Global Lords: The Undead's Mobile Fortress
Chapter 349 - 179: One Wave After Another
Returning to the battlefield after so long thrilled the Ghosts, and the fact that the enemy couldn’t even harm them made it all the more enjoyable.
They floated in the air, weaving through the crowds. When one caught their eye, they would drift over and exhale on them for a little scare. If that wasn’t enough to distract the enemy, they would simply pass right through their bodies.
Being passed through by a Ghost was not a pleasant sensation. It was like having a block of ice shoved through your body. It didn’t just make them shiver; it felt as if their very blood was freezing, causing them to halt for a moment.
If there were only a few Ghosts, it would have been manageable. The problem was their sheer numbers. With millions of Ghosts—more than ten times the number of Alliance Soldiers—it meant a dozen Ghosts could be assigned to "look after" a single soldier. One can only imagine how miserable the Alliance Soldiers were.
Only because they were elite troops and the Skeleton Undead’s fighting ability was so low could they barely manage to hold on. Otherwise, under such constant harassment from the Ghosts, they would have collapsed long ago.
As a million Ghosts joined the battle, the scales of victory tipped in an instant. The Undead had once again gained the upper hand.
Palamede was going mad with rage. He had prepared 200,000 Alliance Soldiers as his reserves, but the enemy was just too shameless—they had prepared millions of Ghosts!
The scales of their forces weren’t even in the same league. ’How are we supposed to fight this?’ He watched as more and more of his Warriors died. ’If this keeps up, we’ll be wiped out.’
Seeing the unfavorable turn of the battle, thoughts of retreat finally entered Palamede’s mind.
’If I retreat now, I’ll still have a chance. As long as I can regroup, I can go toe-to-toe with the Undead during the day!’
’There’s no way the Ghosts can come out during the day. I refuse to believe it.’
Just as he was about to give the order to retreat, a sudden, deafening roar of battle cries erupted, making Palamede’s heart leap in alarm.
’My 200,000 reserves are already here. Who else could there be? Are they more Undead reinforcements?’
’If the Undead have even more reinforcements, then we won’t even have a chance to retreat!’
Palamede turned toward the sound and saw a group of bizarre figures. They seemed to be from every Race, their bodies wreathed in a black mist. On their exposed skin, black blood vessels bulged like writhing earthworms, as if they had been poisoned.
’Demonized Creatures?!’
’Holy shit, why are they showing up to cause trouble now of all times?!’
Before the Undead appeared, the Demonized Creatures had already been running rampant across the Wasteland, enemies to all the Tribes.
Palamede couldn’t understand why the Demonized Creatures would suddenly charge out at a time like this, and in such great numbers—at least tens of thousands of them.
Normally, a force of several thousand Demonized Creatures was considered formidable. Forget small Tribes; even medium and large-sized Tribes had to treat them with caution. But now, there were tens of thousands.
’Could these creatures be the Undead’s reinforcements?’
Just as Palamede grew tense, he noticed that the Demonized Creatures weren’t attacking the Alliance Soldiers. Instead, they were charging straight for the Undead.
Huh?!
’They... they’re attacking the Undead?!’
Palamede’s eyes widened as he stared in utter confusion at the Demonized Creatures launching an assault on the Undead.
The Demonized Creatures were in no way weaker than the Alliance Soldiers; in fact, they were even stronger. The corruption of the Demonic Qi had granted them immense Power.
These Demonized Creatures were, in fact, the Hunters who had emerged from the Underworld on White Hair Pulan’s command to trail the Undead army.
They had spotted the Undead long ago but hadn’t rushed to attack, because they discovered the Undead were already fighting another faction.
This was good news for them.
What they needed was to absorb the Power of Soul Fire. When the Undead fought another faction, there were bound to be casualties, which meant there would surely be loose Soul Fire dissipating on the battlefield. They could absorb Soul Fire without lifting a finger. So, why bother rushing in to fight and die?
And events unfolded just as they had predicted. After a full day of battle, countless Undead had been reduced to shattered bone, and the aura of their Soul Fire permeated the entire area. The pursuing Demonized Creatures were ecstatic.
The Soul Fire of millions of Undead had gathered. Although a vast amount still dissipated into the ether, the Demonized Creatures managed to absorb a significant portion, furthering their own Demonization.
The Soul Fire dissipated too quickly; by nightfall, it was almost completely gone. The Demonized Creatures, however, were still reveling in the pleasure of having absorbed it.
But they were greedy and unwilling to give up the chance to absorb more Soul Fire. So, when Li Ziyu led the Undead Fortress to attack the Alliance Camp, they once again lay in ambush, silently observing the battlefield and waiting for the chance to absorb more of the Soul Fire’s Power.
The Undead were far fiercer at night than during the day, and they caught the Alliance Army completely off guard from the start. This made the Demonized Creatures a little anxious. ’This won’t do,’ they thought. ’If the Alliance Army gets wiped out, who will be left to fight the Undead? How are we supposed to happily absorb the Power of Soul Fire then?’
They had been about to make a move then, but the Alliance Army’s reinforcements arrived. So they settled back down to wait, thinking to themselves, ’With so many reinforcements, the Undead are in for some real trouble now.’
But then there was another unexpected twist. Those green, ring-like halos floating above the fortress turned out to be millions of Ghosts, which suddenly plunged from the sky. The Alliance Army was once again pushed to the brink of collapse, clearly unable to hold them off.
’Dammit, these losers!’
The Demonized Creatures knew they couldn’t wait any longer. They had to act!
Though they were no allies of the Alliance Army, they shared a common goal: they all wanted to destroy the Undead. ’Might as well cooperate for a little while,’ they figured.
