I Am Not A Goblin Slayer
Chapter 992 - 480: Reversed Public Opinion
However, since it was already late, Gauss didn’t venture out to handle his business that night. Instead, he simply rested at the camp.
The next morning.
When he woke up, things were still quiet. Perhaps the death of the Extraordinary Centaur had served as a stark warning to the upper echelons of the Green Dragon Army. Terrified that they might be the next to die, they all held their ground. Aside from constant harassment by low-level monsters, no large-scale attacks were launched. This was actually a good thing, as it gave the human soldiers and Adventurers more time to rest. When Gauss stepped out, he could clearly see that after a day of rest, the people on the streets looked much more spirited.
He heard that in previous battles, although the Green Dragon Army would settle down somewhat after a large-scale siege ended, the number of medium and small-scale skirmishes had been far greater than what occurred yesterday. This was perhaps another invisible contribution Gauss had made. It was exactly as he expected.
Deep within the lush forest.
The upper ranks of the Green Dragon Army were indeed gripped by an inexplicable panic. The Extraordinary Demon Lords who considered themselves equal to or slightly weaker than the Extraordinary Centaur Isetor were walking on eggshells. They constantly used their spies within the army to monitor the slightest movement, terrified that the Four Great Generals would suddenly seek them out and dump the heavy burden that had been assigned to the deceased Isetor onto them.
In fact, before the incident occurred the day before yesterday, they had caught wind that the Four Great Generals were discussing which Lord to send to assassinate that human. Some of the Lords had even been tempted by the opportunity. However, after the generals deliberated, the mission was ultimately handed to the least experienced centaur, Isetor, giving it a chance to earn glory. Some Lords had been quite resentful of this blatant favoritism. But now, they were overwhelmingly thankful that Isetor had been the scapegoat.
Killing an Extraordinary Demon so quickly was no easy feat. It proved that the human was incredibly powerful and definitely possessed some special burst technique to maximize his offensive capabilities. This type of enemy was the most terrifying because there was no way to predict what hidden trump cards he still held.
A few Extraordinary Magical Beasts coincidentally gathered around the edge of the camp. Their eyes drifted toward the distant location of the Four Great Generals as they conversed in hushed tones.
"The bosses are having a meeting again."
"Are they looking for another guy to kill that Gauss?"
"If this mission falls on your head..." The smallest yet most cunning-looking Extraordinary Jackal-Wolf Person turned to tease the towering Giant Demon Ulock beside it.
"Ahem... I... I’m not going. I haven’t been feeling well lately," the massive Extraordinary Giant Demon beside it shook its head vigorously. It was perfectly happy being alive and had no desire to provoke that Grim Reaper. It wouldn’t even mind facing off against other human Extraordinary generals; after all, their burst power wasn’t nearly as strong. Even if it couldn’t defeat them, the worst-case scenario was fleeing with its tail between its legs, not losing its life.
"That’s not up to you, Ulock," the Jackal-Wolf Person shook its head. "If your boss Morga comes looking for you..."
Morga was the Giant Demon General, one of the Four Great Generals of the Green Dragon Army, and the leader of all the Giant Demons in the entire Jade Forest. By blood, Morga was even a distant relative of the Extraordinary Giant Demon currently standing before them.
"I... I... Anyway, I’m not going!"
The mere mention of Morga’s name clearly made the Extraordinary Giant Demon feel a bit guilty and anxious. If the low-level Demons, who feared it like a god of death, saw its cowardly demeanor now, their jaws would probably hit the floor.
The Jackal-Wolf Person’s gaze shifted back toward the central camp where the Four Great Generals were located.
"They might already be discussing it right now. I heard the generals were reflecting on things yesterday, and they concluded that Isetor just couldn’t take a beating. They figured that if they sent a burly, thick-skinned big guy, the outcome might be entirely different." The Jackal-Wolf Person brought its gaze back, letting it linger on the Extraordinary Giant Demon’s massive, heavily muscled frame.
Although it felt that if they fought to the death, it would definitely be the one to survive, it had to admit that the Giant Demon’s physical toughness far exceeded that of ordinary races. The Extraordinary Giant Demon was clearly aware of its own advantages as well. At the Jackal-Wolf Person Lord’s mention of this, the expression on its face instantly stiffened.
"I—I need to go talk to the boss."
It no longer cared about losing face and strode toward the generals’ camp, terrified that the wretched Jackal-Wolf Person’s jinx might come true.
The other Extraordinary Demons simply watched the retreating back of the Extraordinary Giant Demon, then glanced at the calm-faced Jackal-Wolf Person Lord, chuckling coldly in silence. They naturally saw through the act—the Jackal-Wolf Person Lord was intentionally goading the Giant Demon into fishing for information. However, since this benefited them, they kept their mouths shut.
In the center of the camp, the four Demon generals of the Green Dragon Army were gathered together, talking. However, the topic of their discussion was completely different from what the Extraordinary Demons outside were worrying about.
Suddenly, the Giant Demon General Morga looked toward the entrance. A sneaky figure was hovering in the distance, trying to use the camp’s fortifications to hide its body. Yet, how could a massive frame taller than a city wall be easily concealed?
Noticing the questioning glances from the other three monster generals, Morga suddenly felt thoroughly embarrassed. It immediately shouted, "Get your ass in here, Ulock!"
Hearing the furious roar, the Extraordinary Giant Demon Ulock instantly shuddered. Then, like a child caught doing something wrong, it meekly walked through the main gates.
