I Am Not A Goblin Slayer

Chapter 1013 - 488: Night Battle, Breakthrough

  • Next Chapter

The attack from the first wave of the Jackal-Wolf People cavalry legion arrived swiftly.

"SWISH!"

"SWISH!"

A torrential storm of arrows and Spells fired in a volley from the city walls and watchtowers, hurtling toward the Jackal-Wolf People dire wolf cavalry. In past battles, a volley like this alone would have left behind at least a hundred corpses. However, when the arrows and Spells crossed the long distance and rained down, the resulting offensive was far less ideal than imagined.

It was as if the dire wolves could sniff out danger in advance. With just a few nimble bursts of speed and leaps, they easily dodged the incoming attacks. They were far too agile! Furthermore, during their high-speed evasions, the dire wolves avoided unnecessary collisions with one another. They continuously maintained their original formation while remaining ready to shift at a moment’s notice.

This was the true strength of canine Demons: formidable long-distance endurance running, highly developed group coordination, and a clear division of labor. Of course, the most crucial factor was that every single dire wolf mount in this cavalry was an Elite Demon. This made them physically stronger, and their Perception of danger, evasion skills, and explosive power far surpassed those of ordinary mounts.

"SWISH!"

While the dire wolves beneath them finished dodging the first wave of arrows, the Jackal-Wolf People Warriors riding them weren’t idle either. They drew their bows, nocked their arrows, and swiftly returned fire while riding. Soon, agile waves of arrows arched through the air in a parabolic trajectory, raining down upon the city walls.

"Raise shields!"

Before the arrows could hit, the captains of the various squads commanded their men to raise their shields above their heads for defense.

"THUD, THUD, THUD!"

A series of dull thuds echoed. Arrowheads continuously battered the sturdy surfaces of the thick Wooden Shields. Some even pierced deep into the wood, jolting the arms of the shield-bearing Warriors and sending waves of numbness through their limbs. The elite caliber of this vanguard—the first wave of Jackal-Wolf People cavalry—was lightyears ahead of the worthless monster cannon fodder they had faced before.

However, the Jackal-Wolf People cavalry’s arrogance didn’t last long. Soon, as the Jackal-Wolf People at the front swiftly swept along the city wall to harass the defenders, the descent of a Red Dragon instantly threw their ranks into chaos. It wasn’t that they didn’t know a Red Dragon was stationed here. But for a creature of this caliber, observing it from afar and feeling its overwhelming presence up close were two entirely different matters.

The first to panic were the dire wolves. One by one, they lost control like startled steeds, fleeing frantically in complete disorder as they desperately tried to evade the Red Dragon. In their sheer panic, many dire wolves even collided with each other. The powerful impact left the massive wolves dizzy and disoriented, flinging the Jackal-Wolf People Warriors from their saddles. They rolled several times across the ground before slowly climbing to their feet.

The commotion at the front quickly triggered a chain reaction that affected the dire wolf cavalry in the rear. Much like a stampede, the loss of control at a single critical point could cause the entire formation to lose its long-maintained, orderly discipline.

"SWISH!"

At that exact moment, a volley of arrows fired from the city walls pierced the bodies of numerous dire wolves and Jackal-Wolf People Warriors.

Gauss looked down from his vantage point. After glancing at his assigned defense sector and ensuring everyone was returning fire in an orderly manner, his figure vanished from the spot with a flicker. He also needed to rely on the effects of his Demonic Hour Talent to harvest low-level Demons for skill proficiency. His recently acquired 6th-tier Spells, Spiritual Prison and Splendid Light Ball, were still crying out to be fed.

The swift mobility of the Jackal-Wolf People only gave them an advantage when facing ordinary Adventurers. In front of the faster and stronger Gauss, they were so slow that their movements were riddled with flaws. The only thing he found regrettable was that the Jackal-Wolf People cavalry formation was relatively dispersed overall, leaving little room for his large-scale area-of-effect Spells to shine.

He surmised that this might be one of their standard cavalry formations, meant to mitigate casualties from concentrated fire. Furthermore, his presence here—and the devastating Fireball Technique he had previously unleashed on the battlefield—had undoubtedly left a profound impression on the Green Dragon Army, prompting them to deploy targeted countermeasures. Monsters in the real world weren’t like the practice dummies in games that only executed set programs. They could think, draw conclusions, and adjust their tactics accordingly.

However, these countermeasures would only slow down Gauss’s killing spree slightly.

Gauss blinked, reappearing directly above a small squad of Jackal-Wolf People. The Jackal-Wolf People captain at the front felt as though a flashbang had gone off before his eyes. He instinctively squinted and looked up.

"SLASH!"

Blood sprayed from his neck. The last image he saw was a familiar headless corpse, and then he lost consciousness.

A Level 5 Elite Jackal Wolfman.

Gauss instantly eradicated the squad captain without much thought, merely assessing its power level in a split second. He immediately turned his gaze to the other Jackal-Wolf People the captain had been leading. Their movements seemed to play in slow motion. They sluggishly raised their arms, placed their sharp-clawed palms on their bowstrings, and slowly curled their fingers...

Make no mistake; there was no need for him to activate his Future Sight Talent against these Elite Level low-tier Demons. That would undoubtedly be massive overkill. It was simply that their speed was far too slow, and his reaction time when concentrating was incredibly fast. When the disparity in power reached a certain threshold, you wouldn’t even know who took your life.

Gauss had deliberately targeted the middle section of the Jackal-Wolf People dire wolf cavalry. Like a sharp blade ruthlessly plunging into a giant python’s belly, his assault triggered a terrifying chain reaction throughout the entire unit.
