interesting carriers," she said. "She always has. Most of them break in the canyons and save everyone the trouble."
Nyxara leaned on her spear, drawing breath. "This one has not broken yet."
"I can see that." Vespera came closer to Zeus, close enough that the heat of the fight still came off her skin. "I prefer partners who can survive me. Pretty survivors are common. Coherent ones are not."
Athena’s grip on her spear tightened. "He is not a Threshold trophy rack."
"Everything that enters Ashen Threshold is tested like one," Vespera said, not unkind, not soft. "Combat. Appetite. Loyalty under pressure. If that offends Continuum manners, leave. If it does not, keep walking."
She took Zeus’s hand without asking permission, cut her thumb on her own blade, and pressed a blood-marked token into his palm. The mark burned once, then sank into a dark metal disk etched with her sign.
"My claim token," Vespera said. "Not ownership. Notice. Local things that respect my den will think twice. Local things that hate me will come faster. Both are useful information."
Zeus closed his hand around the disk. He already carried Nyxara’s seal token from the post. Two marks now. Two women who had put hands on his survival in different ways and did not pretend it was pure charity.
Poseidon eyed Vespera warily. "Is every road in this place going to end with someone bleeding on us and calling it welcome?"
"Yes," Nyxara and Vespera said together.
Sun Wukong barked a laugh. "Finally, honesty."
Far down the canyon, deeper Threshold weather shifted. Not serpents this time. A wider pressure, like a gate inhaled.
Athena looked from the tokens in Zeus’s hand to the dark ahead. "Then we move before the next welcome arrives."
Zeus nodded once, body aching, residual force still hot from battle and the fresh blood-mark in his fist.
The first layer was no longer theory.
It was teeth, ash, and women who made their interest as plain as their blades.
