Chapter 959: Nessa Keeps Him Aboard For Her City

  • Next Chapter

The livestock stake rose through its floor ring before the goats began falling.

Nessa reached the animal deck with Todd’s staff across her shoulders. Six workers already hung from waist cords around the pens, pulling feed gates toward the pantry wall as the roadback changed down.

The stake’s third iron ring had split. Its pale shaft leaned through the crack toward Ty’s handless left arm one deck above.

A goat struck the ceiling net and tangled one horn. The herd keeper cut the animal’s neck loop, caught its rear legs, and passed it to two workers without looking away from the stake.

"Pens three through six take the east rail, and nobody uses the cracked ring."

The order came from a woman sitting astride the stake well with both boots under a brace. Her direction tags carried kitchen soot, nursery thread, and a strip of hide from the animal deck.

Dellin reached her from the other side and locked one of his brass tags over the crack.

"Vessa Orl, the kitchen divergence reached this ring before the roadback turned."

Vessa tightened the tag with a short wrench.

"Then the dead runner leaves before his next bone teaches my herd another floor."

Ty came through the hatch inside Holl’s throw cradle. Jade held his reset shoulder while Holl managed the brake. The arm shared the current pantry down, but the cracked stake followed whenever Ty lifted the elbow.

Nessa lowered the recovered field finger. It pointed through the animal deck toward lower service. The stake bent toward it by half the distance it bent toward Ty.

Vessa saw both movements.

"Your foreign finger carries the same contamination, and you brought it beside a loaded well."

"It carries the crew that cut your kitchen and the prisoner still breathing behind them."

"A useful danger still falls through the same overboard door."

Workers moved the last goat beneath the east net. Only after every pen latch took the new down did Vessa release one boot from the stake brace.

The migration council arrived as people with work still attached to them. A housing strap keeper carried three buckles around one wrist. The water line worker came with wet knees and a plug hammer. Solla brought her flour tin under one arm while Dey followed with the empty breakfast rack.

Forty one bowl grooves held charcoal marks, with a black cross over the broken place as Solla set the rack beside the cracked ring.

"West brace received every serving, and the missing bowl broke against Ty’s divergent arm."

She opened the flour tin. Broken clay, the cut knife catch, and Dellin’s bloodied five point tag lay together inside it.

"Dellin’s approved crew took this numbered catch and used it to pull a breathing prisoner across my window. Ty spent his chain on my child rather than the carrier."

Vessa touched the cut leather with her wrench.

"That earns witness weight and a kitchen repair. His arm remains unsafe beside my stake."

Holl kept his shortened fingers on the cradle brake.

"Containment held one bell because Ty added his chain to the pipe. The first bolt bowed before the reset, and I guarantee nothing after this ring takes his pull."

The water line worker tapped the cracked ring with his plug hammer. The sound traveled up the shaft and entered Ty’s shoulder. His arm lifted against the cradle strap.

Jade tightened both hands around the socket.

"Strike it again and the arm may take your hammer’s direction."

He lowered the tool.

"Then every loaded stake becomes a handle he can grab without choosing."

Nessa knew what the council saw. Three hundred rooms had depended on Rillhold’s public stakes when the prison replacement began stealing down. A skeleton who could divide across those loads was useful only until one pull arrived through a nursery.

West Four had made the same calculation around contamination. Nessa had enforced it on soldiers who believed friendship should count as clean equipment.

She unwrapped the recovered field finger from her wrist chain.

The plates carried scratches from Room Four, Meren dust, and the loose black band in Rillhold. West Four’s direct bearing was gone. The tool still proved a foreign prison had reached her city and turned living soldiers into route hardware.

Three punctures along the lowest plate matched the cage needles still buried under Nessa’s sleeve. The cut at the wrist joint held Vey’s rifle oil. Meren could compare metal, wound, and command stores in one room if she returned with all three.

Driven into a livestock stake, those marks would become repair wear. The roadback would gain a brace while West Four lost the cleanest piece tying its soldiers to Room Four.

Without it, Vey would have reports, damaged people, and Nessa’s word. Commanders trusted those until budgets or funerals demanded something harder.

"What repairs the third ring if Ty pulls it free?"

Vessa pointed her wrench toward a square keeper cup below the stake well.

"Prison plate can bridge one ring until the next crossing. Your finger fits the cup and carries enough learned down to hold the shaft."

"You want the evidence my city needs melted into your livestock stake."

"I want my animals and sleeping decks attached after your tracker follows a prisoner through them."

Nessa turned the field finger over. One joint closed when the cracked ring pulled. Todd’s staff under her shoulder creaked as the pulse cage copied the motion.

Ty reached his right hand through the cradle slats.

"Keep the finger. I can leave the roadback and follow from its skin."

"Your arm pulled a loaded stake from one deck away. The skin gives it more roadback to damage and fewer workers to stop you."

"Your city needs that proof after this roadback is gone."

"West Four becomes expendable if the prison crew reaches it before I do."

Nessa placed the recovered finger above the keeper cup without releasing it.

"Name every condition before I spend anything here."

Vessa put three council objects beside the cup: her hide tag, the water worker’s plug hammer, and the housing keeper’s smallest buckle.

She opened the keeper cup. Three square teeth waited inside, worn smooth on the side facing the stake. The water worker slid his plug hammer between ring and shaft while Nessa lowered only the field finger’s first joint.

The plate caught one tooth. Under the next pull from Ty’s shoulder, the cracked ring straightened enough for the goats in pen four to settle onto all four legs.

A cage needle turned beneath Nessa’s sleeve. She held the joint inside the cup until Vessa waved the hammer clear.

"The finger can carry this ring if the skeleton damages it again."

Nessa lifted the joint. The ring leaned back toward Ty, proving exactly what the council would buy from her.

"The finger remains locked here through one crossing trial. Ty stays in a cradle whenever a bell announces change. He repairs damage his bones pull, and nobody moves him beside a loaded nursery stake."

Dellin added his bloodied crew tag from Solla’s tin.

"My office carries access damage. The finger answers only for new load caused by Ty."

Solla placed the broken bowl beneath the buckle.

"Kitchen damage stays separate, and my catch remains evidence until Dellin names who signed it out."

Holl kept his hand on the brake.

"I choose the wall or pipe side of every cradle cut while he remains aboard."

Nessa looked at Todd. The copper Cross Link piece at his belt pulled toward lower service. Flour still filled the groove from the kitchen panel.

"Can your mark hold the carrier after I lose this bearing?"

"It holds the wall number and two answered knocks. It may choose its other prisoner when the routes cross."

The limit sounded honest because promises had already bought enough bad hardware.

Nessa seated the field finger in the keeper cup.

The cracked ring dropped against its brace. A cage needle under her right sleeve turned with the plated joint and stopped against muscle.

Vessa locked the cup. Dellin, Solla, Holl, and the two council workers each took one side of the closure and tested it under load.

The field finger remained visible through the square opening. Nessa could no longer reach its chain.

"One crossing trial begins when the next bell completes."

Above them, flour fell from the lower service panel.

Todd’s copper piece dragged across his belt and pointed past the mark they had preserved. Ty’s contained arm followed, pulling toward a wall number farther down the roadback.

The living carrier had moved while Nessa’s field finger stayed locked beneath the livestock stake.
