Chapter 971: The Bridge Changes Down At Midpoint

  • Next Chapter

House Twelve met the bridge with a cupboard tied across its missing wall.

From Ty’s cradle, one half of the city sat beneath him while the other crossed overhead on a second roadback. People walked on both. Their boots held to different streets, and neither group appeared interested in falling into the other’s market.

The bridge between them had a floor only as far as its midpoint cage. Past that cage, the underside became the walking deck and continued toward the upper roadback.

Holl stopped the cradle at a blue rail. He checked the wrap around Ty’s handless left arm, then pushed two fingers under the shoulder strap.

"The bridge may change direction, but this shoulder carries no load."

"My bones have heard worse advice from people carrying cleaner hooks."

Holl tightened the strap anyway. Todd’s short piece of Nana’s cord rested across Ty’s ribs. Two links above the copper clasp, the white future call ring stayed cold near his jaw.

Darra and Pio waited beside the saved passenger deck. Parel’s carrier board remained with the applicants and their matched strips. House Twelve had given the trio a road, a damaged cradle, and every reason to leave before another platform used its residents as a yoke.

Nessa stood at the bridge gate with her caged arm pulled across her stomach. The copied pulse inside it kept turning toward the far city deck.

"Vask’s sample crossed here, and my arm wants the lower side of that city."

Jade held Nessa’s belt in one hand and Ty’s cradle line in the other. "We cross under their rules until somebody uses those rules against a person."

The bridge porter heard her. Iri Tolland had eight repaired loops on her belt and a cart loaded with stoppered medicine bottles. Each bottle sat in a padded hole with a lead weight clipped beneath it.

"The midpoint takes one cart per change. Your cradle follows my medicine because the night crew has waited through two roadback turns already."

Holl touched the two loose ribs tied beside Ty’s right hip. "His left arm cannot accept the second roadback before the wrap is reset."

Iri looked at Ty, then at the receiving clock above the upper gate. Its heavy hand had almost reached a brass peg.

"The night crew closes its medicine room when that hand reaches the peg."

She rolled the cart onto the bridge. Two workers followed with waist lines clipped to its rear bar. Iri moved fast enough to make the bottles knock inside their padding.

Jade pulled Ty’s cradle behind them. Nessa walked at its right side, fighting the cage whenever the copied pulse tried to hurry her elbow.

At the midpoint, Iri locked the cart inside a square rail and moved every lead weight from its lower hooks to the upper ones. The two workers changed their waist lines. One hung from the side rail while his boots searched for a floor that would arrive after the cage turned.

Ty’s skull crossed the painted midpoint.

Down moved through his teeth.

The far roadback pulled at his jaw chain while his cradle remained heavy against House Twelve. His right hand caught the blue rail. The left arm twisted inside its wrap, pointing back toward the floor his soul had already stopped using.

Holl’s shoulder strap held.

Iri watched the medicine weights settle against their new hooks. "Bring the cradle into the cage after my rear wheels clear it."

Nessa’s right arm punched through the gap beneath the cart.

Her cage struck a black plate hidden under the midpoint rail. The plate answered her copied pulse and slid one handspan toward the opposite street.

The change cage opened before Iri’s rear wheels cleared.

Every bottle in the cart rose toward the bridge roof. The workers went with them. One waist line caught. The other tore through a repaired loop and sent its owner toward the second roadback with the cart rolling above him.

Jade wrapped Nessa’s belt around the blue rail and shoved the waiting commuters back with her cold forearm.

"Keep both gates closed and give the fallen workers empty bridge space."

Iri caught the cart handle. Her body swung beneath it, pulled toward a floor forty feet above the one her hands still expected.

Ty opened his cradle latch with his right thumb.

Holl caught the back bar. "Your chain outruns what that shoulder can survive."

"Then keep the shoulder here while the rest of me gets across."

Ty slid from the cradle until the safety line stopped at his hips. The city’s other down took his skull and chest. His pelvis stayed with Holl. Between them, his spine bent across the midpoint rail.

The handless left arm pulled backward inside the wrap. A forearm bone pressed into his ribs while the elbow searched for House Twelve’s floor.

Ty ignored it and opened two chain links with his teeth. His present right hand closed around the blue rail. Four fingers held, though the missing fifth left the grip loose near his thumb.

He sent the chain around Iri’s waist.

The cart turned above her. Its rear corner struck the worker hanging from the good line and knocked his boot free. Jade caught that worker’s rope and fed it through the gate wheel.

"Pull when his belt reaches the wheel, because the cart comes after him."

The commuters obeyed in an uneven line. A baker with flour on both sleeves took the first pull. A woman carrying hinge teeth took the second, leaving flour and iron dust ground into the same rope.

Nessa knelt against the midpoint. Her caged arm had fitted itself around the plate’s edge, copying a groove that turned toward Vask’s vanished sample.

"This plate is carrying his pulse forward through the bridge."

"Can you cut the cart loose without changing down again?"

"I can make my cage follow his copied pulse harder than this plate follows my living arm, but somebody must catch the cart when both pulls break."

Nessa bit the control over her bad molar. The cage tightened until a needle entered the groove. Her arm jerked toward the far deck, dragging the black plate halfway from its socket.

The cart lost one direction and swung across Ty.

His right hand slipped to three fingers.

Ty drove one loose rib through the cart’s rear wheel. The bone caught between two spokes. He fed the second rib through Iri’s chain and used both as a crooked brake while Jade hauled the first worker into the gate wheel.

The handless arm moved the wrong way again. Its elbow tore through the shoulder wrap and struck the midpoint rail. Ty felt the impact near his neck while the arm itself kept insisting the blow had landed below his feet.

Pain reached his neck first, then arrived again inside the arm hanging behind him. The locations refused to match while the chain around Iri tightened.

"If this bridge finds a third down, somebody else pays the crossing fee."

Iri kicked against the cart frame. "Keep complaining while you pull me past the medicine rack."

She climbed the chain hand over hand and hooked one repaired belt loop around the blue rail. Ty shifted the wheel rib. The cart rolled toward the midpoint cage rather than the upper street.

Jade brought the second worker through the gate. Nessa ripped the plate clear and trapped it beneath her left knee. The change cage returned to its painted line with a hard turn.

Medicine bottles dropped into their padded holes. Two cracked. Iri checked the stoppers before checking the blood on her palms.

"The receiving shift can use every bottle that kept its seal."

Holl pulled Ty back into the cradle. His left elbow still pointed toward House Twelve after the shoulder settled against the second roadback. The arm had chosen a down his torso no longer shared.

Jade kept one hand beneath the elbow without forcing it. "We bind the arm where it believes the floor remains, then move the rest of you slowly."

"I would prefer my body to hold one opinion before the next fight."

"Your body has met you, so that seems unlikely."

Iri pushed the medicine cart onto the upper deck. Workers opened the bridge gates, but nobody cleared the way for Jade when she picked up the black plate.

Five punched squares surrounded its center. Beneath them, a dock number matched the route Nessa’s cage kept following.

Iri saw Jade read it. "Account Five rents the lower dock, and Vask’s stake arrived before our morning change."

A bell began striking from the council tower on their new street. People along both roads tied white cloth around their bridge belts and turned toward public stairs.

"That bell calls a protection vote before outsiders can seize a fixed ground provider."

Ty looked at the torn loop on Iri’s belt. "His plate nearly dropped your crew outside the change cage."

"Before Vask fixed this midpoint, we carried three bodies off this bridge every bad season, and the council kept paying families with apologies and empty burial hooks."

Iri set both cracked bottles in a return box and pushed the usable medicine toward the waiting night crew.

"You saved my crew today, and I am still voting to keep him."
