Fated love: the unwanted bride
Chapter 2682: Unwavering Light in His Eyes
There’s no one else in the ward; Butler Santana wasn’t sure if he came alone.
It seemed like he did.
They hadn’t seen each other much over the past half year, and now looking closely, he appeared quite haggard. It’s uncertain whether work was too exhausting, but as the Janus Family is a top-tier household, he shouldn’t be neglecting himself.
He gave Butler Santana a steadfast glance and nodded: "It’s me."
"You’re... in Cakago?" Butler Santana asked curiously.
"I came over from Old York."
"Ah," Butler Santana was surprised, "Did you... come to see Little Clementine?"
"No, I happened to be in town for business today, needed to sign a contract, and stopped by the hospital on the way."
"Oh." There was a hint of disappointment in Butler Santana’s eyes, but she quickly added, "Please have a seat, thank you for finding such a good hospital and doctor for Little Clementine. The hospital is great, and the doctor is very responsible, thank you. I’ll make you a cup of tea."
Butler Santana got up to make him a cup of green tea.
Sylvan Cheney did not take it and still stood there, his voice flat and cold, like a layer of white frost: "Where is she?"
"Miss Yale?" Butler Santana pointed to the next room, "Resting. She’s exhausted, didn’t sleep well last night, and when Little Clementine had a fever this morning, she rushed to the hospital in a hurry and has been very worried. Little Clementine is her heart’s treasure..."
Sylvan Cheney didn’t say anything, letting his gaze fall on the quietly sleeping Little Clementine: "Feeling better?"
"Much better, the doctor said it’s best to stay hospitalized for observation, we might stay for two days."
"Mm."
Butler Santana realized she’d spoken too much, and since Sylvan Cheney didn’t express much, she stopped talking as well.
Sylvan Cheney walked to the side of the crib, lowering his head to look at Little Clementine in bed.
The little one’s cheeks had returned to normal, her little face still fair and tender, one hand exposed outside.
Sylvan Cheney tucked her little hand back under the blanket.
The little one made a small sucking motion, halfway between sleeping and waking.
Little Clementine’s eyelashes were long, casting a shallow shadow on her fair face, and she looked both well-behaved and adorable.
Sylvan Cheney stood there, gazing at Little Clementine in the crib for a long while.
"Little Clementine was very uncomfortable this morning, kept crying and fussing, cried till her voice was hoarse, and only improved after seeing the doctor," Butler Santana said in a soft voice. "Children are all afraid of injections, Little Clementine’s no exception, the doctor comforted her for a long time."
Sylvan Cheney’s gaze moved again to the side bag, his eyes holding a calm glow, lips pursed, his jawline tight.
Butler Santana explained to him: "They’re toys and snacks for children, Miss Yale bought them to comfort Little Clementine. Little Clementine is easy to comfort, she’s very good, very obedient, a little coaxing does the trick. I often tell Miss Yale that Little Clementine is so good, she’ll certainly be very close to you in the future."
The little one in bed didn’t move at all, sleeping soundly, as if unable to hear their voices.
Sylvan Cheney still wasn’t saying much, simply staring at the delicate little one.
Butler Santana felt somewhat awkward, unsure whether to speak or remain silent.
Sylvan Cheney seemed unresponsive to her.
She could only say: "Mr. Cheney, Little Clementine is fine, she’s asleep. If you’re busy, you should attend to your work, we’re here—Miss Yale and I—we’ll take good care of Little Clementine. You’re busy..."
Sylvan Cheney didn’t leave.
Butler Santana felt somewhat awkward, not knowing what else to say, and watched Sylvan Cheney for a good while.
