Chapter 957 - 957: Ty's Left Arm Chooses The Wall

  • Next Chapter

Ty's left arm stole three breakfast bowls before anyone agreed what to do with him.

The handless wrist crawled along the wall pipe. Its elbow caught the wooden bowl bar and pulled. Clay cups rolled toward the wall while the rest of the kitchen held to the ceiling beneath Ty's rib cage.

Solla hooked the bar with her burned fingers and drove one heel under a rail.

"Your arm just stole three bowls from west brace breakfast."

"It has poor judgment and no hand to return them with."

Dey caught the first cup in his apron. A cook trapped the second beneath a meal sack. The third reached the wall, struck Ty's elbow, and broke around the pipe.

Solla looked at the pieces before she looked at Ty.

"That makes forty one usable bowls and one explanation you can give the brace crew yourself."

The kitchen hatch opened along the new floor. Two deck workers came through carrying a narrow cradle made from rope and slatted iron. Its outside corners were padded with old aprons. A winch line ran from the cradle to a round door stamped with an open hand.

Provision Master Dellin followed them with six brass direction tags clipped to his belt. Black grease marked his thumb where he had tested the severed kitchen catch.

"The throw cradle takes divergent dead matter outside before the next bell changes load."

Jade sat across Ty's open left shoulder with one boot inside the ceiling rail. Her living hand held the socket. Her cold right hand rested against his sternum and closed two fingers late whenever the arm pulled.

"That arm remains part of Ty while you decide whether the rule fits."

Dellin checked the white future ring around Ty's jaw chain link, the missing right index bed, and the ribs held against the knife rack.

"Your skeleton carries six directions and one collection mark through a food deck. The rule fits the danger even if the person argues with the label."

Ty liked that answer less because Dellin had given it without enjoying himself.

The deck workers set the cradle against the wall. One clipped a red cord around the pipe above Ty's elbow. The other kept both hands on the winch brake and waited for Dellin's order.

The brake worker had two fingers shortened below the first joint. Holl Dask had been burned into the leather guard around his wrist, where a cradle line had once cut far enough to take the rest.

"A miner's leg kept old down after we severed it. The throw line followed and took my brother over the rail."

Holl tested the brake twice. His shortened fingers stayed outside the line path.

"I hold this winch for workers in the kitchen, not for a skeleton promising his arm behaves."

Ty moved his right hand away from the brake handle.

"Then judge the arm by what it pulls and keep my promises out of your machinery."

Solla pushed the broken bowl pieces into an empty flour tin.

"Your approved repair crew cut my knife catch, took it across the window, and nearly put six blades through my child."

Dellin removed one brass tag from his belt. A five point seal had been punched through its center. Blood filled one of the holes.

"Their seal matched the morning ledger, and their board carried a fixed ground license."

"My catch carried a kitchen number, so their license never paid for it."

"It paid for exterior bracing and one safe crossing. Your catch became neither because somebody accepted a cut strap as finished work."

Solla pointed toward the pantry clerk who had counted the bowls through the shift. The clerk lowered his eyes to the ledger hanging from his waist.

Dellin moved the brass tag into the flour tin with the broken clay.

"The access failure stays with my office. The divergent arm still leaves before it pulls a worker onto that wall."

Ty called the arm toward his shoulder. The elbow traveled another inch along the pipe. His open socket twisted under Jade's palm and dragged her knee against his ribs.

She pressed the joint flat.

"Pulling harder will tear the arm free and leave it carrying the same direction."

"I noticed when the wall began stealing breakfast on my behalf."

With Todd's staff across her shoulders, Nessa stepped over the knife rack and lowered the recovered field finger toward Ty's crawling wrist. Finger and arm pointed through the wall at the same downward angle.

Dellin held up one hand before she touched bone.

"Keep foreign anchor metal outside the cradle until I know which direction it adds."

"This finger lost its road home and learned your roadback. It tracks the same crew your office admitted."

Nessa turned her wrist. The plated finger returned to the wall. She took two steps toward the pantry, and it shifted along the pipe in the same direction as Ty's elbow.

Todd moved with her so the staff stayed beneath the damaged shoulder.

"Both pieces point toward the lower service deck behind this wall."

Dellin checked the wall number above the pipe.

"Lower service turns outside during the next migration change. Anybody following now may become part of the roadback skin."

"The breathing prisoner already crossed onto that skin while your crew seal kept doors open."

Nessa rested her left hand on the field finger chain.

"I need the prison road severed before it reaches West Four again. Ty's wrong arm is the only piece following the carrier without a captain's nail attached."

"My workers remain exposed while that shoulder keeps pulling."

"Then contain the arm and keep the person who can call it back."

The cradle workers exchanged a look over Ty's ribs. Neither moved the winch.

Ty watched the kitchen continue around them. Dey transferred the forty first bowl to a carrying rack and marked the broken one with a piece of charcoal. Solla added meal to the last cup so each brace worker would receive less rather than one worker receiving nothing.

Throwing the arm overboard would clear her wall. Fighting the cradle would empty the kitchen before the bowls reached anyone.

Ty loosened his jaw chain from the knife rack and passed the hook to Jade.

"Put the arm inside their cradle while my shoulder still knows who owns it."

Jade tightened her grip on the socket.

"I hold the joint, and Dellin's workers touch the arm below my hand."

Dellin gave the brake worker one direction tag.

"Containment lasts one bell cycle. The migration council decides whether the whole skeleton stays aboard after that."

Holl crouched beside the lowest wall bolt and pressed his leather guard against it. The arm pulled before he finished. Metal shifted beneath the bolt head and left gray dust around its washer.

"One bell cycle tears this fitting out unless the cradle carries a second brace."

Ty took the chain hook back from Jade and passed its unmarked end around the wall pipe. The single white future ring stayed near his jaw, clear of the cradle and Holl's hands.

"Use the black links as your second brace. The white link stays with my mouth and out of your wall."

Holl made Ty close the loop himself. He set the brake only after Ty's right hand released every link beside the winch.

"If your chain changes direction, I cut the cradle free before it takes another worker."

"Cut the pipe side first because my arm already wants the wall."

Solla locked the meal rack and handed it to the pantry clerk.

"Kitchen liability ends when those bowls reach west brace and the stolen catch enters Dellin's office tin."

"My office already carries both pieces of the failure."

"Then keep carrying them when the council asks why my child was under your licensed knives."

The cradle opened against the wall. Jade guided Ty's shoulder while the workers slid the handless wrist between the padded slats. They fed the arm inside while it remained on the surface it believed was down.

Ty felt each strap through bone. The first closed below the elbow. The second held the wrist end. A third looped the upper arm without crossing Jade's fingers around the socket.

Dellin locked the cradle to the pipe and left the winch slack.

The arm kept crawling inside it.

Wood scraped iron as the wrist end pressed toward the lower service panel. The cradle moved half an inch before the wall bolts caught.

Ty tapped the pipe through his elbow. One strike, then two.

Something answered beyond the panel.

Two knocks came through the wall at the height of a restrained hand. A third stopped halfway, followed by leather pulling tight against metal.

Nessa's field finger bent toward the answer.

Inside the cradle, Ty's handless arm pulled hard enough to bow the first wall bolt.
