I Am Not A Goblin Slayer
Chapter 1014 - 488: Night Battle, Breakthrough
Magic Missiles zipped through the chaotic battlefield at high speeds as if they had eyes of their own, ultimately swallowing their targets. In the areas where the Jackal-Wolf People were relatively densely packed, the Thunder Summoning Skill and Dagger Cloud were reaping lives in droves. As for the monsters immediately surrounding Gauss, their fate was both the most miserable and the most fortunate. Their lives were snuffed out in an instant—they felt no pain, but they also had no chance to struggle.
Gauss came to a halt. Scarlet blood dripped slowly along the textures of the pair of Platinum wings on his back, giving him an indescribably contradictory aura that made him look both divine and brutal. He glanced down. A single physical charge from him had crushed over a hundred elite Jackal-Wolf People cavalry. Every one of these creatures was a powerhouse capable of fighting ten against one and easily defeating ordinary demons. Yet, at this moment, they lay silently on the ground. Their blood soaked the earth, destined to become nutrients for the land.
Further away, the Jackal-Wolf People who witnessed this brutal slaughter tightened their grips on their reins, gulping hard down their coarse-maned throats. Ahead was Hell!
Further back behind the many Jackal-Wolf People cavalry, the Jackal-Wolf People Lord was also watching this scene. Seeing the tragic fate of one of its battalions in the distance, it felt even more grateful that it had chosen a battlefield far away from the human named Gauss. He could kill the Extraordinary Centaur, Isetor, so he could naturally kill it too. It still had at least that much self-awareness.
Gauss continued to slaughter the first wave of attacking Jackal-Wolf People cavalry, occasionally practicing the two Sixth-Circle Spells he had just learned. Under the effect of the [Demonic Hour] Talent, the proficiency of these two Spells was rapidly increasing. Because their levels were low enough, the experience he gained prioritized these two Spells. Soon, the proficiency levels of both Spells broke through to Lv. 2, leaving the introductory Lv. 1 stage behind.
Upon seeing the changes on his interface, Gauss quietly breathed a sigh of relief. Starting from Lv. 2, skills could barely be used in actual combat. They wouldn’t be like they were at Lv. 1, working only half the time.
But this cathartic slaughter did not last long. Soon, the second wave of attacks followed closely on its heels. In the sky, the flying Demon army followed closely, beginning to support the ground vanguard. The threat posed by these flying Demons was even greater than that of the Jackal-Wolf People cavalry. It was easy to understand why: ground combat fundamentally operated on a two-dimensional logic, but launching an attack against aerial targets meant facing an enemy with a much more flexible evasion space. They could dodge in any direction, and the inherent advantage of striking from a higher elevation could not be easily neutralized.
The human Griffin Knights began to take to the air. At the same time, the heavy ballistae and the few remaining Magic Cannons on the city walls tried to lock onto the large targets in the sky.
"Watch out for the fireballs overhead!"
"Dodge!"
"Dodge!"
On the city walls, Adventurers began to warn each other as scalding fireballs of various sizes fell from the sky. They were the attacks cast by monster Casters riding on the backs of wyverns.
The tumbling black spheres at their cores carried heatwaves of hundreds of degrees as they smashed into the city walls, rapidly blasting massive craters into the solid masonry. If they hit a human, even one clad in sturdy iron armor, the person and the Armor alike would be reduced to ash. Armor could only defend against low-to-medium power attacks; it was entirely useless against Spells of this caliber.
Gauss unleashed dozens of Missiles to preemptively shoot down a wave of the fiery rain, but the blast radius of the overhead Spells was simply too vast. Almost the entire front line of the battlefield was bathed in this magical bombardment from above. Magical shields rose over parts of the walls and bunkers. This was the activation of the Magic Arrays inscribed in the city defenses ahead of time.
"Take cover inside first!" Gauss gestured for the ordinary Adventurers not to take the attacks head-on. Most Professionals above Level 3 could shrug off this wave of attacks without fear, but low-level Adventurers lacked that capability.
As he spoke, his gaze locked onto the wyverns overhead. These guys were being a bit too arrogant.
"Dragon Roar Missile!"
Upon locking on, several Dragon Roar Missiles, deliberately imbued with the Precision Rule Power, roared out from the tip of Gauss’s staff. A few seconds later, those wyverns, along with the monster Shamans on their backs still holding their hands high in Casting, plummeted to the ground.
That was much quieter.
Immediately after, his line of sight began to lock onto other flying Demons within a radius of a few kilometers. Even though it was night, as long as any Caster dared to show their head, they would be met with a locked-on head-on strike from him. Gradually, the number of Spells raining down within a few kilometers around him rapidly decreased. It was unknown whether the airborne enemies had been completely wiped out by Gauss or were simply too terrified to show their faces.
Elsewhere on the battlefield, the humans who had withstood the first wave of attacks began to fight back. The Casting distance of the Demon Shamans was well within the range of the heavy ballistae. Compared to Magic Cannons, ballistae were much less powerful, but their advantage lay in their relatively cheap cost and ease of installation.
Long before, anticipating that the Green Dragon Army might launch a war tonight, Monroe and the others had issued orders to overhaul the existing ballistae. They also installed some of the spare ballistae from storage, greatly increasing their long-range strike capability. Even exchanging dozens of Crossbow Arrows for a single flying Demon was a huge profit. The Green Dragon Army’s flying Demon force was also an elite unit. Unlike the cannon fodder, killing these vital mainstays would represent a significant loss for them.
One flying Demon after another plummeted to the earth, either struck by arrows, blasted by Spells, or slashed down by Warriors who had taken to the sky using the Flying Skill. Some flying Demons also slipped through weak points in the defense, soaring over the city walls to launch attacks in the rear.
The previously hidden Dragon Worship Sect spies, upon seeing the flying Demons gliding over the camp and dropping monsters from above, excitedly emerged from the shadows to join the ranks of murder and arson. However, they had no intention of converging with those low-level Demons, as the ordinary low-level Demons would mistake them for the Human Alliance Army.
"Kill!"
In the blink of an eye, the flames of war spread rapidly across the vast areas inside and outside the city walls.
CLANG!!
On the wall, Albena, wielding a giant axe, effortlessly cleaved a giant python that had scaled the ramparts in half. She turned her head to glance at Aaliyah and Ying, who were not far away. The clones unleashed by Ying formed a tight guard around her and Aaliyah, continuously killing the monsters climbing the wall.
Aaliyah was perhaps one of the few in the Human Alliance Army to receive a nighttime buff. The moonlight tonight was exceptionally bright, doubling the power of her Moonlit Spells. Even the Silver Wolf Ulfen, who was constantly leaping around her, and Aik, who was leading the crows in high-speed flight through the air, had grown a size larger.
AWOOO!!!
Ulfen threw its head back and let out a roar, a smear of fresh blood still lingering on its snout. In front of it, the monsters that had just leaped over the battlements hadn’t even gotten a clear look at the situation on the wall before they turned to meet a pair of massive, brutal wolf eyes.
THUD!!
Ulfen lunged forward like a silver bullet. With a single swipe of its claws, several monsters were sent flying backward off the wall as if hit by a massive truck. They flew a dozen meters before crashing to pieces at the foot of the wall. The role an Elite Squad could play in a city defense battle could surpass that of hundreds or thousands of ordinary soldiers.
After the nearby flying Demons didn’t dare to show their faces, Gauss immediately shifted his strikes to the much larger ground monster forces. He needed to seize every moment to kill monsters and make himself stronger. For this reason, while other Extraordinary human powerhouses were adjusting their condition, restraining their attacks, and preparing to fight the Extraordinary Demons in top form, he was ruthlessly bombarding the Monster Legion with reckless abandon.
Suddenly, just as he raised his hand to conclude a dense volley of Casting, a different kind of notification seemed to flash in his peripheral vision amidst the multitude of kill prompts. He opened his interface. Sure enough, just a moment ago when he wasn’t paying attention, he had killed an Elite Demon he had never encountered before.
